Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by tokerjoker11in AskReddit

Don't know why you're getting downvoted for this, it's very true. Free university tuition, for example, is an exceptional opportunity, but saying that native kids from the reserves are just "too lazy" to take advantage of it is just about the most offensive thing I hear on a regular basis.

Another thousand-yard stare. This one has always frightened me.

AskScience AMA series: We are mathematicians, AUsA by existentialheroin askscience

I have a specific question for TheBB (no offense, existentialhero - his area of expertise is just more relevant to my question!)

I currently work for a physics lab studying ultracold Bose gases, so - do you ever work with quantum Boltzmann transport equations? If so, have you come across the phenomena of spin waves? That's been the bulk of my work so far in this lab but I am still pretty hazy when it comes to understanding the origin of these spin waves. Apparently all the mysteries lie within those transport equations.

That being said, can you tell me a bit more about your research with these transport equations?

I wish I knew which hadith it was off the top of my head. I will contact my professor and see if he has it, I would love to send it to you - I hate to be the person guilty of "I heard this." It may take a while but I will try to send it to you!

I don't think what I said is apologetic - I was just trying to give a specific example of the words of the prophet being misinterpreted. How it went from "having up to four wives is okay IF this...but mortals aren't capable of the "this", so no more than one wife" to "having up to four wives is okay" full stop.

Apologies if I've gotten it wrong, I was told this by my Muslim history professor.

I think you mean "Wahhabi Islamic culture" (Saudi Arabia) or "Twelver Shia Islamic culture" (Iran) subjugates women. Certain societies with Islamic religious traditions do subjugate women, but equating Islamic culture itself with subjugation of women is a dangerous way of looking at it.

I think Mohammed goes on to say that since no man is even capable of treating more than one wife equitably, having more than one wife is inherently wrong. Mohammed had multiple wives in order to spread the religion in its infancy, IIRC.

What's one comeback you've used in life that was so smooth you still grin when you think back on it? by bigsol81in AskReddit

My dad's marginally creepy friend had come over to our house for a visit and was making some borderline inappropriate comment to sixteen-year-old me. I wasn't having any of it that particular day, so I peered over at the smart car he had driven up in and asked "Are you compensating for something?"

university health professional advised me NOT to get STI testing, and that's really bothering me. by spacklejacksin sex

[–]zajirobo 4 points5 points ago

I had a university health professional give me the same sort of speech, implying that I was "selfishly using student subsidized health care" by getting my yearly pap smear when I have only been sexually active with women. Apparently there is a significant decrease in likelihood of getting HPV from only same sex partners, but, PLEASE JUST GIVE ME MY PAP SMEAR, thanks. I'm going to get it done anyway.

My parents went to Westview Centennial in the late sixties, it was apparently just a lovely neighborhood. Lots of immigrants but not the "nightmare" everyone else thinks it is now. It's similar to the Downtown East Side here in Vancouver - everyone not from there thinks it's "hell" but the community is like nothing I've ever seen.

What is something slightly evil that you take pleasure in? by hannahjoy33in AskReddit

I made a "never leave" park with only one ride. The only square you could enter the park on had an entry to a chairlift ride that went over water to the rest of the park. The entry/exit to the ride going back to the park entrace was inaccessible by land. This way, once you decided to go into the park, you could never leave!

The park's one ride was where it got really good. It was a standard steel roller coaster that just had a steady climb, up up up until you couldn't go any higher as dictated by the limits of the girders. Then I steadily built the land itself up to the maximum height and again raised the roller coaster to its maximum height. After the final climb, it started to go down...in the tightest possible corkscrew. Down...down...down...ALL the way to the lowest point underground that you could go. It took about a minute to corkscrew all the way down.

One person went on it. I think they died.

As a man, when is the last time you cried? by Travorisnobodyin AskReddit

[–]zajirobo 1 point2 points ago

My father hadn't cried since 1989 (disputed), possibly earlier. His father died then but they had little to no relationship as his father was European and felt that showing the children affection was the mother's job. He may have cried then but he thinks it's unlikely.

He may have cried when my brother and I were born but that's also unlikely. He just has different ways of showing love I suppose. The fact that my father hasn't cried in possibly more than 25 years is mind boggling, and sad in it's own way.

I hope Lynch turns out along the same lines as Jackson. Time will tell I suppose. As far as class goes, I haven't heard of Lynch doing anything completely classless...other than the whole "dick grab" into the end zone thing but I mean...COME ON.

I consider myself a classy girl but I would totally grab my dick if a) I had one and b) I had just scored a touchdown by running through the entire defense of the defending super bowl champions when no one thought my team should have even been in the playoffs in the first place.

EDIT: I just read the "personal life" section on Lynch's Wiki page...not going to compare him to Jackson at all in terms of class. I hope he turns out along the same lines as Jackson skill wise.
