I've learned that the letter yod is the most spiritual letter of the alef bet, as it is the only letter without a base (ie the written letter doesn't touch the bottom line like all other letters do). Hence I would say that the one yod in v'yatsar indicates that animals do have a soul. However, the are second yod in the v'yatsar for man, tells us that man has a greater soul than that of the animals.

Mormon Church apologizes for baptism of dead Jews by LazerAin Judaism

[–]uptoolate712 0 points1 point ago

Good question. I second it. I know what happens with the body of a Jew after death is significant (for example, autopsy is to be avoided and organ donation is discouraged), but I don't know if a soul can be hijacked. Anybody else?

What would be a good type of food to carry in my car to hand out to the homeless I see standing at traffic lights? by uptoolate712in AskReddit

Agreed about the shitty part. But such is life. Still upvote for originality.

Is that something you can find at the grocery store? Or do I need to find the nearest survivalist shop?

How is it that the sight of the wagons convey this message to Yaakov? The message that like the Elders, he is not responsible.

Shabbat Shalom! And thanks for posting. Just what I needed before Shabbos.

I'm not super-learned, but it's my understanding that the commandments for sacrifices cannot be followed without the Temple (which we have been without for 2,000 years).

I understand that Chareidim build walls around their community to protect themselves from outside influences, so they can closely follow Torah. But it really saddens me to hear that a leader of the community has decided that such high walls must built to insulate them from all other Jews. I refuse to believe that's what Hashem wants.

D-Day marked the opening of a new front in the war (France). Long before that, US troops were fighting in North Africa and the Pacific. The Allies also invaded Italy before D-Day.

I was walking the streets of Kolkata in India. Kolkata is a notoriously decaying city were urban, in-your-face poverty is the norm. I was young and idealistic and in fact was spending my last day in India after working on a poverty alleviation project in (somewhat) nearby rural village for the previous month. I'm walking around the city looking for a toy store to buy gifts for the kids at the project I just left. I find one, but suddenly a young boy (maybe 9 years old) with rattty clothes and filthy hair, runs up to me, grabs me by the shirt collar and starts pleading "No Food! No Food! NO FOOD!" I'm so shocked and take aback, I completely freeze up. I'm "saved" by the store security guard who comes outside and chases the kid away. Here I was having spent my last month working to fight poverty, and when I hits me in the face, I do absolutely nothing. I still think about that incident sometimes. Humbling, to say the least.

More antisemitism rears its ugly head at the Occupy Wall Street protests by Deuteronomyin Judaism

First, thank you for clarifying that your message is not an attack, and I also wish to convey that my message is not hostile.

In the strictest sense, yes a right to free speech is protection from the government stifling speech. But when civilians stifle the speech of others, there is certainly some grey area. See the recent court ruling against the Muslim UCI students who conspired to shout down the Israeli ambassador, limiting the ambassador's free speech.

I also said in my comment:

so many others (rightfully so) verbally attacked him and laughed at him.

So I don't personally believe that anyone was stifling his speech, but I understand others may disagree (such as the group of protesters that came to his aid). And just because those others disagree, does not mean they are anti-semites.

I don't see how this is something we should fear. One loudly-spoken, ignorant (and probably homeless) guy decided to implicate Jews as the problem on Wall Street. The caption on the video indicated that dozens of Occupy Wall Street protesters sided with this guy and promoted his message, but that's not true. Yes at the end of the video there was a group of protesters that rallied around the guy to promote free speech, but none of them promoted his message. In fact the reason they went to defend him is because so many others (rightfully so) verbally attacked him and laughed at him. Whether you like it or not Free Speech is a fundamental right, so I have no issue with what the group of protesters did. So we got one crazy guy with a sign. I'm not impressed, or threatened. And if you are, I think your more than a little paranoid.

Hey Reddit, if you had to show a movie to a group of 30 people, age varying from 10-80, which would it be? by stevefaceyin ask

Basically anything from Pixar is fantastic for all age groups. I would say that among those Up, Finding Nemo, and Toy Story 1, 2, or 3 are the best. I've watched all 5 of those movies with age groups similar to what you're talking about and everyone loved the movies.

Grocery store cashiers: do you judge people based on their groceries? by furrytoothpickin ask

[–]uptoolate712 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a grocery store cashier for 2+ years. I rarely ever judged anyone by what they bought. I might pay attention to what you're buying only as a conversation-starter. Example: I see cake and frosting... "Oh, whose birthday is it?" But hardly ever judged anyone based on purchases...

Unless you buy booze before 10am. Then seriously, what the hell?

Why are we supposed to "Never Forget" 9/11? by Rahabin AskReddit

History tends to repeat itself, especially if we forget what happened the last time.

Or if people really remember it, maybe we can use it to help us get beyond the painful, political divisiveness that plagues the country now.

Going back and re-reading this survivor email was refreshing for me personally. Note: The refreshing feeling I get is from the way people involved reacted to the crisis and what the author took from the tragedy, not from the crisis itself.

They can sense the disconnect between the legitimacy of a teacher who actually cares and a crusading white pedagogue.

Then my challenge is to prove (and truthfully so) that I'm the former and not the latter. The article never said, white people can't teach black kids, and to assume that all white TFA teachers are "white pedagogues", is just as racist and destructive as assuming that all black kids need is white educator. Nice job on assuming I was white as well.

Wow. Thanks. This is the kind of info I was looking for. Given they are so selective in the applicants they accept, do you have any advice on what I could do in the next year to strengthen my prospects/better prepare me for the classroom? I have some experience in tutoring and in the classroom (teaching aboard), and I this year I want to do some more volunteer work (maybe even land a job) in school and to study more Spanish (I'm at an intermediate level now). Anything else?
