IMO, You need an online portfolio of work done and you need to have done time at a proper company and verified business contacts... I've been successfully freelancing fulltime for over 14 years now but that was after spending 8+ years working at multiple fulltime jobs and teaching in nyc. (that is where all of the contacts come from)
