What's the most offbeat piece of history you've found researching something else? by Daeresin AskHistorians

Maybe I'm missing it in the quote, but what exactly is the reply mentioned by Napoleon?

greatly amused, told this reply to Lagrange

I'm assuming something fairly persuasive?

lol, that's the hope! We're getting insurance before we ship too, just in case.

We're definitely hiring a professional shipper, if we do go overland. Don't wanna worry about damage, permits, or any of that.

The Canal does sound pretty fun, and we're bummed we might miss it this time.

Our mast is already down for storage, stowed aboard securely. Though it is low and requires ducking, we'll definitely take that into account next time.

Thanks for the tips, always good to hear the options from people who've done it!

The outboard is a good idea.

We're pretty jealous of ourselves, fairly sad that we're starting to reconsider. But if we do the trip ourselves, that would be about all the sailing we could do for the season since we live so far from wherever the boat ends up being docked and need vacation days from work.

Well we're motoring the bulk of the trip, so weather would be less of an issue.

She's 8000lbs displacement, according to our survey, keel stepped mast, 24', and 9'-3".

We don't know/trust anyone to do that for us, so we'd be hiring someone if we went overland.

We'd be hiring professionals to do the heavy lifting for us, just to simplify our lives a little big. So all permits would be their issue.

That's a great idea, I say we mail them all in within a certain week, or month, depending. How about April 15th-21st?

That is on the table, but we're not sure of the best way to go about finding such people. Trustworthy people, not to impugn all college students.

I Was a Warehouse Wage Slave -- My brief, backbreaking, rage-inducing, low-paying, dildo-packing time inside the online-shipping machine. by slaterhearstin TrueReddit

The things listed in that article do not seem like they apply to warehouse workers, like the ones talked about in the article. I'm sure some might get those perks, but I'd bet they've got temp workers just the same. Especially now that they're part of Amazon.

A nice Sunday brunch (more pics and recipe in comments) by xircsoin Cooking

[–]xircso[S] 0 points1 point ago

A brunch my wife and I made this weekend. We've been... well not dieting, but not eating the big breakfasts and dinners we had been so this was a nice treat.

Album here: FOOOOOOD!

Recipe as follows

Croque Madame:

  • Homemade white bread (just a 1lb loaf using our standard bread machine's recipe from the included booklet) If the bread looks small, that's cause it was. But it actually turned out awesome, the perfect size for the meal.

  • Homemade béchamel sauce, just following Julia Child's recipe from Mastering the Art. So delicious.

  • A nice, high quality ham. Ours is a new one from our butcher in town.

  • Gruyere. Lots of gruyere. We got the good stuff, just cause we don't do this much and we wanted to splurge.

  • Fried Egg. As usual, though we used goose fat (from our failed attempt at roasting one for New Year's Eve; but we got its fat from it so it's cool).

Preparation was basically just a ham and cheese, with béchamel on the insides of both slices of bread. We pressed it overnight in the fridge, once again Julia Child's tomes come in handy! Then just fry it up in the cast iron griddle as any regular grilled cheese, top with a bit more béchamel and more gruyere, broil for a few minutes to get it all nice and melty and voíla! Top with fried egg and you're good to go.

The Biscuits were Alton Brown's southern biscuit recipe, with about 1/4c of the AP flour swapped with 1/4c cake flour, from another Julia Child's recipe. I think the cake flour made them even lighter than previous versions with that recipe we've made.

The Marmalade for the biscuits was a homemade Tangelo fruit, which we didn't know existed until we grabbed oranges and found they weren't. Just your basic marmalade recipe that we had left over from testing as a cupcake filling. But that's another post. (spoiler: It worked)

And bacon, just oven fried a few slices we had left over from pulled pork recipe. And that's another post too.

We got the inspiration from the TV show 'The best thing I ever ate', which we're not really big fans of but happened to see the brunch version and, well, there you are.

Enjoy!

Where do you read that in the passages you quoted?

I don't see anything about death for causing a premature birth, which seems like what you're referring to. Just a fine, funnily based off what the husband wants.

Would You Vote For A Woman For President? These two female radio hosts wouldn't because women are "too emotional" by goldenpath223in femmit

[–]xircso 11 points12 points ago

What a load of crap. As for the military issue, what situation exactly do they envision where it's even a problem for men to protect a woman? Do they think male soldiers would knock women down at the first gunshot and physically protect their bodies? Or perhaps they'll, I dunno, engage in their jobs to save the woman's, and theirs, the other male soldiers, and any citizens who might be around, life? There are real concerns about putting women on the front, but beyond meeting the same physical standards for combat as men I think they're just wrong. The same goes for the Presidential question, as the Media Director says, some women wouldn't make good Presidents cause they couldn't handle the pressure, but the same can be said for men as well. I would have no problem supporting a female for President, if I thought she was qualified.

Good on the men and other women who challenged those stupid ideas, both in the studio and on the phone.

So about that PSN rebranding to SEN... by xircsoin PS3

Could be, though I have a hard time seeing them ditching the Playstation moniker. It's been around for awhile, and still has pretty good impression; not to mention the pervasiveness of it.

Oh, absolutely. It was nice the first time I saw this layout on the PSP, but I think the PS3 could do so much more. If nothing else, something to fix the problem with font disappearing on 90% of the backgrounds I've tried out. But maybe I should just pick darker tones for my backgrounds....

Good places in Lafayette for a date? by conoverin Purdue

[–]xircso 0 points1 point ago

Adelino's. If you go on the right days, they have live jazz playing which can be nice. Or if you go on the right days, they don't have live jazz playing, depending on your preference. As someone else mentioned, it's right next to Chumley's, inside a building with an awning so can be easy to overlook.

The tapas menu is delicious, full of variety and for a college student it is possible to get out pretty cheaply. Also kind of fun to share food on a date like that. And then you can hopefully avoid getting a huge plate that is hard to finish and either having to stuff yourself, take a doggy bag, or just have it thrown away (always hard for me).

I recommend the baked goat cheese, couscous, any of the brochettes or croquettes, fried eggplant or any of their veggie dishes. And their bread pudding dessert is divine I think. And try their sangria, if you're of age.

It is almost never crowded when I've been there, it can get busier later (since it closes whenever the last customer leaves) and can be noisy if there is a good crowd, but from 6-8 is almost always empty, in my experience. If you feel up for it, ask for Christopher as your waiter; a very friendly and knowledgeable guy about the food and can give you lots of history.

It's also fun for larger groups, but that's most likely not what you're looking for right now.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At 1:40 in the clip: "Isn't green jobs the biggest hoax since the moon landing?"

Is that really what Fox News puts out? That we didn't land on the moon? The whole video was scary in its naivete and bias, but that was the scariest to me.
