What's the worst case of BS gun information you've ever heard from someone? by TheMorningDeucein guns

[–]tylertennisman 9 points10 points ago

I posted this as its own topic in /r/guns, but it didn't get any attention. I hope it will be found here:

The author, a psychologist, talks about why people have an irrational fear of guns.

Elliptical pool problem, part II by tylertennismanin math

[–]tylertennisman[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'd be a little frustrated if the solution is as clean as that. I'll take a look at it in a bit when I get some more time. What's the language/formatting you used? Is it formatted for Mathematica or something similar?

Hi r/entomology, can someone recognize this bug? by psilocybinmushroomsin Entomology

I'm sorry, I meant lamellate antennae, not flagellate. Flagellate would be whip-like. Merriam-Webster says:

Latin flagellatus, past participle of flagellare, from flagellum, diminutive of flagrum whip; perhaps akin to Old Norse blaka to wave

M-W defines lamella as:

a thin flat scale, membrane, or layer

Sorry for any confusion...

Those antennae are called flagellate

Thought exercise: Is the border of an elliptical pool an ellipse? by tylertennismanin math

[–]tylertennisman[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'll try to get a write-up done tonight to share that investigates the question the other way around. That is, I've shown what is true of the distance between two "concentric" ellipses, given that the major and minor vertices of the two ellipses are both equidistant from each other.

It gets to the answer, but I'm not sure it is a proof that satisfactorily answers the question. I want to find a way to build a border by taking a tangent line to a point on the ellipse, then take a line segment of magnitude one pointing away from the ellipse, pinning yourself down at the end of that line segment. Repeat for all points on the ellipse, and you've built your border. Then take the mathematical description you have for that border and try to fit it into the general form of an ellipse.

Thanks for leaving it up. This is why I cautioned to define what "uniform width" means mathematically. To someone not mathematically inclined, they would look at the border of a sufficiently oblong ellipse (a>>b) that was build with the radial method and would see that the border is NOT uniform.

The way to build the border should be to take a point on the pool, step out some distance in the direction of the gradient (or a vector perpendicular to the tangent line at that point) and pin yourself down on the border. Repeat ad infinitum until you have a simple closed curve representing the border.

What were some of the most impressive computational feats prior to the advent of computers? by blindConjecturein math

I'm reading a book called When Computers were Human by David Allen Grier, which goes into a lot of detail about de Prony's work, like how he built on ideas Nevil Maskelyne used, how he tweaked the calculations so they were no more complicated than a long string of addition and subtraction steps so his "average Joe" computers could perform the calculations. There's really a lot to the story, and there is much more than this covered in the book. It's a great read if you're interested in some math history.
