If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

[–]well_i_guess 0 points1 point ago

The people that are left never had to worry to begin with though. I guess the benefit would mostly depend on whether or not population was allowed to return to prior levels following the "culling." If that's the case then greater numbers with less risk is good, if population control is the goal, however, cutting out fatal diseases seems counterproductive.

And I'm not sure Tay-Sachs is a good example if it is truly fatal before reproductive age, because now we're basically talking about cleansing non-affected carriers as well. Here's a thought experiment: instead of killing all the carriers, would it be the same to just abort all the positive babies as the appeared? That would have the same effect, no?

I'd offer that it's no more than any other burden on society, drunk drivers, tax evaders, polluters etc. I could also argue that it would be putting countless medical professionals and specialists out of work, which may mean a net loss as far as broader society is concerned. Just like killing all the criminals would put many enforcement, legal and correctional professionals out on the street. This stuff is just about impossible to qualify /shrug

I don't bite when anxious. Many compulsive nail-biters are actually "perfecting" their nails (OCD-like), if I can feel or see any jagged surface of the nail, a lose piece of skin or a small scab forms, it has to go!

Cost-benefit analysis: if h2 > p + e

Where h is happiness, p is pride and e is ego, stop asking others and ask yourself. Despite the immortal words of P. Diddy, it is not actually "all about the benjamins"

What more could Ike have said? He was already putting his neck out, had he gone further he'd been labeled a quack and/or assassinated.

Keep it quid pro quo. There are a number of responsibilities in a household, divvy them up and go from there. You both need to establish this early because resentment will build up if one of you "always has to do it," whatever the chore is. Also, dishes may just be something his family delegated to the females, not being sexist but he may have been brought up a certain way, much in the way you might expect him to take out the trash and kill spiders =)

Could reddit help me find a song about friendship? by Pucin AskReddit

[–]well_i_guess 0 points1 point ago

I used to wonder what friendship could be. Until you shared its magic with me. When I was young I was too busy to make any friends. Such silliness did not seem worth the effort it expends. But [her name], you opened up my eyes And now the truth is crystal clear, as splendid summer skies. And it's such a wonderful surprise. Our friendship's magic and it's growing all the time. A new adventure waits for us each day is yours and mine. We'll make it special every time! Do you know you're my very best friend?

What exactly is the "benefit" here? Cauterizing every bloodline with these traits is ridiculous. People with Huntington's etc. do not negatively impact society in any real sense. Only people with Huntington's and their families are really affected, why don't you ask them if they'd rather the person was never born to begin with. Society gains nothing from this, and considering the role of genetics in evolution, you may just fuck humanity over in the long run. If you had killed all the Africans with sickle-cell anemia a thousand years ago, malaria would have decimated the continent.

The problem with the ends justifying the means is that you can never be sure of the broader implications of those means.

"Overpopulation" is a myth constructed by those in power in order to increase their control of resources. Eugenics, even in the abstract, is a deluded attempt to justify an increase in the quality of life of those that would remain, often forgetting the fact that their power derives from those very same political, economically or socially "poor." There's more than enough resources for everyone to live happy, healthy, productive lives; but maybe not enough for everyone to have a Hummer and an iPhone.

That said, cutting Earth's population in half won't solve a damn thing, the OP should give reason more than "you were put in charge." Without a reason we can't really maximize any benefit it might have.

My ex is from Seattle and made me listen to them nonstop and would brag about knowing and hanging out with him. Flash forward 8 years to a week ago when he pops up on comedy central and no one believes I (a) had a girlfriend or (b) knew this guy beforehand. But, off to make some "legal" downloads and maybe have some flashbacks.

I can identify an episode of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia before the scene even opens, i.e. just the time/day/city and sound cues.

Also, I graduate magna cum laude (3.76) from college in about 15 hours. I was in the Marines for ten years. Met Conan O'Brien. I've been to 23 countries. Had a threesome once. Ran a 17:30 3-mile. Had Bono sign my electric guitar. About all I got. For now =)
