Diablo 3's Real Money Auction House Delayed Again | Rock, Paper, Shotgun by pakoitoin Games

[–]wishanem 0 points1 point ago

I've played some dungeon crawlers (Diablo, Diablo II, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, the LotR gamecube games, Dungeon Siege, and Torchlight) and I never replayed any of them after I beat them once. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but "how it is played" depends on the individual player.

How did you beat this in 8 hours?

I'm sorry I was unclear - I haven't played Diablo III! I was just commenting on the length of games in general. It sounds like it's a pretty long game from what I've heard. This website says 16 hours on average! Maybe I'll play it someday when it's cheap like I did with Diablo II. If it gets onto the PS3 (or I get a computer into my living room) I'm sure buy it.

I think playing a game through with every difficulty and every class is an unusual way of measuring its length.

The typical measurement in my experience is how long it takes to beat the campaign for the first time on easy or normal difficulty (without deliberately trying to hunt collectibles).

I'd consider anything which I beat in under 8 hours a short game. Average seems to be about 12 hours these days and shortness is easily balanced out by quality (like Journey).

Of course multiplayer elements extend a game's life indefinitely for some people, and replayability is important (but varies dramatically according to individual preference).

If you really want to be smart about it wait until at least 3 weeks after launch to jump into GW2. It's a big game so there are bound to be some launch issues.

If the day of/after release you see frontpage stories about the incredibly smooth launch, then give it a shot. Otherwise, wait as long as you can if you want the best experience.

(spoilers all) Combat prowess in the far, far north by visual77in asoiaf

Indeed. The ground of the fight (which was a river and not ground at all) favored Robert. Rhaegar was likely lighter on his feet (being smaller of stature), but couldn't jump around much on the uncertain footing of a riverbed. Being taller would also be an advantage for Robert, as less of his body proportionally would be slowed by the weight/resistance of the water.

If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

[–]wishanem 3 points4 points ago

Actually, genetic diversity isn't evenly geographically distributed. Most of humanity seems to be descended from a small group that migrated out of Africa ~80,000 years ago. As a result, African people vary from one another genetically way more than anyone else in the world. "Africans are more diverse than the rest of humanity put together, because they are drawn from the pool of humans who did not leave."1

[–]wishanem 6 points7 points ago

TL;DR Most of humanity is made of the relatively inbred descendants of the smallish group that migrated out of Africa 80,000 years ago.

I read an article last week which I can't find right now, but the relevant factoid was that small villages in Africa contain more genetic variety than every non-African put together. Here's an article that talks about the topic a little.

The idea is that humanity originated in Africa and stayed there for most of its existence so far. While culture, technology, and society developed at an accelerating rate over the last few thousand years, most of the genetic drift which took place in all of human history came while everyone still lived in Africa. As a result, Africa is exponentially richer in genetic diversity than anyplace else.

There's an awesome looking new zombie game set in Downtown! (The Last of Us) by jamith87in pittsburgh

[–]wishanem 0 points1 point ago

The debut trailer shows the not-zombies off a bit, if that's what you're looking for.

"If the game was about the monsters, we would have not showed them," said creative director Neil Druckmann. "The story's not about them, so [we thought] let's get it out of the way." 1

They seem to be basically zombies, though they're specifically not stereotypical zombies. More importantly, the game's PR says that it doesn't focus on the monsters.

I don't understand your comment at all. I didn't provide a counter-example at all, just another instance of callous disregard for a person on a bike by people in cars. I didn't make any claims about your experience, or ask you to change your memories. Deny yourself? That's the strangest thing I've read in months.

I'm sorry that I offended you. I promise that was not at all my intention.

I was just trying to juxtapose my recent bike accident with yours to demonstrate that bikers are also ignored and poorly treated where I live.

I'm sure I don't understand the de-humanizing mindset any better than you do. However, I do believe that the unpleasant portions of human nature aren't specific to China or even more common there.

While biking one day I was going down a steep hill and a car pulled out in front of me from a side street. I had no time to swerve around the car so I hit the brakes hard and went over my handlebars. The car drove off. While I was laying in the road (with what turned out to be a broken shoulder) 3 other cars drove by, swerving around me and continuing on their way. Eventually I picked myself up and took a bus to work.

And that's typical, here in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

Today my girlfriend told me that she would never have kids with a guy with tattoos because she doesn't want her kids born with the tattoos of the father, as if they were passed genetically. Brandon Sanderson will be self-publishing two new novellas this summer. Does the man ever take a break!? by IMO94in Fantasy

[–]wishanem 4 points5 points ago

He probably does write more quickly than GRRM, but their recent published works are deceptive on this issue.

Sanderson started writing novels in 1999 and wrote Elantris, The Way of Kings, and about 8 other books before any of his novels were ever published.

When Elantris was finally published Brandon revised and combined books to make the Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, and The Way of Kings.

His prolific track record is certainly amazing, but Brandon's publication history has as much to do with a massive trove of unpublished material built up over a decade as it does with a breakneck writing pace.

Decent entry-level selvage jeans? by goodtimes50in frugalmalefashion

[–]wishanem 3 points4 points ago

I also didn't know, so I just looked it up.

To summarize: Selvage is a bastardized version of the word "self-edge", meaning that the edges of the fabric are woven rather than cut. This is desireable because it eliminates the fraying of loose threads at the edges of the fabric. "This advantage is only realized on one edge of the fabric, however, as the fabric has to be cut to shape and anywhere it is cut the self-edge is lost."

So they're slightly more durable jeans using a different method of weaving the fabic.

Episode Discussion - 2.08 "The Prince of Winterfell" [TV Spoilers] by kjhatchin gameofthrones

[–]wishanem 1 point2 points ago

They certainly can talk to people. There are quite a few references to wildlings interacting with smugglers who travel north of the wall to trade with them, and the wildlings who go south can go into and out of Northern towns posing as non-wildlings. The North is big, so the exact origin of traveling strangers would be hard to distinguish.

There are a number of cases where wildlings sucessfully pose as non-wildlings in the books, but I don't want to go into specifics.

[–]wishanem 2 points3 points ago

Wildlings actually cross the wall in small raiding parties pretty regularly.

While a large group would have trouble, small bands go into and out of the North regularly. Remember the Wildlings who were captured near Winterfell in Season 1 (including Osha)? Nobody was really surprised to see them.

Indeed. There are conversations in the books about how Loras is a masterful rider and thus a great jouster but not the most skilled swordsman around.

The Hound has a deep-seated aversion to fire so great that he abandoned his position and fled King's Landing after being faced with wildfire.

Beric using a flaming sword was the most unfair trick I can imagine, and definitely made it an uneven match in Beric's favor. The fact that Beric was zombified might have decreased his strength, but the Hound impressed me by being capable of fighting at all.

Do you think they'll change the story so that Jon kills Ygritte? It was important to him that the arrow which killed her wasn't one of his (which he could tell from the color of the fletchings), but it might have more of an impact on the audience if he does the deed.

Smiling makes faces less distinctive, so smiling is a good way to make yourself less recognizable in a photo. That's why smiling is banned by some countries for passport photos; facial recognition software has a really hard time identifying smiling people.

Tell your friends that you don't smile because you want them to be able to recognize you when they look at the pictures.

That's the kind of reference that will probably be more noticable in the TV series. Bolton's voice might be familiar enough to make him recognizable, but I'm hoping that we see him wearing a distinctive Bolton-pink cloak before and during the scene to make it more obvious.
