How I Imagine Australia After I've Been Browsing Reddit For A Year Or So: by OreoDrinkerin WTF

[–]zoomzoom83 3 points4 points ago

I spent much of my life growing up in a fairly rural area, and myself and the neighborhood kids would regularly go 'bush bashing' - essentially cutting paths through dense bushland with sticks and machetes and building forts.

We did this for years, and while I'd regularly come home covered in ticks, I probably saw 2 snakes in a decade of doing this. (There were more spiders than I could count, but I've only been bitten once. I did nothing about it and suffered no ill effects).

It's not that there aren't fuckloads of snakes out there - it's just that they hear your footsteps and move on well before you get there.

What scares me even more is that Australia is starting to head down that path.

I don't think Milk is the culprit, although I did try cutting it out for a while (Went on an exclusion diet). I get a runny nose pretty much immediately (within minutes) of eating certain foods, but can drink vast amounts of milk without issue. I also believe whatever my food allergy is is aggravating some neurological issues I have (Tourettes syndrome, OCD, and crippling anxiety). These have significantly subsided now that I'm 'Gluten Avoidant' (i.e. mostly avoid gluten, although not anally strict about it).

Wheat is, most of the time, pretty much guaranteed to set my nose off, but I can eat (for example) higher quality breads generally without issue (Cheap bread will make me congested for hours), and I ate a danish the other day without problems.

The overwhelming factor is that things with wheat usually set me off (not always), and foods without wheat very rarely do (but sometimes can). Restaurant or Takeout food is almost guaranteed to set me off regardless of what it is, whereas home cooked food is much safer. (I think this is probably largely due to cross contamination).

I'm thinking it might be a preservative, or a specific wheat protein other than gluten that doesn't always make it to the final product. Alternatively it could be multiple things, which complicates the process considerably.

Then again, perhaps they did get such things working again, but by the time it happened civilization had already collapsed and nobody was able to mass produce it. I can easily imagine a militia supressing such technology to maintain power.

A petrol engine is absolutely reliant on electricity to run (Spark Plugs), but a Diesel engine isn't.

I'm not an expert, but I believe it's quite possible to push start a cold diesel engine without working glowplugs. It's much more difficult, but still possible.

Even more fascinating, Diesel engines can run off their own lubricant oil. Which means if there's a leak, you can get Diesel Runaway

Which can be quite difficult to stop

Hypothetically if 'electricity' no longer works (because the laws of physics changed?) then a petrol engine wouldn't work. But a Diesel engine should chug along just fine.

"In the United States, food allergy affects an estimated 5 percent of children under the age of 5 and an estimated 4 percent of people aged 5 and older."

http://www.niaid.nih.gov/topics/foodallergy/understanding/pages/quickfacts.aspx

That's roughly one out of every 25 adults. Gluten Intolerance likely makes up a very small percentage of these, but as above - the "Gluten Free" brands are usually Nut, Dairy, Fish, Egg, Soy, etc free as well, and have clean factories that guarantee no cross contamination.

I have a food allergy or intolerance that I've never completely been able to pin down, but wheat and/or gluten seem to be the most likely culprit - although other foods that should be gluten free do sometimes set me off.

Generally, brands that sell 'Gluten Free' products will remove many other allergens from the food as well (And do so in a 'clean' factory where no other products are made that might contain allergens), so whatever my allergy actually is, I'm excluding it by eating a GF brand, even if it wasn't actually Gluten.

I suspect there are quite a few other people in this situation.

Australia's Federal Budget predicts returns to Surplus, leading developed countries across the globe. by Jonathan-Oin worldnews

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point ago

This was more a result of the continuing EuroZone crisis, specifically the recent elections that elected leaders running on a policy of rejecting austerity measures.

Whenever things like this happen, speculators dump a lot of world currencies (AUD included) for the 'Save Haven' of the USD.

(The dollar had started to plunge before the budget was announced)
