This first thing I mentioned in bold text was that carrying cash isn't illegal. However, if you want to take steps to ensure problems like this won't arise, why not inform the IRS and bank about a planned purchase such as this? At least this would be the "proof" for the police that this isn't drug money, which I fully agree is sad thing to have to do. But it's reality as long as the "war on drugs" still rages on.

This is going to be burried by all the other comments, but I couldn't find anyone else mentioning this:

Carrying cash is NOT illegal, but carrying that much cash is NOT SMART either. I do not agree with what this cop did, but the man carrying the cash should have taken necessary steps to do so. The IRS needs to be informed when $10,000+ is being carried and used. I can't believe that it is hard to notify them or your bank so you can be cleared of any suspicion and protect yourself. As always, never trust the police. Never let them search your car. If you're carrying that much cash, get a form from your bank to prove that this cash is legitimately yours and that you have plans of making a large purchase. Yes, the "War on Drugs" is a bullshit excuse for cops to suspect large amouts of drug money, but it's the sad reality of our nation right now. This man did get his money back eventually because of spreading his story, but we can admit he wasn't the smartest person to deal with such a shitty situation.

My dad was raised by my fairly religious grandparents. He knows I'm an atheist and we usually butt heads in religious conversations, but he respects the fact I don't pray before dinner. Today as we were about to have Easter dinner with family and relatives, my dad asked his dad to pray for us. I was in the other room filling up the pitcher of ice water to distribute and my dad looks over, smiles in an understanding manner, and tells my grandpa to start. It's moments like that I don't mind one bit that my family prays. Deep down I know they are praying to each other rather than to someone upstairs who they've never seen. And if they are praying to a god before eating, it's the least thing that bothers me. Atheist will get nowhere by complaining about minor religious practices, IMHO.
