No, I'm not pissed off about the hand I've been dealt; I'm not even trans, I'm just not a shitty person.

OP, thanks for demolishing the oversimplified caricature of pickup you invented in your head, based (it seems) on the experience of a couple of your friends.

Everyone, undergraduate tripe like this is what happens when people try to understand a large, diverse, complicated community in 5-10 minutes.

No offense, but I'm not "white knighting" – i.e. I don't care whether you specifically like me – I just think seddit and pickup in general will be more interesting if people beyond straight cismales feel comfortable being part of the discussion.

Pretty common among dudes, sadly, but definitely not universal.

It seems to me like attention whoring and manipulation.

WTF? This is exactly the kind of shit we try to do, and it's awesome when we do it; calling it "attention whoring and manipulation" just because it's a chick doing it is a double standard. And suggests that you feel intimidated by a girl with a little initiative and personality.

Okay, I'm just some ugly, disgusting old guy who used to be an ugly, disgusting young guy, so my viewpoint on "alpha females" and their "seduction techniques" probably doesn't mean a lot.

Don't be so hard on yourself! But I think you've answered your own question: this is a <HG5 perspective, basically. HG8s and 9s (or hell, ugly but good PUAs) aren't necessarily going to sleep with literally any pretty girl that says hello.

Sure thing. I think I've seen a number of trans people use the no-space version, but I totally see your logic, and agree it's probably the better way to write it in general contexts like this.

Proposal: we start asking posters to verify their email address so we can remind them to update. Sort of like /b/ "tits or GTFO," except "verified email or GTFO"

Yes. You get first dibs on the good seats on the trollbus, next the pregnant ladies and old people.

As for it being a big deal: it's not. I don't mind using whatever word they like. If I meet such a person and it comes up, I'll refer to them as trans. That doesn't change the fact I find the indignation over the word completely ill-thought and misplaced.

I don't agree with everything in your last comment, but I'll just say, this is good enough, thank you, and goodnight.

I always assumed it was short for transgender.

I know – it's pretty intuitive as an abbreviation, so I don't think it's terrible if someone mistakenly uses the word once or twice. My primary point with this post was to educate people who didn't know.

Can i ask why tranny is so offensive?

Because "tranny" is what trans people hear when people are fucking with them – mocking them, physically attacking them, etc. I just talked to my little sister, who is trans, and she mentioned how some rapper a friend shared with her has this song about Michael Jackson, where the rapper calls MJ a "fucking tranny", and how that was just so hurtful and offensive to her. If you need more examples if this kind of thing, let me know and I'll get more.

Yes, I completely understand. It's an intuitive abbreviation, and it's widely used, so I think people can completely be forgiven for thinking it's a normal word.

Can i ask why tranny is so offensive?

Of course: because that's what trans people tend to hear when people are fucking with them. (Mocking them, physically attacking them, etc.)

So, for you it's complicated. (As a fellow white male atheist, props BTW.)

I just talked to my little sister, who is trans, and she confirmed that it's not like the word "tranny" is inherently evil – trans people use it sometimes, sort of like how gays use "queer" and black people use "nigger" – but she also confirmed that it's what she hears when someone is trying to fuck with her. And that kind of thing – the experience of the people actually involved – is what this ultimately comes down to. If you want to say "tranny" and mean no prejudice/harm by it, well, OK. I (and trans folks) may think you're being a dick, but at least you're not intending to be insulting by it. But I just don't understand what's so difficult about this. Many people experience this as a slur, and unless a person has some particular beef with trans people, or some generalized desire to be obnoxious, I don't see why it should be such a big deal to refrain from using that word.

I maintain that there are a number of things to worry about, and verbiage is one of them.

Highly relevant question: Do you belong to any group that has a significantly negative slur attached to it? (Aka, are you not a straight white male?)

If you don't belong to any disadvantaged group, then you just don't have any relevant reference point, and you can't judge whether it's "silly" or not.

If you do, then let's discuss.

I accept that you may not see yourself as "hating" them, but it's a fair characterization of anyone who does hateful things, like calling them slurs.

If someone calls a Jewish person a "kike," it qualifies as "hateful" regardless of whether they are motivated by actual hate or just idle jackassery.

No, I'm making an argument based in real people's usage and experience of language. I'm not saying "Don't say tranny because I don't like it" – what I personally like doesn't matter. I'm saying "Don't say tranny because the majority of actual trans people see it as a slur."

Does anybody else get sick of all the people who cultivate their indignities - Constantly getting "offended." by Ma99iein MensRights

That's fair – some people whine just to whine – but speaking as the brother of a trans woman, let me assure you, trans people are not whining just to whine. There is pretty much no demographic with greater struggles than trans people, transwomen especially.

(And before someone says "What about African refugees??" I'll just say there are trans people everywhere around the world, just like there are gays all around the world.)

Edit: Upvoted for the apology. It's rare on the internet for people to admit a mistake – big respect.

Oh, I understand, I just don't care. I'm telling you not to fucking say the word "tranny". You don't like it. I am aware that you don't like it, and I don't give a shit. You don't like it, GTFO.
