Prop. 8: Gay-marriage ban unconstitutional, court rules by TheGhostOfNoLibsin politics

[–]whitedawg 0 points1 point ago

The GOP hasn't been a conservative party since long before Reagan. Anyone who thinks Reagan was a conservative should look at the increases in government spending and deficits once he took office.

If you care about History, you should no longer care what happens on the History channel.

I'm starting a project (not school-related) and need a good kick from some history buffs. What are some major scandals in US history? by menace64in history

[–]whitedawg 2 points3 points ago

Milhouse: Sorry, Bart, I'm deeply immersed in the Teapot Dome scandal.

Bart: Huh?

Milhouse: However, it might be feasible in a fortnight.

Bart: Wha?

Milhouse: I can play in two weeks.

Bart: Juh?

Half a duck and a bottle of Gatorade is the best hangover cure I've ever used.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Where can I acquire Girl Scout cookies without knowing any Girl Scouts? by enimin chicago

[–]whitedawg 3 points4 points ago

If you work at an office, put up a flyer in the break room saying you want to buy girl scout cookies. This not only stands a decent chance of getting you offers for cookies, but will get you brownie points for helping out someone's daughter.

PLEASE don't ban pit bulls in Chicago! It's all about the owner, not the breed! by Blob_Sagetin chicago

It's all about the owner, not the terrifying mass of man-eating savagery!

Visiting Norway next August for 2-3 weeks - what do I absolutely need to see? by whitedawgin Norway

Trekking in the fjordlands is definitely in - we're probably going to spend half our time there in the Bergen area. Unfortunately, the potential length of the trip has been cut down to 10-14 days, so we're probably not going to stop over in Sweden.

Gingrich is fat, but he's not morbidly obese. Plus, he'd probably keep a shiv strapped to his ankle or something, whereas Mitt would be uncomfortable with playing dirty.

Lamar Smith, the scumbag behind SOPA, is up for re-election this year. Let's make sure his opponent wins! by tehboredin politics

If you go back to that era, people weren't talking about civil rights because it was literally dangerous to do so. The situation actually had to improve to the point where people felt safe enough to protest for civil rights. I don't think the views of the Dixiecrats changed.

I agree that freedom of speech is the first civil right, but being an "old southern Democrat" connotes more than that.

what you marry or do as long as it don't stop me from doing what I want is fine by me

That's great that you are tolerant. But if another person is restricting the rights of a third person, do you feel any societal obligation to push for tolerance or equality? Not being prejudiced yourself is good, but not standing for the prejudice of others is far better.

I'm working my way through a couple guidebooks right now - Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. I'll probably ask again when the trip is more imminent.

Thanks!

If you're commenting on my username, it's a college sports team nickname. I've thought about changing it because it's easily misunderstood.

What does that have to do with barbecue sauce? by BadKitty420in WTF

[–]whitedawg 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I absolutely think it's a rationale slapped on after the fact to justify a fear of gay people as "the other" and a threat to manhood. It's particularly obvious when you consider how many other old testament rules have been discarded without a second thought.

Go ahead and believe that. I don't care what someone believes as long as they make a kickass barbecue sauce.

I'd feel the exact same way about a lawnmower company that said "We believe the Dallas Cowboys are the only true football team."

See, I would think that statement is adorable, particularly considering the past 15 years or so. Actually, that's a pretty good analogy you made.

And yet old testament rules are still used by some to support the notion that the gays are evil.

Romney gives me the vibe of a guy at a party who desperately wants to be your friend and will try to say anything just to keep the conversation going. "Hey, do you like football? You don't? Oh, me either." It can be pretty painful to watch, especially when he tries to appear blue-collar. Americans hate obvious fakes. They were fine with Connecticut-born, Ivy-educated George W. Bush playing cowboy, but he had just enough connections to Texas to make it plausible. I don't think Mitt can pull off the same thing.

When Mitt's awkwardness is applied to a situation where he's trying to get you to vote for him, I think it can appear pretty cynical. Mitt's opponents now have so many personal flaws themselves that they're not really able to exploit his naked power-lust, but I think Obama will be able to make that apparent to the general public.

Florida Presidential Debate Thread 1/26/12 by Gothikaleain politics

[–]whitedawg 4 points5 points ago

I'd say Paul and Obama would have the best answers to that question, even though not everyone would agree with them. With Mitt and Newt, it's a transparent lust for power, and Santorum just wants to make the US into a theocracy.

Florida Presidential Debate Thread 1/26/12 by Gothikaleain politics

[–]whitedawg 1 point2 points ago

Romney is polished, but he has no substance behind his remarks. Luckily for him, the rest of the GOP field is too loony, and GOP orthodoxy won't permit his primary competitors from calling him on his weaknesses because in their eyes wealth is always good and taxes are always bad. Obama is skilled enough to cut through Romney's polish and exploit his underlying weaknesses. Unless the economy tanks again before November (because we all know the president controls the economy) then Mitt is fucked.

Newt should just say "listen, if you guys don't like this one, I'll pick a different one."

[–]whitedawg 5 points6 points ago

I'd go with Newt. He's smaller and older, but he seems irrationally feisty and Mitt is a huge pussy.
