Does Pittsburgh want a new craft brewery? by TERRYbytein pittsburgh

[–]zxo 1 point2 points ago

I tend to go for the more off-the-wall beers, with various fruits, spices, flavorings, etc. included in the brewing process. Think Dogfish Head. And Pittsburgh doesn't seem to have any brewery yet that gets really adventurous (outside of small batch seasonals at the Church maybe)... though I've only lived here for 9 months, so I may be wrong about that. I imagine it's tricky (though not impossible) to get your brewery going with that as a focus, though. You'd definitely want to make sure that your initial offerings are not only interesting but really damn good. I'd pay more attention to a new brewery if they offered something beyond the typical IPA, pilsner, porter, pale ale spectrum.

Probably the Meetup group. We play at lower Frick park (Regent Square) Saturdays at 11. Join us!

I currently play with the Meetup group on Saturdays at 11 in lower Frick park. They are a great group to play with and range from super-talented players to total newbs. No need to register on meetup.com, just show up.

There's also a group that plays on Flagstaff hill Wednesdays at 5 (I think) and Sundays at 4. I've never played with them, but there's lots of crossover with the Saturday bunch.

I've also heard rumors of a Thursday night game on the Cathedral of Learning lawn. No idea if that's true, though.

An atheist asks about Jesus by Kamunamiin Catholicism

[–]zxo 1 point2 points ago

Well to be honest, if a bible passage isn't included in the cycle of readings the Catholic church uses, then I probably haven't read it. Case in point, the story about the tree. Us Catholics aren't known for in-depth bible study like protestants are, and we don't consider it the sole source of teaching as other do.

I'll also point out that Jesus never committing sin does not mean that he never had righteous anger. After all, he went all (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ to the merchants and moneychangers hawking wares in God's temple. I don't know how righteous it is to kill a tree, but on the other hand, it's not a sin either, as far as I can tell. Based on the following verses, it seems as if he meant his actions as a sign to his disciples about the power of having total faith in God. And it certainly fits with other symbolism found in the bible about God valuing that which bears good fruit and destroying that which does not.

Well, if we're not counting miracles, then I'd say what sets Jesus apart from others who would preach "love, forgiveness, and general goodness" is that he practiced what he preached. Perfectly. As in, he never committed any sin. I mean, I'm all about peace and love, but I can barely go a few hours without at least wishing paper cuts on someone. And then Jesus took his spotless record and offered it up in place of our own sinful lives. He offered his own life to pay the debts of ours.

I realize that this answer isn't very satisfactory to someone who doesn't believe in the supernatural, but when it comes down to it, the part of Jesus that wasn't God was simply man. His earthly philosophy was nothing more than the radical idea that humans should be nice to each other. I don't know if this is unique for his time or not (I highly doubt it), but even if it was, the cultural spread of Christianity would have ingrained these ideas into our culture anyway. Sort of like a movie or musician whose new ideas become part of the foundation of the entire modern understanding of film or music... then having Kids These Days unable to see what the big deal was because they live in a world where these once-novel ideas have become the norm.

EDIT to add that Jesus was very much seen as a rebel by the Jewish religious authorities of the day, as he ignored many of the old testament laws which governed their lives... notably that he associated with the "dirty" sinners (tax collectors, prostitutes, etc.) and dared to perform miracles on the Sabbath. So that might be where the idea of Jesus as revolutionary comes from.

Breaking: Notre Dame Sues Obama Over HHS Mandate by walkertalkingin Catholicism

If you don't provide health insurance for your employees, you have to pay fines to the tune of (if I remember correctly) $4000 a head.

Is this true? I wasn't aware that the Affordable Care Act and associated mandates required employer coverage. That seems like a much bigger deal than the individual mandate. I could very well be in oversight, though, as I don't follow politics all that closely. Tried to google some info, and found that there is definitely a penalty for offering insurance plans that do not cover contraceptive care, but I couldn't find anything related to simply not offering a health care plan. Any more info on that?

Ah, I see what you mean. Though it would seem that employer limits on basic healthcare (whether or not they are actually providing it) would be at odds with the goal of universal basic healthcare.

I personally don't feel that employers are obligated to provide health insurance. Maybe others feel differently. Certainly, they're not legally obligated. But it often makes sense for them to do so anyway, as they are able to negotiate lower rates than an individual buyer would. Thus they can offer their employees more value while incurring lower out-of-pocket costs. This has apparently been so successful and popular that it is now somewhat of a social norm that employers will pay for health insurance. If I was entertaining job offers, I'd take the availability of employer-provided insurance into account, meaning I'd expect a salary increase to compensate for not offering insurance benefits. But I wouldn't be appalled if a company didn't offer health insurance. Bringing this back to HHS, if the mandate is not changed, this will effectively either force Catholic institutions to offer a higher salary to their employees, or for the employees themselves to pay higher premiums for individual coverage. Neither is a good outcome.

To me, the main argument against a religious exemption to the mandate seems to be that an employer should not be able to limit an individual's right to access affordable basic healthcare (which the Church agrees with... correct me if I am wrong); the assumption being that birth control is a basic Universal Good Thing (which the church does not agree with). So for people who can't grasp that Catholics might genuinely believe that there are some issues with birth control, what other reason could there be for the Church's stance except that we hate women and want to control their reproductive choices?

Here's what verse 1 looks like.

Using double dots is probably the definition of awkward rhythm. Everyone else, choir and congregation alike, changes the sixteenths to eighths (which are not only easier, but sound better), but I have no particular regard for the hymn, so singing it precisely as written is my own little stylistic statement. I wouldn't do it if I was cantoring though.

Do you insist on performing the rhythms in Be Not Afraid verses exactly as written in order to highlight how ridiculous they are? Or is that just me?

What should I say in confession if I can't think of any serious sins I've committed? by bw-47in Catholicism

[–]zxo 1 point2 points ago

I like to imagine that frequent confession changes the nature of your examination of conscience from "where did I screw up" to "where could I have been more holy"? If you only confess say once a year, of course you're going to be focusing on the major sins from that period. Going more frequently allows a closer examination of the little things in your everyday life.

Of course, this is mostly just a theory for me, as I have yet to outgrow my fear of confession (despite 0 bad experiences and many good ones), and don't go often enough to see if this is really what happens :\

Things like abstaining from meat are simply customs, and probably nobody is going to care. Frying bacon in the kitchenette on Fridays is just rubbing it in, though :)

A number of your coworkers will probably also be non-Catholic, so you should be able to find someone to ask if there's any specific quirks at your institution or department.

How can I support my wife in teaching our future kids about the Catholic faith if I don't have faith?

I think you've already got the right attitude. It sounds like, for the most part, you agree with and live in accordance with the moral philosophy of the church (which, to be fair, most people simply recognize as "being a decent human being") -- and that you are OK with the idea of your kids being Catholic like your wife. Kids learn way more from how you act rather than what you tell them, so the best thing you can do is to raise your family with love in the example of Christ, whether or not you believe in him.

What can I say if my kids ask why I don't go to Mass?

I don't know how useful the advice of a cradle Catholic without kids is going to be to you, but my suggestion is to be brief but honest when your kids ask questions. If it's something factual that you can research together, do it. Otherwise, answer from your own heart. But just answer the specific questions they ask, don't go out of your way to undermine what they are learning from your wife and the church. Don't use their questions as a launching point into a tirade against religion or belief. (Though you don't seem like the sort of person who would do this.)

If they know I don't believe in God, is there any chance they still might?

Based on the family of a high school friend whose parents had a similar situation, there is a 2 in 3 chance of your kids continuing to be Catholic after high school :)

Hope this helps, and congratulations!

A little different take than most here, perhaps, but have you looked at RoboRally at all? It's pretty much a single-track game, and the entire mechanic is that you're controlling the path of your robot.
