TROPHY CASE

I was driving 10-15 mph over the speed limit on the interstate in Missouri, about to pass a semi, when he cut me off. He stayed in front of me for a mile, all the way through a speed trap. Whats the friendliest thing a stranger has done for you on the road? by Nebraska_Actuallyin AskReddit

Most fatalities are caused by drivers, if I'm not mistaken. Most deaths are caused by drivers not seeing motorcycles and pulling out suddenly, hitting them.

Not saying it's right, but the weaving is generally because there are those people who take forever to get anywhere, and you're on a small enough vehicle to get through. I ride, and bikes don't need anywhere near the same amount of space to accelerate or brake, leading to travelling at higher speeds because you can still stop safely. It's the same frustration of "that stupid guy, slowing down traffic," only you take up so little space you can pretty easily get through almost anywhere.

I try to be a pretty safe driver in general (car or motorcycle), but I catch myself sneaking through some tight spaces because some asshole decides to take a turn at 5 mph, or stay neck-and-neck with another asshole going 10 under.

Though that's "8 core." It's 4 Bulldozer modules, which are 2 execution cores that share a bunch of resources. Its not the same performance as a true octacore CPU.

I'm a sterile man. What "flaws" do you have that you're grateful for? by SciddlyWudsin AskReddit

Honestly it's really not. We just liked making absurd statements based on broken logic.

I have a friend who is completely colorblind, shades of gray. He was the butt of a looot of jokes, but he was really good natured (and a stoner).

"Let's throw rocks at Jeff!"
"Yeah, but let's paint them pretty colors first so he can't see them!"

Good times.

TIL The original name of Plants vs. Zombies was Lawn of the Dead but George Romero pitched a fit and they were forced to change it. by tonyh322in todayilearned

Doesn't matter what the point is, it matters what the result is. This is what I expect from people "analyzing" books or movies, who are generally English majors.

As an aside, I overheard two girls talking about poetry the other day, I nearly lost it when I heard, "That's what's nice about great poetry, it doesn't matter what it means, you can just enjoy the message."

What trivial act would you like to ban or make illegal? Personally, I would like to outlaw public speakers who start off by saying, "I can't hear you!" or "Let's try that again!" by danger_mcboomin AskReddit

Honestly, "that sucks" isn't a terrible response. The "good" ones that people say are all annoying and cliche, just whatever comes to mind is really fine. If you make religious implications, you're going to annoy anyone who doesn't share your beliefs. It's best to just say "sorry" or some empathetic remark, maybe "I'm sure s/he would've loved it," if it's in response to something like "I wish s/he were here."

Oh, but "I'm sure s/he would've loved it" can come off as fake and odd if you don't actually know the person in absence, so yeah.

Perhaps "High school English" would've suited better. It's reminiscent of the BS I wrote when forced to analyze a book or movie.

What an English major response. Full of overanalysis and extracted metaphors.

I'm a bit miffed.... First interview for four months and it went down the pan! by JamoAVin jobs

[–]vcarl 0 points1 point ago

Some places are more accepting of dress than others, especially if it's owned by younger people. And perhaps the other people who were dressed worse had an "in," or had a style that matched what the interviewer liked. It's really kind of a crapshoot when it comes to interviews, you're dealing with people, and people are really biased and inconsistent.

Yeah, "sensible" is not the same as "interview attire." Business casual is generally standard for interviews, unless something else is explicitly mentioned. Denim skirt and Converse shoes: not business casual.

If you show up and they think you're underdressed, your interviewers won't think highly of you. If you show up overdressed, worst they'll think is that you really want the job, or just like dressing that way.

Motorola won't upgrade Droid 3 or X2 to ICS; their excuse: ICS will not "improve" these phones enough by mepperin Android

[–]vcarl 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but it at least has huge community support. Even if it's not officially supported, there will be updates in one form or another. CM7 still isn't near stable on the Droid2, I don't want to think about when CM9 will get to it. I'd love to go Droid4 (such a sexy keyboard) but I just can't be sure it won't be a shitty phone in a year and a half

I know just how far you can get, and while it's very far, it's not far enough to be my only phone. 10 hours of battery life while sitting in my pocket, plus performance issues and missing functionality? No thanks. Admittedly I haven't tried since 7.1, but I just ordered a Galaxy Nexus, so I have no reason to now.

Same boat. I just bought a Nexus S (ditching the keyboard, which I never thought I'd do) because it's a Google device and I know they won't stop updating it.

See, the problem with that is that they also locked down the bootloaders on most of their line. I'd be fine if I could just pop Cyanogen on my Droid2, but it's so locked down that development is seriously behind compared to most phones of this generations.

Hell yes Viewtiful Joe. I had like a flashback recently and remembered it, I've been trying to find it locally. I don't even remember anything about it, just that it was awesome.

Dropping out: Is college worth the cost? by york100in TrueReddit

[–]vcarl 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I know that. I'm not lamenting the fact that I'm going to have to put in more effort to get the same job, I made a choice not to go straight for a 4 year degree and I fully understand the consequences, I was just saying it does open more doors. Having any bachelor's degree will allow somebody to get a lot more jobs, but it shows you can work hard, not necessarily that you're smart or well learned.

I do have some accomplishments (second place at an ACM competition, 5th if you include graduate students. I was a freshman, so I feel pretty good about that), but I don't have "products" or anything I could quickly whip out and demonstrate. On the other hand, I'm still in school, so I'm not worried about that.

With all the modern advances, all the advanced weaponry, vehicles, technology, methods of engagement, etc, war still boils down to killing the other side faster than they can kill you.
