What TV show do you think has had the biggest drop in quality between seasons 1 and 2? by trialrun1in television

[–]wtfisthisnoise 0 points1 point ago

Each season has a central mystery (the first season's was murder) that gets solved by the season finale.

As far as reviews go, how reliable is cnet.com? by MortifiedPuppyin audiophile

HeadFi is great because you could look up almost any headphone and find a nice aggregate of different people's experiences. Though almost everything there needs to be read with some form skepticism, you can get a good general impression of sound signature and quality, build quality and comfort.

anythingbutipod and ilounge are also good forums, but I only visit those when I have a specific problem to read up on.

Has the world ever been war free? by 2e4Lin history

[–]wtfisthisnoise 7 points8 points ago

I asked this question over in /r/askhistorians (mine was if there was a single day where there was no warfare recorded; it's a bit of a shame people are kind of dismissive about these hypotheticals.

As far as sources go, in my search I found this interactive timeline: http://www.conflicthistory.com/#/period/ that tells you where wars were fought and for how long. I searched it for a couple hours and haven't found any gaps.

The top speed does make it good for street travel, where 50's usually the limit, but the range is what makes it terrible. With no option to use cross-town highways, you'll need to make the most out of the reported 43 miles on a charge. In sprawling urban environments, like LA, it would be inefficient to have stop and charge on the equivalent of 1 1/2 gallons of gas.

Just started watching HBO's Girls. If this is supposed to be modern day New York, why is everyone in the cast white? by bouillabaisseplayerin television

[–]wtfisthisnoise 1 point2 points ago*

I didn't mean to make the contrast btw the two countries without reference to how race relations actually are- I used British TV as an example of how backwards we are in being comfortable with race.

I can see what you're saying about the equity of the casting call, and I think if you talk to many nonwhite actors, a lot of their shepherding through to the stereotypical roles happens implicitly in the pipeline (from who gets an agent, what kinds of calls and requirements the agent gets and how that agent sorts out opportunities, before the casting department is even considered).

What I mean to say is that if you walk into an audition, the people who are there are going to look similar- it might not be explicitly stated as white but, 'looking for an Emma Stone-type,' so actors of different backgrounds in a major production are not likely to be auditioning for the same part by the time they actually get looked at. Sorry for the tangent.

[–]wtfisthisnoise 5 points6 points ago*

Yeah, I don't see Shoshanna (the slightly sexually-repressed rich girl whose parents are paying for her luxury life) being anything else but white.

That's sort of the point. The way race has been dealt with w/r/ t this show has followed the generally weird discourse we have about race should be represented. I'm not white and it's really off-putting when the conversation steers towards 'diversity' that characters have to be written in a specific mold in order for them to be recognizable as that ethnic background. It's rare for an actor to be nonwhite and play a character where that particular feature doesn't wedge itself into the plot.

Moss from The IT Crowd (and actually a lot of black actors in British TV) are who I think about where the actor's race/ethnicity isn't treated like a huge hang-up. Being a nonwhite person and not having that always factor into your characterization is a near-impossibility on American TV.

The discussion about race in Girls gets really sidetracked because diversity always seems to mean that black issues or hispanic issues have to be a necessary part of the show or that the characters have to be written with a recognizable and stereotypical vernacular (like Hannah's coworker in the last episode). Could one of the main members of the cast have been nonwhite and the dialogue not miss one of its beats? The characteristics of the college-educated upper-middle class do cross ethnic boundaries. Non-whites can be as obliviously privileged as the rest of the cast and that subject is actually a big branch different subfields of ethnic studies.

They could cast nonwhite actors in roles that would traditionally go to a white actor, but it's not likely that they will. That's the diversity issue that often gets overlooked. And I say that it's an issue (though not Girls's sole responsibility to 'fix') because it makes it hard for non-white people to get cast into leads when they're not thought of as being able to fill the role without bringing 'baggage.'

As a comedy, I can see how the characters can be insufferable, but so are a lot of the characters in Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson films, but I think this show has received tougher criticism because gender's factored in more heavily.

Does NBC have any idea what it's doing? "Oh, Modern Family is popular, let's do that, and let's have a tricky monkey working at a vet's office! That's funny?". Ugh. by p_U_c_Kin television

If it hasn't been more than 30 days since they were ordered and the seller won't offer a refund, OP can file a dispute w/Amazon. OP should take close-ups of the iem as proof when dealing with the seller and if they need to file a claim.

I think race, rather than Israel/Palestine, fits better as the third point on that triangle. Opinions on I/P aren't trafficked in everybody's day-to-day experiences where they can foment on an internet forum. But everyone has an opinion to share about race relations.

I have a late 2008 unibody macbook and I am going to upgrade. Are Intel Graphics really that bad? by wtfisthisnoisein applehelp

[–]wtfisthisnoise[S] 0 points1 point ago

I usually go for previous generations to save a couple hundred and it tends to work out well for three years before I resell and upgrade. I didn't think I'd get another macbook after all the changes they've made-- I hate the non-removable battery, too, as I usually carry a spare. I'll hold out on a decision till Ivy Bridge, though.

Thank you for your input. I've been undecided between the 2011 13" or 15" MBP, but the more I read, the more it seems like the 15" is the better option just for the ADM choice. I've never had discrete graphics before. I'm holding out on the initial reviews of Ivy Bridge before I decide on refurb or not. I'd be appreciative if you can reply if you ever do get the chance to compare!

The college i go to just declined my financial aid. It's a week before finals and i owe to school +3K. Due tomorrow. by nemlin self

[–]wtfisthisnoise 10 points11 points ago

I understand that you might not want to provide details, but I've worked in financial aid before and it seems very unlikely that a school would let you attend classes for almost an entire term without fees being paid and the FA office suddenly cutting you off. What's the situation exactly? Are you going to just owe money or are you not going to receive credit for the courses?

My (simple) guess is that you were on some kind of a payment plan and the last of your package fell through, in which case any decent school would still let you finish the courses, but all of your records would be placed on administrative hold (no transcripts issued, can't register next quarter). If that's the case, you should definitely clear it up first, but worry about finishing the courses as a top priority.

The antediluvian period was one of great wickedness and we must atone through high prices.

I just picked up one of these today after watching it hover around 130-150 for the past month. I just said fuck it and didn't want to wait for it to come down under 100 like the older model. It's actually $5 more expensive now than when I got it this morning.

The general feeling I used to get from the comments was this: we can concede redditors say some messed up things, but we don't get outraged. By remaining spectators, we can let the linked thread sort itself out, because what would we really achieve by trying to argue with people who've already made up their minds? Chances are your viewpoint is already there on the thread and it's much less exhausting not having to give a damn.

It's common courtesy, like a subreddiquette, to not comment in the linked threads unless you were commenting before it got linked, which is supposed to stem any potential downvote brigades. It's been discussed in other threads here, but the side-taking and drama didn't always continue into the comments, but there's been a huge influx of newer users over the past week, likely due to those stupid, stupid bots.

edit: most of that applies to the gender/race/class drama that gets linked, which I'm kind of tired of seeing. I've been downvoting a lot of those and the Paul submission, because the submitters have clear stakes in the drama and are trying to stir shit up. The best drama that's the most fun are the spats unrelated to the three big issues, like communities turning on their mods or people arguing over who's the bigger douchebag.

What are the best yet underrated movies that you have seen ? by Pettirossoin movies

[–]wtfisthisnoise 2 points3 points ago*

Critically, these are pretty well-regarded, but by underrated, I think most people mean "not talked about much." This is pretty much a mid-to-late 90s grab.

In the Company of Men

Two men (Aaron Eckhart and Matt Malloy), tired of having their masculinity challenged, decide to ruin the life of a deaf woman.

Box of Moonlight

Uptight John Turturro learns to relax over the course of a couple days with Sam Rockwell as his guide. This is a perfect movie for a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Freeway

Little red riding hood redone in Southern California with Reese Witherspoon and Keifer Sutherland. Great soundtrack by Danny Elfman.

Gridlock'd

Two men (Tupac and Tim Roth) fight red tape and outrun drug dealers as they try to secure spots in rehab to kick their heroin addiction. Lots of energy and darkly funny.

Welcome to the Dollhouse

The very depressing life of 7th-grader Dawn Wiener (Heather Matarazzo).

This really is such a great find and gets the meaning of 'underrated' and 'forgotten.' It makes me miss mom and pop video stores. Lots of stuff I haven't seen and some great bargain-bin films that I have. Pin from the first list is a recent one I checked out and really dug.

I just did a ctrl+f across the lists, but one that's not on here but fits with the overall pattern is The Last Supper (1995).

Yeah I bought an older 4G because I thought it would be a fun experiment. Got a 64GB CF card cheap, too and the ribbon or logic board ended up crapping out after four months.

I'd like to get one of the sandisk players, but honestly, after trying rockbox, playlist management was a mess and the ipod firmware was just easier to maintain. I'm split on what's actually the best way to go.
