(possible spoilers all) Dunk and Egg references in the books? by mike774in asoiaf

I have a feeling it will be something of a running joke in the D&E stories. Maybe one of these days though.

I remember reading it and laughing because it's definitely a reference to how much of a hopeless jouster Dunk is and always will be. :)

Also, when Jaime is reading the white book entry on Barristan (in SoS IIRC), it mentions that he had unhorsed Dunk at some tourney somewhere.

This wildfire scene last night was so great, between Tyrion, Bronn, and that adorable pyromancer. by chillbrayin gameofthrones

True, but the way he completely changed Dany's voice from SoS to DwD is pretty terrible. The original voice for her was awesome.

It's totally worth it. I was skeptical at first but I'm so happy I decided to read them.

Yup, I am just very sympathetic to Cersei. She is what you get when you take a Sansa and crush her dreams over and over again. Anyway, without your having read the books, I'll just leave it at that.

I don't want to play the "she's a product of her enviroment" card (she is accountable for her actions), but she doesn't deserve to be hit. After a life of heart-breaking disappointments, her kids and brother are the only things of value for her. She is willing to do anything to protect them and she is successful. She may deserve to be executed, but not beaten.

Just my 2 cents.

If I study really hard to be a good piano player, would my children inherit some talent? How many generations are needed to pass down interests and talents? by mjollein askscience

It shouldn't make any difference whatsoever unless new information about this kind of cognitive epigrnetics emerges in the future.

[–]wynnstate 15 points16 points ago

Basically, no. What you are referring to is called Lamarckian evolution. It has essentially been proven to be bogus. The genes you have cannot be modified by your behavior generally (other than by consuming mutagens which would cause random and mostly deleterious changes).

That said, an emerging field of genetics called epigenetics concerns heritable traits that are not DNA based. A parent passes on epigenetic elements accrued over their lifetime to the offspring. However, I don't believe anything even close to what you are talking about has been documented.

(Spoiler ALL) What are some small but interesting things you think others may have missed? by geckoguyin asoiaf

[–]wynnstate 25 points26 points ago

Assuming that R+L=J (which I do), I really like how much of a mentor Maester Aemon is to John. He doesn't know it, but his great-great-uncle is a huge influence on his whole mental philosophy. That just makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside because both characters think that they have no real family members present in their lives.

(Spoiler ADWD) Evidence on a certain theory. by oposssomin asoiaf

Agreed. Also, look back to the Mel POV chapter where she sees in her fire a man changing into a wolf then back to a man. I think that forshadows John's becoming Ghost and his eventual return to a human body.

I'd love to print this out on a poster. What do you think would be the ideal dimensions?

who do you think is most honest/noble character, apart from ned stark?(spoilers) by davidl085in asoiaf

[–]wynnstate 0 points1 point ago

I'm guessing if you are still reading DwD, you haven't had a second read through of GoT. The second time you read it, pay attention to Ned's dreams, his POV inner monologues, and the way Ned and Jon interact. After that, you will at least have to admit that a compelling case can be made for Jon not being his son.

How are American Chinese treated socially in China? by kunomchuin China

[–]wynnstate 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, educated people will have a strong understanding of what these terms mean. Even in big cities, though, you have to interact with more provincial folks like cab drivers, street vendors, etc. who may know the definition of these words but not actually understand that they can refer to a Chinese descendant who is so culturally distant from China, that he doesn't even speak the language.

I speak from experience on this one. I've had ABC friends who were berated for not being fluent in Chinese.

[–]wynnstate 0 points1 point ago

Well at least you should have enough Chinese at this point to explain to people that you are American, not Chinese (despite how you may appear to them). You can learn a canned response to confusion. Here's something off the top of my head though I'm sure you can improve on it:

不好意思!我的普通话说得不太好。我是土生土长的美国人。虽然我是华人,不过上大学之后才开始学汉语。

Honestly, after you make that clear to them, they will probably just be interested in talking to you and learning about your experience. I have found that even though sometimes I have been offended by what I perceive as ignorance over there, if I approach the individual with kindness and attempt to educate them, they respond very well.

I don't want to scare you. You may not even notice the things I mention. Just try to be prepared in case someone thinks it is crazy that you are of Chinese descent and are not fluent in Mandarin.

[–]wynnstate 5 points6 points ago

Learn Mandarin as well as you can. It seems like many Chinese people (though not all) do not really understand the idea of an ethnically Chinese person fully becoming a member of a different nationality. My ABC friends have been treated poorly at times because people there assume that they are dumb for not knowing Chinese despite having lived in America their whole lives.

Remember, China is very much a monoculture (the minority ethnicities play a small part in most peoples' experience) and many Chinese people assume the same of other countries. They are not experientially prepared to understand that you have become completely American.

Regardless, you will find amazingly friendly people and often you can just explain your situation to those who are confused. Have a good time over there!

(SPOILERS ALL BOOKS) A Question About Rickon by stony_rainin asoiaf

[–]wynnstate 12 points13 points ago

Bumblingbagel8 quoted a passage which says that Rickon went to a place with cannibalism. The best description of Skagos is in the following passage from AFfC:

The island sat at the mouth of the Bay of Seals, massive and mountainous, a stark and forbidding land peopled by savages. They lived in caves and grim mountain fastnesses, Sam had read, and rode great shaggy unicorns to war. Skagos meant “stone” in the Old Tongue. The Skagosi named themselves the stoneborn, but their fellow northmen called them Skaggs and liked them little. Only a hundred years ago Skagos had risen in rebellion. Their revolt had taken years to quell and claimed the life of the Lord of Winterfell and hundreds of his sworn swords. Some songs said the Skaggs were cannibals; supposedly their warriors ate the hearts and livers of the men they slew. In ancient days, the Skagosi had sailed to the nearby isle of Skane, seized its women, slaughtered its men, and ate them on a pebbled beach in a feast that lasted for a fortnight. Skane remained unpeopled to this day.

These two things together, I think, are strongly suggestive that they went to Skagos.

[All Books - SPOILER] Robert Strong and Smell by juanfranelain asoiaf

Yep. After the description of him, I had assumed trimethylaminuria. Trimethylamine does indeed reek.

Also, Dany's son's description made me think of Harlequin ichthyosis (NOTE: don't look up pictures unless NSFL doesn't affect you).

China's Most Dangerous Hiking Destinations . China is home to several dangerous hiking locations. Many of the locations are within mountains that are virtually unknown, making them attractive, undiscovered country to hikers. by shiraholiin travel

[–]wynnstate 0 points1 point ago

High-Road 100%. With the low road, the part that you are actually in the gorge proper, you run adjacent to a busy tour bus road and it will ruin your experience. With the high-road, you get to look down on the fly speck sized busses. You are right about mid-height in the gorge and the trail is very quiet. Here is a pic of me in the center part. You can't actually snap a photo that includes the ridge and river of the gorge in one frame (w/o a wide-angle lens). In fact, you can't even look at both parts in the same peripheral vision at times. It is amazing!
