Where can I find a site/book that I can use to progress my reading/speaking, without romaji? by bibbleskitin LearnJapanese

[–]woofiegrrl 0 points1 point ago

TextFugu gives you romaji for the first lesson or two, while you're learning hiragana. Then it's hiragana all the way after that. I love TextFugu!

Thanks for this, I was dreadfully confused by what the Great Depression had to do with daylight! Turns out there's more than one "Black Tuesday" out there.

Never received item, will I get a refund? by thirdrevelationin Ebay

[–]woofiegrrl 0 points1 point ago

If you purchased it off eBay in February, the chances of getting a refund at this point are basically zero. The time limit to file a dispute (in this case, Item Not Received) is 45 days. Beyond that point, it is entirely at the seller's discretion whether to refund you or not.

If you paid with a credit card, it's possible you could do a chargeback. If you paid with PayPal directly, they will not be able to help you this far past auction end.

In my opinion, this guy was never planning to send the ticket, and was bargaining on the 45 days passing because "the box office didn't have the tickets yet." Of course, if he has excellent feedback as a seller then I might be wrong, but that's my gut instinct anytime somebody is promised something after the 45-day deadline. (It's also why buying custom-fitted clothing on eBay can be a bad idea - the process of getting measured and then making the clothes may push you much too close to 45 days.)

Have any my fellow American brethren considered moving to another state before moving to another country? by Elranzerin IWantOut

I'm confused. Are you actually suggesting this is what's going to happen, or are you saying that's what these kids think it going to happen?

I have always assumed that a collapse of the United States would just lead to anarchy, but then I also don't think it's going downhill, let alone going to "collapse" in my lifetime. There are things I may not like, but it's still doing quite well overall.

Thanks, I do know about them! I'm actually more interested in checking out what the stores themselves are like, but perhaps someone else can use the info. :)

According to the uploader's comments on the video, this is primarily Norwegian Sign Language with English mouthing, with some International Sign mixed in.

Trivia tidbit: International Sign is not technically a language, so it's not called ISL, just IS. :)

You wouldn't recognize anything actually, it's mostly Norwegian Sign Language. I'm fluent in ASL and I think I only understood anything because he was mouthing English. (He says this in the comments.)

[–]woofiegrrl[S] 0 points1 point ago

Whoa, really?! I was expecting both nobody speaking English, and not being in the computer, so I didn't even think of trying to go in on my own membership. Makuhari should have me in the computer too then, eh? I know what I'm doing on Saturday! Thank you!

Edit: As for phoning first - nah. I enjoy exploring places even if I can't go where I intended, so I'll just check out the neighborhood even if they don't let me in. Plus I am hard of hearing and hate trying to use the phone. I'll just head out there. :)

Fortunately bank-friendly hanko can be made at Tokyu Hands and similar stores for under 1000 yen. My bank didn't bat an eye when I whipped my pink plastic hanko out of its kittycat case.

As I mentioned in my blog entry, that's exactly what Nekobukuro was like when I was there recently, too. :(

Perhaps the management has changed recently - it was not so bad when I went in summer 2010, but when I went in March it was just awful. I genuinely felt bad for the cats. It broke my heart and I had to leave - I've never had that happen at any other cat cafe.

How do i deal with rude kids (my students) in Japanese or English? by skier69in japanlife

I have no eikaiwa experience, and I haven't ever worked with Japanese children, so unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. But I wanted to say I totally get why these insults are catching you off guard, and why you're worried about the parents' response. I have no answers, only empathy...hang in there.

[–]woofiegrrl 1 point2 points ago

There are white hostesses all over the place. Chelsea Haywood's book 90 Day Geisha will open up that world more than you ever wanted to know; Jake Adelstein's Tokyo Vice touches on it as well. Of course you have the famous murders of Lucie Blackman and Carita Ridgeway (both were killed by Joji Obara) to turn to for info too, if you like it gory.

IAmA Host player in Kabukicho, Tokyo, Japan. It is equivalent to an in-house escort without sex, but with alcohol and entertainment. AMAA. by DracoExpolirein IAmA

[–]woofiegrrl 5 points6 points ago

Hi Draco ;)

If this is the case, get this: sometimes, women want attractive, funny, smart men to be their companions just to be entertained.

If you can find yourself someone like that, then by all means go for it! But you know, most likely (if not 100%) the people who don't work in this industry won't have decorum on par with us. Some may not be your type, may not be funny or entertaining to your utmost liking. That's why host clubs are "different dimension" from reality.

I'm going to jump in here, as I have attended Draco's host club, with him as my designated host (I think? it was a little confusing). Honestly, I can totally get the appeal of it. I don't quite get it for the hostess clubs (where men are clients), but I totally get it for the host clubs.

When women go out to have a good time, they may feel they have to be on their guard. There are a lot of sleazebags out there, and when alcohol is involved, even the nice guys can turn into sleazebags. So finding someone who is purely good conversation and makes you feel good and enjoy yourself is kind of hard, especially because you know some of them are just trying to get into your pants. In most first-world nations that I can think of, men are the pursuers and women are the ones who are supposed to "protect" themselves from getting hurt.

So if a woman just wants to have a good time, and she doesn't want to deal with jerks, what can she do? In Japan, she can go to a host club. When I went, I was a bit nervous because I don't speak much Japanese, and I am not a social kind of gal - I stay home most nights. But I went to check it out, expecting that I would mostly just be watching others interact with the hosts. To my surprise, I had fun chatting with them (Draco helped interpret sometimes) and I actually felt special and appreciated without feeling like I should have my hand on my purse and my legs crossed. It was an opportunity to relax and enjoy myself socially in a safe environment.

I think that's why host clubs are appealing. I can't see myself ever having enough money to make a habit of going to them, but for women who have that kind of money, it's a great way to just go have fun and feel special without feeling the pressure for sex that you will probably get if you're "finding someone to do that for free."
