It's not "just" a matter of semantics. If you are a photographer for Nat'l Geographic or Reuters or AP or BBC or any of those other places, there are incredibly strict rules about what you can do to your photograph for it to still be a publishable. Too much sharpening? Not allowed. Too much contrast enhancement? Not allowed. [Reuters gives us the honor of knowing what the basic rules are, but it's still at the discretion of the photography editor](http://handbook.reuters.com/index.php/A_Brief_Guide_to_Standards,_Photoshop_and_Captions). These guidelines exist because "just" photographs are intended to be snapshots of reality, not manipulated into a non-existent vision of what the somebody wants you to see. It didn't come off as hip or neat or caring about appearances, it came off as pretentious and uptight. Without knowing the rest of the context, it's impossible to tell what you were doing, or if the person just didn't know how to give a compliment "Why are you dressed so nicely?" -- This is a compliment. Just give some non-douchy reason (that is, don't make them feel like a slob, or give off the "bitch, i know it!" vibe). "Got this new item of clothing," "it's laundry day," "I just felt like getting my swagger on," "i have a date later," whatever. Learn to take the compliment without being annoying.
