How about Winchester. It is close, historic, and small enough to be enjoyed on foot. It used to be the capital like London is today and has a cathedral with a very long nave.

There's a really nice slider bar technique for these comparisons. I have no idea how its done but the effect is that the old turns to new as the bar slides across the picture.
