TROPHY CASE

I don't know how many of you are into car audio installations, but here goes! by madcaesarin DIY

Nice work! Does the display dim, though? I would not be able to stand having a bright screen like that (I dim all my instrument panels, even).

I've never found any one critic who I agree with often enough to rely on.

Who are your least favorite/most hated critcs? by puresmilinbobin movies

[–]urbanplowboy 6 points7 points ago

To be fair, critiques of movies should not be based on source material, only the movie itself. Also, many people were very confused about the ending of that movie, so in the way that his critique of the ending matched many people's opinions, I think that makes it a very fair review. That's not to say that you or I shouldn't disagree with him.

Can someone explain to me why Aliens is regarded to be as good as Alien, if not better? I don't get it. I just watched both and Aliens is awful in comparison. by mobiuszeroonein movies

[–]urbanplowboy 0 points1 point ago

I think the biggest aspect that makes Aliens decent is Ripley's relationship with Newt.

If you haven't watched the Director's Cut of Aliens, it elaborates A LOT more on why Ripley gets so attached to Newt.

Protecting a hardwood floor? by snowboardfreakin DIY

[–]urbanplowboy 1 point2 points ago

I'm by no means a floor expert, but I believe that if your floor is already in good shape that you can lightly sand over it (or "screen" it) and put down polyurethane. Minwax makes a polyurethane made specifically for floors You'll probably want 3-4 coats to make it really durable. I know in my area, there are people who specialize in doing this sort of thing, that is, recoating floors that are already in decent shape.

I just had to replace a single tile in my 1955 house and thought I'd never find a match, but Daltile had the perfect replacement, just in case you need to try to match your old tile in the future.

I have heard that older pine floors are typically harder that what you can find now because they came from older trees which are now all cut down.

FYI, they make solar powered motion lights in case you wanted a light on the inside or outside and don't want to run power out there.

I've met him and can verify (at least be pretty certain) that is indeed his real hair. He looks like a twelve year old with the face of a 50 year old.

Half of metro Atlanta mortgagees underwater by GentleCoatHangerin Atlanta

[–]urbanplowboy 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, this is the only time in recent history where housing prices have dropped significantly. For the most part, real estate is still a very good investment over time. Also, even if the value drops 60% after making 25 years of payments, you should still have equity in the home and you're making a payment which has not risen in 25 years. After renting for 25 years, you probably will have seen the cost of rent rise a couple hundred percent.

Student trying to figure out best way to prepare footage for television. by xhartin editors

Here's a link to CMT's delivery specs. All I did was google it. A lot of this may seem like jibberish if you're new to it, but basically just put the show to Digibeta, keep your audio at or below -12dB, make the first frame of your music video at 01:00:00:00 and follow their metadata requirements (slate info and tape info).

EDIT: I can't figure out how current this document is. I thought it was odd that it doesn't mention HD delivery since there is a CMT HD channel, but then I found this:

CMT's HD simulcast channel (as with all MTV's HD networks) currently does not carry videos in high definition.

Also, you can still shoot at 24fps (apparently that's what they want), but you will have to put it to tape at 29.97, which means performing a pull down somewhere along the way. Most editing software does this automatically now.

You can even buy a regular wood door slab slightly larger than your bathroom door opening (you can find exterior doors that are taller than 80") for the barn door effect.

All you really need is a few feet of wall space. Then just take out your existing bathroom door/trim and refinish the opening.
