I wonder who paid for this animation and under what direction or intent.

It was really inspirational and interesting to my computer programmer eyes.

The flow of selectors should be hierarchical and in a logical order:

Select Game -> Select Mode -> Play

Many game menus are sinners in the UX department and cause your eyeballs to bounce around just to see what's the state and find the play button.

  • Current Bnet actually does this almost ok. From top to bottom (Single/Multi) -> 1v1/2v2/3v3 -> Race -> Play. Though there are other "mode" buttons on the right.
  • LoL almost have this done well from top left to top-right but then at the end 2 play buttons appear at the bottom right.

What's that high pitched sound that comes out of phone chargers? by ubershmekelin askscience

[–]ubershmekel[S] 0 points1 point ago

But the pitch is much higher than 50/60 hz (European voltage scheme here).

Maybe the rectifier circuit vibrates at a higher frequency because of multiple phases interacting within the inductors?

Introducing Absolute Ratio by ubershmekelin math

[–]ubershmekel[S] 1 point2 points ago

Frequency X is an octave of frequency Y if:

  • Y = 2X

or

  • Y = 0.5X

So abs_ratio(Y, X) == 2 is a test if 2 frequencies are octaves.

Coincidentally both absolute value and absolute ratio are both very simple piecewise functions. The use-case you mentioned is indeed an important one.

Just like absolute value is the distance between things, absolute ratio is the multiplicand between things.

It can be useful on occasion.

That's exactly the case with absolute value (x if x > 0, -x otherwise). It's a simple if that we don't really need, yet it helps think about certain concepts.

Israel is forcing airlines to cancel flights of +1000 peace activitists trying to visit the Palestinian West Bank. by steve_bbin worldnews

[–]ubershmekel 0 points1 point ago

96% of the West Bank's population is administered by the West Bank, 55% is controlled and administered by the West Bank.

So I assume you want to run a weighted average on Israel's score with the West Bank so we could know the democratic rating of the United States of Israel and Palestine - USIP.

USIP Democratic rating by population = (7.53 * 8 + 4.97 * 4) / 12 = 6.67

Is that a more interesting observation?

Moral relativism doesn't mean what you think it means.

Moral relativism may be any of several descriptive, meta-ethical, or normative positions. Each of them is concerned with the differences in moral judgments across different people and cultures:

  1. Descriptive relativism describes the way things are, without suggesting a way they ought to be. It seeks only to point out that people frequently disagree over what is the most 'moral' course of action.

  2. Meta-ethical relativism is the meta-ethical position that the truth or falsity of moral judgments is not objective. Justifications for moral judgments are not universal, but are instead relative to the traditions, convictions, or practices of an individual or a group of people.[1] The meta-ethical relativist might say "It's moral to me, because I believe it is".[2]

  3. Normative relativism is the prescriptive or normative position that, because there is no universal moral standard by which to judge others, we ought to tolerate the behavior of others - even when it runs counter to our personal or cultural moral standards.[3] Most philosophers find that this position is incoherent, or at least that it is unclear how meta-ethical relativism can lead to 'ought' statements.[3]

I'm pretty sure none of the above are relevant. The Israeli letter is mainly a complaint concerning the activists prioritization.
