Google Voice is also really handy for this.

They'll still be involved, but they're just providing a modified Falcon 9 for the launch vehicle. All the really tricky stuff will be done by the Stratolaunch group.

Actually they're not doing it either, though several of the same people are involved. Burt Rutan is doing initial designs for the system, and Paul Allen is funding much of the project.

NASA goal: manned trip to Mars by 2033? by ttruth1in nasa

[–]yatpay 3 points4 points ago

The idea of learning to live on Mars by living on the Moon is absurd. They're completely different environments. Living on the Moon is like living in space, but with abrasive dust everywhere. Mars is an actual planet with an atmosphere and resources. Having a settlement on the Moon could be useful, but I there would be many similarities between a Moon settlement and Mars settlement other than a few superficial features.

Wow very cool! Haha, it makes my vehicles look like cave drawings!

One small point though.. SpaceX is not proposing the Stratolaunch system. They're just the company providing the orbital launch vehicle. SpaceX has actually been strangely quiet about their involvement in Stratolaunch, so I have to wonder how committed to it they are.

On Monday night, on a whim, I flew to Florida to see/photograph the SpaceX Falcon 9 COTS 2+ launch. Could you guys help me enhance the photo? by yatpayin postprocessing

Haha, well, it wasn't the most financially responsible thing to do, but they have these wonderful things called credit cards and.. well.. $230 for a round trip isn't so bad!

Well yeah. But lots of hypothetical questions that are fun to think about would never happen.

Hey that's my photo! :D

You guys had one hell of a launch! It was an incredible sight to see. What kind of work do you do? I'd love to hear what life is like at SpaceX!

EDIT: Haha, oh wait it's you! I already talked to you about this! I guess I'll leave my comment here as a monument to me being an idiot :P

I flew from Buffalo to Florida and back in one night to take this photo of SpaceX's COTS 2/3 flight. Worth every penny. by yatpayin pics

They're building something that's never been done before, so the budget was base don estimates, but the JWST has far FAR exceeded the expected time/budget required to make. I'm all for the JWST, but it was poorly managed, and it's making NASA look bad in the process.

Of course, the same thing happened with Hubble, and no one remembers it because of the incredible imagery. Hopefully the same thing happens with JWST.

Haha, I figured the price tag was worth it even if there was an abort just for the ridiculous story.

I did it to see it with my eyes. The karma is just a nice side bonus.

I was told you guys would appreciate this. My photo of the Falcon 9 launch this morning. 197 second exposure. Xpost from /r/pics [3204x2136] by yatpayin ExposurePorn

Just pure dumb luck. I had the aperture pretty high because I was worried about it being out of focus.

It's a combination of the COTS 2 and COTS 3 flight.

Great shot, but not mine! It looks like someone with a better setup captured a much nicer photo, haha
