I'm sure you have it worse though.... by kmikes33in funny

[–]tsxy 1 point2 points ago

The problem is. When you are teenager, you only know so much about life. It might as well be the worst one have seen (so far).

But life is long and tough, as one grow and look back, some of those painful moments becomes nothing comparing to what one experiences later.

However, an older person should never discredit a teen (or younger) person's trouble or the pain they are going through. Because one can only compare to what he or she has experienced so far in person.

When this process gets a hit of an action, it returns the result immediately. If it doesn't get a hit, it expands the search into a few other larger databases where it will get KB articles etc. Which is why if there is no solution, it actually takes longer for the dialog box to disappear as we try more sources....

The actual crash dump upload has been in the background since Windows 7 and shouldn't block you.

For the last part.... If you are a developer and received 1000 crashes (easy for most developers who signed up for the program), which one are you going to fix first? The ones that's likely to happen, which we also collect statistics and forward to the developers.

The thing is... over time, as more and more bugs are fixed, the corner cases starts to dominate. Those are sometimes very hard to reproduce in developer's environment with no easy fix. For example, some crystal on the a motherboard is placed too close to CPU and drift 0.2% of central frequency every hour due to the fluctuating temperature. Eventually it results in a computation error that causes your program to crash. This is almost impossible to reproduce by individual developers but we actually caught this via the hardware logo program.

Rare crashes like these happens everyday which will cause the dialog to try to look for information for a long long time....

I apologize for the current behavior but we do have plans to fix this. :)

P.S.: The above are personal opinion and advise only and doesn't represent official position of Microsoft in any way shape or form.

I can't take credit for the hard work the team. But your appreciation make me warm and fuzzy inside... :)

Half-life 2 is too old for any maintenance work to be worth while. Fixing the bug is likely to cause more issues for others...

Guy from Microsoft here... who actually works on a system related to this...

What happens here is a crash or hang (freeze) happens and a background process collects the state of the program just crashed. This is then send to Microsoft. We hired 2000 monkeys to look at the files (I.e. crash dumps) and track down the developers who owns the code and ask them to fix.

Once the fix completes, they are either pushed back to your computer via Windows Update or third party updates. Once this happens, you shall not hit the same problem ever again.

The problem is, this takes time. It usually takes sometime between when the crash hits frequent enough until it reaches the developer. For example, your video card driver just crashed, we collect the information and send to the manufacture, which takes them at least a couple of days to figure out who owns the piece of code. Then it's fixed, checked in, tested, beta, bundled, tested and certified again, then put on updates then pushed to you. This is a process that usually takes weeks if not months as we try very very hard to not introduce more instabilities into the system when updates are pushed out.

Once the updates is out in the wild, what happens is the developer will contact Microsoft and we will produce instruction that gets pulled down by your crash report. If a proper fix exists, then the updates gets applied and you are in good shape.

Overall, please keep those crashes coming, we love them and it makes everyone happy! Have you noticed that you Win7 box blue screens much less often? This is due to your collective effort!

TL;DR: keep your auto update on and keep your auto defrag on. Your system will become more and more stable over time.

P.S.: The above are personal opinion and advise only and doesn't represent official position of Microsoft in any way shape or form. P.S.S.: No monkeys are harm in the process of making your PC better.

Are african american's more likely to commit violent? If so, what's the cause? If not, why there is a perception of such? by tsxyin AskReddit

  1. That's a good answer. Have my upvote sir.

  2. One thing i've always failed to understand is how can police target black people to pull them over when one sits in their car...

Follow up question: Why do you think medias exaggerate the black stereotype?

  1. After reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias I'm still not sure how is confirmation bias reflected in this case. Can you elaborate a bit more?

  2. I know reddit crowd will hate me for saying this.... Esentially what you are saying is that one social (racial) group is more likely to commit violent crimes (caused by social economic issues), the police is not allowed to target them specifically? In other words, if you got a list of where problems like to occur (health, infrastructure etc.), wouldn't you focus your resouces on the most problematic areas?

Are you saying racial profiling is to some degree to be caused by media portrayal of the black stereotype?

That kinda defeats the purpose of paying for the service in the first place. If I can't acquire the music via the service's library, what am I paying them for?

I got my FooBar rolling with me on local music :)

Just to add to that, I still pirate music and movies for this very reason. I'll be glad to pay for a music service for $10-15/month that allows me to get unlimited streaming + limited non-drm download access to a good library (including asian songs) with 192kbps mp3 + flac/ape files.

On the movie front, I refuse to pay for movies that's over a year old, encoded in youtube quality (720p@400kbps?) with device restrections and sucky audio quality. For movies, I would be happy for a 720p@850kbps stream with 128kbps audio for movies with no more than 1 month delay from when movies hits rental till streaming available. Paying $20-25 a month for this would be totally worth it.

As Gabe stated, piracy is a service issue.

I see no point on pay for a game that can only be played on 3 machines, doesn't work on newer OS, requires an active internet connection, installs rootkits, asks me to manually install 30 updates, signin 3 differnet accounts or kicks my girl friend off netflix in another room....
