Won't be said enough.

The worst is the actual IT team/guys behind those websites that will have to work extra during this long weekend for absolutely no reason.

Meaningless vandalism always hurts the wrong people.

New feature in Google Chrome? by ashique47in chrome

[–]zpliskin 1 point2 points ago

It's been more than 6 months I believe. It was part of V15-16. With V19, they added a notification icon. background apps are usually desktop notifications (gmail, etc).

They forgot the option "do not show notification icon" though.

Trying to make the switch to SSD and had a couple of questions by eegadin hardware

[–]zpliskin 2 points3 points ago

This is true. Although I run with a similar computer with pretty damn similar setup, and in 3+ years of using raid-0 with $70 hard drives, I haven't encountered a single problem.

Also with all the dropbox and google drive out there, you can easily backup critical files on the fly without the need to worry too much.

Like eegad, I will soon be switching to SSDs although only once the firmware is out for TRIM on RAid-0 arrays (my current choice is looking to be 2x120gb mushkin chronos, which are $110 here, i'd rather have 180gb ssd but none are available).

Why do companies do this? by xSFHx_beachbumin iphone

[–]zpliskin 6 points7 points ago

I believe the reason is because early on, Skype was only compatible on Wifi and Jailbroken phones were able to have it work over 3G, which was not authorized.

Now Skype works no matter what.

You still get the error, but it works no problem.

Twice as many iPhone users use Wifi connections as Android users. by Asmarterdjin iphone

[–]zpliskin 1 point2 points ago

Was about to say the same.

Remember that until fall 2011, the "fastest" iphone was still a 7.2mbps connection. Many Android / Blackberries were out far before that with at least 3 times the 3G speed capabilities.

With current networks getting faster and better, a Wifi connection is becoming less stable and even slower than a 3G+ / LTE (My carrier's average speed here in Canada is 16mbps; Unless I am home, why would I use Wifi?).

Also 3G/LTE connections are more secure... You don't know whats going on that restaurant wifi or that mall food court.

AMD Phenom II x6 is just a little slower than a intel i7 and costs 1/10 the price by jds123in hardware

[–]zpliskin 2 points3 points ago*

There are many other factors involved in a CPU performance, mainly the cache, technologies, turbos, accelerations, etc.

Right now, AMD as a company cannot even consider competing Intel. It's borderline monopoly these days.

edit: I actually thought AMD was doing better than this... 5 years of getting raped is sad.

You are correct, half the performance,

Slightly better performance/price value.

Android Vs iOS The Truth about Apple and Google's OS - YouTube by bytetheftin Android

[–]zpliskin 0 points1 point ago*

I think the size is limited by the screen and camera (read it somewhere).

doing nothing seems to be a pretty neat feature to have when you want the bloody phone to do exactly nothing... no?

Is there a 1 button "close all, do nothing" on ICS ? (or do you have to close all open apps one by one all the time?). A really nice feature of iOS is how the apps close but not quite, saving your last state but not using any ressources or very minimum power. Last time i checked, this wasn't possible on Android (its either the app runs or doesn't).

Also legitimate question : can the widget fetching / usage be monitored or managed. If that youtube widget fetches new videos every 5 minutes, it's not really a good widget... and if all widgets do that, it becomes insane, no?

[–]zpliskin 0 points1 point ago

Improving battery is a necessity, something the video doesn't point out when adding all those widgets...

  • Skype's camera is upside down. No Clue why, it's a popular problem on many devices. just googleing it you end on a skype thread regarding this.

  • netflix crashes (again not sure why still trying to figure it out, but i think its the canadian store or something)

  • RBC (biggest bank in Canada) just release few weeks ago their Android app, something like 1½ after their iOS one. All transit (bus, metro, train) apps aren't available yet and force you to use their crappy mobile website (releasing a working website would fix the problem obviously, this is just government bureaucracy at its finest, it still sucks).

  • Congrats on the US release of ICS for SGS2. Not the case here bro. Like I said, no matter who's fault it is, i still don't have it.

I don't think iOS is better than Android. I think everything surrounding Android it is so bad that it's not compensating enough to be a winner. It's not Android's fault if my bank didn't make an app for it and obviously it doesn't matter how good Android is regarding this issue.

I am sure ICS for SGS2 is AMAZING, but Because my carrier decided "nope you ain't getting it brah" I won't know. And i Can go on and on and on on all the things I end up being able to do just to tell my dad "sorry but its not available for you". Again, this is a matter of time, and 2013-2014 should seal the deal, hench why i am now looking for a good Android device.

tldr; i am not ranting on Android, i am ranting on everything surrounding it: bad/no apps from companies, greedy carriers, etc

Older ios devices lose some features, but major upgrades are still there. I'd rather have 75-90% of the update than 0%. Regarding your Mac pro, pretty sure Microsoft charges every 4 years for a new OS too... and it's not price tagged at $30 (note: never used a mac, not exactly sure how it works but my friend said the $30 upgrade wasn't worth it).

The fact that each company release about 10 phones a year (the number of SGS2 models is completely in-fuckin-sane), With various versions of each model, some getting updates, some not, It's obvious the regular consumer doesn't find his way out of this and goes for the simpler version / ends up hating Android because the phone isn't good, etc.

The fact that Android Overall ecosystem is humongously complex is a major problem (its comparable imo to Linux right now. Amazing possibilities, but almost nobody not into this doesn't give a single crap that Bash is better than powershell).

  • While I am at it, I can ask you this: I am about (±1 month) to buy a new phone. Which one do you recommend?

I know that the iPhone 4S or 5 will do the job, will be supported, and be reliable over time. But I can't say the same for android Phones. I would have bet the SGS2 would be the most updated phone ever due to its sales and flagship icon but It's not.

My alternatives (out of something like 50 phones available) is the Galaxy Nexus and the ASUS PadFone. Anyone else who doesn't know as much about mobile, wireless, technology would have IMO 90% chances of picking a shittier phone than what they could have got, while on the other side, it's 100% chance of picking a good phone, with good support and good reliability. My dad switched phone in October of last year, and asked me on the phone which one he should pick up because the seller was telling him he could have the Atrix for free. Do you understand how ripped off he would have been when the SGS2 was available at the same time? All i said was "SGS2 or nothing, if its nothing, iPhone 4S. End of story." He went for the SGS2. Should have went for the iPhone 4S as some apps don't work well (skype, netflix, etc) and some regional apps aren't/weren't even available on android (bank application, local news paper, local transit app, etc). I don't know why those apps aren't available yet, but they aren't, and if someone asks me which phone is better for them, for now I am forced to say the iPhone as i cannot guarantee satisfaction with Android.

That said, in 2013 things might completely change, but it's pure uncertainty right now.

tl;dr: If companies were releasing 1-2 phones a year, It would be much better. Also governments/agencies/companies must understand there are more than 1 Application store.

tldr2; the complexity of the whole Android system is so insane for regular consumers that iOS devices just seem so much more simple.

  • Updates. and by about a gazzillion miles.

This is a much bigger problem than not being able to change your default browser (especially when the said default one just works fine already) or viewing 2 weather widgets at the same time...

Believe it or not, my 3 years old phone is officially more up-to-date than your 6 months old one... I don't care who's fault it is. The fact that it's not suppose to be like that is the problem. It's not normal for any device to let left in the dust weeks after its release, some phones even come out already outdated. The fact that your SGS2, a flagship phone is 3+ months over-due on the update is a shame, and that's why I won't support it's makers. It is a dishonest practice and needs to be re-enforced ASAP.

Google needs to step it up and force 2-3 years mandatory support. Hell Even their own Nexus One is powerful enough to run ICS and they abandonned it less than 2 years after its release. Why should I support my own phone for 2 years (3 in Canada) when manufacturers don't ?

edited for typos, yadi-yada

Save me from the iPhone!! by a_mandiin AndroidQuestions

[–]zpliskin 1 point2 points ago*

If you want to stay with Android, i cannot recommend more the Galaxy Nexus (any unlocked device where you can install your own rom is good choice, but the nexus is the sexiest and the feeling is great).

Compared to the iPhone, the Nexus Prime (because that's a more badass name) is:

  • sexier, better screen (resolution, size, clarity imo)
  • faster browsing (more powerful, better browsers)
  • better google integration (gmail, talk, voice especially)
  • The ability to change rom is fantastic (and the updates are not delayed)
  • Better control over consumption of battery, data, etc
  • Quality build (iPhone is pretty weak build... one of the weakest i must say, a Galaxy S2 is insanely more durable).

That said,

apps are generally better on iOS due to the system being less fragmented, Although some developers are really starting to do way better jobs than crappy ports, to a point where the trend starts to switch side.

But remember that depending on the use, an iPhone could be the least problematic choice for some people (ex: our moms). My current phone is a 3GS and while i hate the limitation (thank god for jailbreaking), the fact that I have flat-zero problems with it after so many years of use makes me happy. Like everyone says : it does less, but what it does, it does it mad well (beside of safari).

[Edit] Forgot to mention that alternatives would be the Galaxy Note or Galaxy S2, although the camera on the GS2 is completely off (colors are washed out), if you don't mind the oversize of the Note or having to photoshop photos with the GS2, they are both good alternatives.

I also feel it's safe to counter argue myself with why you should consider iOS again :

  • Camera is FANTASTIC (I don't understand why 6 months after release, no phone is remotely close to beating it still)

  • jailbreaking allows some customization.

  • overall easier to use

  • no worries regarding updates

She should def. sell those, so she can pay her iPhone bill and Beats by Dre Headphones and keep protesting about tuition fees.

See what I did there?

I was with you guys (not against the hike itself, its needed, but its really not the time with all the excesses being made for no reason), but it's not by pissing me off that you'll gain my support.

I don't mind protests (the protest in front of my work at square victoria was cool), but by not reporting bad behaviors you make yourselves look like vandals as well, and I care about my car more than I care about you.

You guys have yet to provide an alternative or to propose a viable solution to the said problem. Stop whining and fix your own shit already.

Also if you block the fuckin bridge again, i tear you guys up like maggots.

Quel avenir pour le français à Montréal ? by PogoPoutinein montreal

Instead of trying to force non-users to use it, they should have made it interesting to learn and show how useful it is to be bilingual; It is an incredible asset to have and hope it won't ever be lost, but it's pretty obvious now that nobody cares about it, and nearly nobody of the new generations speak it correctly.

I used to fail French in school, and still am the one in the office doing less mistakes possible and making sure it's of proper quality.

I am at a point where i'd rather hear someone say "they play" instead of "ils jousent" or "i fell" instead of "j'ai tombé".
