How can I convince my 13 year old to wash his hands? by eire1228in Parenting

[–]yolfer 0 points1 point ago

True. This is what we do for our older children and it is annoying but effective. You can get a pretty good guess about the quality of the handwashing just by listening. E.g. it should take at least 15 - 20 seconds, and you should be able to hear the soap being pumped/lathered and some hands rubbing back and forth in the water. My wife and I usually can judge from anywhere in the kitchen or dining room (they're like one big room in our house).

He shouldn't be allowed at the dining table unless he's washed his hands to your (or your husband's) satisfaction. He'll learn to wash them pretty quickly when his food is at stake.

Montreal to try new type of intersection for cyclists and motorists by Celauranin bicycling

[–]yolfer 0 points1 point ago

In Seattle, cyclists must ride "as near to the right side of the right through lane as is safe." So regardless of the presence/absence of a bike lane, if it's safer to ride in the car lane, one can do so.

Sorry, I didn't totally understand this comment. Will you please turn it into a musical composition?

Have you ever contacted the mods to ask them about this? Maybe we could get some change in their habits.

I don't have the discipline nor interest to keep investing in individual stocks. I have my Roth maxed and my 401k maxed to match and then some. I don't know where to put the rest of my 'stock money' that I haven't lost yet. by EnterTheManin personalfinance

You're not being paranoid, you're being a rational investor!

Unless you can stomach huge swings in your net worth, definitely don't put a large percentage of your money in a high-risk investment like REITs (Real Estate Investment Trust... shares of real estate that you can buy and sell like stocks), though owning a rental home as an investment might be an exception.

The STAR fund is rated medium risk, and you can see the Portfolio Composition in the link I provided. The plurality of STAR is invested in Vanguard's Windsor II Fund which is a successful value-investing fund (look up John Neff, who founded the fund). As a whole, the STAR fund is 60% in stocks and 40% in bonds.

If I had an extra $3k to put into a long-term investment, I'd put it in one of Vanguard's All In One funds. Probably either the Target Retirement fund (if you want to be extra conservative, you can pick the previous fund to your actual retirement...e.g. I plan to retire in 2040. I'd invest in the 2035 fund so my allocation will have more bonds), or the LifeStrategy funds where you can dial up/down your risk-tolerance and investment horizon.

Hope this helps! I've spent so many hours reading through Vanguard's funds, let me know if you have any questions.

I thought it was going to be about car airbags.

Vanguard's website lets you search their funds by minimum investment. The lowest minimum is $1k. If you have $1k to invest, I'd recommend their STAR fund. Then once you get to $3k invested, you can move your money to a fund with lower fees.

Seattle AMA request: One of the black clad rioters. by new2flyingsalmonin Seattle

Understood. I have a follow-up question...

Question: has an anarchist society as described in the links you've posted ever been tried on a large scale? If so, how did it turn out? What was the size of the community/society? Was it separate from a larger government or contained within it? If not, what do you think is preventing this from happening?

Can you help us understand the difference between "personal" and "private" property?

This is a fascinating discussion, btw.

You're getting upvotes so I assume this is a popular suggestion. I put it on our to-do list. Thank you for the feedback.

You're not the first person to mention trouble adding an item from Nordstrom. I'll go see what it is about their site that's giving people problems.

We're giving some thought on the best way to deal with dead links.

You're right that older users will have an unfair advantage. So far, there's no limit to which items can be used on a Mission. Since everyone is new we have some time to think it over and come up with something fair. Thank you for pointing this out, we'll figure something out (until then, you'll have an advantage since you're one of the original users :).

Good questions! They're worth $5, and we award them to the first 50 people who rack up 50 points playing around on the site. FFA is the first community we've let in to the game, so your odds of being in the first 50 are really good.

I'll update my post to let others know this.

Thanks for giving it a try! That error is probably on our end. What was the website you were trying to add an item from? What browser are you using? Let me know and I'll take a look.

We currently have that same problem as pinterest and polyvore, where you can click through to an item only to find that it's out of stock. We're working on a way to monitor this, and do something about it. Maybe remove the item? Or just grey out the "Purchase" button on our site?

Yeah, it's similar to polyvore, but more of a game. They were an inspiration.
