Look what you dumb cyclists did to my car... by Perpetuumin bicycling

[–]whitedawg 5 points6 points ago

Huh? I was making a joke along the lines of the old murder-by-icicle mystery.

Oh, I know - I didn't mean to sound hostile to you or anything. But that's the comeback I would deliver to a driver who bitched about being magneted.

The danger with that attitude is that when you're the one moving, as a bike, you aren't moving that fast and you are very aware of what is around you. If you ride within 3 feet of a slow-moving or parked car, you know at all times exactly how close you are to a collision and can control that distance.

Drivers, on the other hand, have a very limited ability to see and hear what's around them. If they drive within three feet of a cyclist, they are most likely being reckless, because it's very hard for the driver of a car to tell whether the passenger side of his car is 1 feet or 4 feet from something outside the car (if the driver even realizes the cyclist is there at all).

Of course, this is all besides the obvious point that the cyclist has far more to lose in the event of a collision.

Unfortunately, that also makes you the bad guy in the eyes of the law. If the driver calls the cops and the cops see a magnet when they show up, they'll laugh at the driver. If the cops see a broken window instead, they're going to ruin your afternoon.

You know what else could potentially scratch a car? Driving within an arm's length of a cyclist. If someone values the appearance of their car, they shouldn't drive like a reckless asshole.

where can I find a great bowl of ramen or pho in chicago? by jazzslinkyin chicagofood

They have good stuff, but they're pricier and not as authentic as the Argyle-area places.

My go-to hangover food is also from Sun Wah - half a barbecued duck, diced up by the guy with the enormous knife. One of those and a bottle of Gatorade will set you straight.

This looks like such a great game! by Microsofttin WTF

If the people around the circle would have the ability to seriously hurt me, hell no. I'm not about to get a concussion or a broken nose for $100. And if you got unlucky, your medical bills alone could be way more than $100.

So there are two possible outcomes: either you lose money, or get the shit kicked out of you. Why does anyone play this again?

How common is your birthday? by mistermajik2000in offbeat

Lucky you! Yeah, I think most parents wouldn't care about that. But the few that do would be enough to skew the numbers in the absence of other reasoning, particularly if this infographic represents pretty small variations.

Well, even though it might be more proper to only use the sidewalk when you need to, I would probably stay on the sidewalk until it became a problem, then use the road until it became a problem, and so forth. Common sense is generally accepted in these situations, although it sounds like the route sort of sucks.

Also: where is this? In Chicago, our curbs are rounded (and often aren't 6" high), so riding up and down isn't a big problem. But I used to live in New Hampshire, and there the curbs are blocks of granite with square edges that aren't exactly bike-friendly.

As an Illinois resident, that reminds me of the Mad Men exchange between Michael Ginsburg and Don Draper:

"I feel bad for you."

"I don't think about you at all."

Chicago is fantastic. But you couldn't pay me enough to live in 90% of the suburbs that surround Chicago (Evanston and Oak Park being the only possible exceptions).

Not remotely close to true. If you're willing to do 1 or 2 interchanges, public transit goes everywhere, and Chicago is a great city for biking.

If the sidewalk is generally deserted, you should use it when you need to get by a car. When you're on the sidewalk, you should always leave plenty of room around any pedestrians and go not much faster than walking speed.

Ooh, good one! Any other ways you can help me through your virtual insta-diagnosis?

(In case you haven't figured it out, I'm not interested in interacting with you on the merits of these issues because it's very clear exactly where you stand and how much you value the facts.)

Your other posts demonstrate your lack of appetite for knowledge, so I'm not surprised. Have a good day.

It might make more sense if you read the last paragraph of my post.

America is a land built on the laws of free White men. To allow the White population to be overrun by Hispanics, Blacks, and Muslims, will remove the Western principles of honor, liberty and justice, especially if Muslims achieve their goal.

You're not very good at logic, are you?
