TROPHY CASE

getting paid to drive cross country? by comptechgsrin cars

[–]tmiw 2 points3 points ago

It's a lot cheaper but it does add miles to people's cars and subjects them to more wear and tear and the risk of accidents. The shipping companies charge a lot because of the insurance and peace of mind, really.

That said, doing a cross-country road trip would be cool at least once.

Has VW reliability improved over the last few years? by superluminal_girlin Volkswagen

[–]tmiw 1 point2 points ago

Any car will have reliability issues if it's not properly maintained.

That is true, but some car brands are more resistant to such abuse than others.

California goes from $9 billion to $16 billion in the red as Governor pushes ballot tax hike. by secaa23in sandiego

[–]tmiw 1 point2 points ago

We spend more per student than many other first world nations, yet see worse results.

California schools have to deal with different issues than schools in other states. I'm not sure you'd see the effect you'd expect if you simply gave California schools the same amount per student as, say, Utah.

California is the 6th most taxed state, not #1.

Anyway, the real problem is that we gave we the taxpayer the power to spend and took revenue powers away from our representatives.

Anybody having issues with TW Cable, specifically NNTP/P2P over the past week or so? by ilovefacebookin sandiego

Glasnost doesn't even finish running for me because my SBG6580 reboots itself if it gets too many connections in too short of a period. ಠ_ಠ

How do you get it to run without killing the connection?

Starbucks? I think Lesat's has Wi-Fi too, if you want a non-chain.

Having to replace the transmission twice on my old car makes me hope that I won't have any problems with the DSG during the life of my GTI, since karma and all. Maybe.

I live really close to work, so I'm kinda surprised it's not half that.

[–]tmiw[S] 2 points3 points ago

Also, I would have probably hit 5,000 sooner if it wasn't for the car accident I got into the day after I drove the thing off the lot. ಠ_ಠ But yeah, no problems since it came back from the shop. \o/

suggested modifications list? by YGOnewguyin GolfGTI

[–]tmiw 1 point2 points ago

Also keep in mind that if you do this, VW may blame any problems with your powertrain during the warranty period on the tune and deny warranty coverage. Especially since dealers and VW will see that you're tuned the instant they plug the diagnostic computer into the car.

I have a CW but I sometimes wish I got Shadow Blue. Too bad VW's getting rid of it. :(

Four vs. two-door. What did you get and why? by vrrrrin GolfGTI

4 door because it's easier to carry passengers.

buyer's remorse

Indeed. I heard about the new stuff on the 2013 GLI and I started thinking that I should have waited another year instead of getting the GTI, heh.

19 F4A Is anyone willing to help a young woman in crisis? by randomthrowawayname_in r4r

[–]tmiw 1 point2 points ago

may force me to move back in with my abusive parents

You're an adult. No one can force you to do anything you don't want to do.

That said, perhaps you can talk to the financial aid people at your college and see what they can do. I know when I went to college you had to be 25+ or married or in the military to be considered "independent" from your parents, but they may have help for special cases. You don't have to drop out due to money issues, especially if this one class is the only one you're having problems with.

On the other hand, the Super Bowl would come back if we did, bringing in tons of tourist revenue every few years. Difficult choice, to be honest.

I'm looking to buy a mobile home somewhere in San Diego. Advice, please. by anarkhosyin sandiego

[–]tmiw 1 point2 points ago

If you have 20% down (or less if you're willing to pay PMI) you could pretty much buy a condo in a (cheaper) area of SD. For example, here are some for sale in Mira Mesa. Mobile homes aren't really worth it since you'd pretty much pay HOA fees in the form of "space rent" anyway. And the whole "not usually in good areas" thing, too.

In other news, the UT still seems to have a massive hard-on for the 10th Ave. site:

“Obviously, the $200 million we’re going to get (from the NFL for a new stadium project) is a big step; it’s huge,” Fabiani says. “There is some good news. There’s the $200 million, and there seems to be a consensus on the type of facility we want, a retractable roof, multipurpose. We’re still split on the site, between the East Village and 10th Avenue Marine Terminal (the best site).
