If you want to get into Orbiter, but are very daunted by the UI, MFDs, etc, definately start out with KSP. The orbital mechanics are very similar (with KSP being more casual), and it will truly teach you the basics of space flight.

Once you figure out how to basically fly, try out Orbiter to get the real experience!

If you're in a nullsec corp, try salvaging corpie's ratting wrecks. Or just ninja salvage mission runner wrecks. You'll need to scan them down however, and go to a mission hub like Ichoriya.

You can run security missions for any faction you like, just use the agent finder. Go from 1-4, or until you can afford the ships you want for whatever you'd like.

Whatever you do, don't mine!

NOTE: Market trading takes a LOT of isk to start out with, and you have to know quite a bit about the game to really work the markets.
