TIL Roman Gladiators were mostly vegetarians, and they were called Barley Men because they ate lots of barley.

tjw 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

they were Vegetarians and not Vegans.

I've always gone by the definitions that Vegetarian Times (magazine) used which was that a vegetarian is an herbivore - a plant eater - while a vegan is someone who avoids using any products that involve cruelty to another animal.

I think SithLordMohawk's point was just that. You can't be a vegan if your job description includes killing animals (even if those animals are only humans).

TIL a fun secondary use for an adjustable crescent wrench!

tjw 1 point2 points 1 day ago* [-]

If you manage to break a crescent wrench with a zip tie, you deserve some sort of award.

I somehow doubt that this would work without a rigid surface on the other side of the zip tie. If you manage to do this with just a wrench and a free-floating zip tie, you also deserve some type of award.

I am a theatrical electrician

Also, what kind of electrician doesn't have a side cutters in his pocket? :) Using a knife on zip ties is probably an even worse practice than the wrench.

What's your best troll dad story?

tjw 0 points1 point 5 days ago[-]

This doesn't count as a Dad story since it was a friend who was relaying an life lesson from his own father so it's more of a troll friend story.

I was fishing with a friend many years ago and it was getting dark so we were building a fire pit on the river bank. I smashed my finger between some rocks. It was one of those injuries where your finger nail turns purple and you have about 12 hours of throbbing pain from the swelling. Well, it hurt like hell ,so I was going on and on about the pain. After a while and one too many "fucking hell, my finger hurts" comments, my friend says in a concerned manner, "Oh really? Let me have a look at it." . I presented my swollen purple finger and he made a flicking motion with his thumb and forefinger and landed a blow right on the nail. He just said, "My old man taught me that one!" and laughed his ass off. It sounds pretty harsh, but I was laughing about it too after a few minutes.

Out of nowhere, the Vikings seem to have acquired a potential franchise quarterback.

tjw [S] 0 points1 point 5 days ago[-]

He's an exciting player for sure, but not a franchise QB.

Perhaps you're not familiar with the Viking's QB "depth" chart for the past 20 years. Being exciting automatically bumps you to the top of best backup quarterbacks of all-time. It's enough for me to imagine him as a potential franchise quarterback anyway.

I'm sorry, but weren't people saying this about Tarvaris Jackson when he was drafted?

Maybe when he was drafted, but I think that that hope faded pretty quickly once he was given the ball. Webb is raw for sure (rookie), but it's hard to argue that he's not showing enormous potential on the field so far.

Bedrock Geologic Map of Iowa [Large PDF]

did the meteorite hit dead-on and punch a straight hole, or hit at a glance and make a more diagonal hole?

I'm not a geologist, but I would say that it's pretty unlikely. The meteorite itself was about 1 mile in diameter and left a round crater 24 miles in diameter so if there was a glancing impact, all trace of it was probably ripped up by the crater. I think the reason almost all craters on earth are round is that meteorites tend to slow down and burn up the more atmosphere they have to transverse which makes glancing impacts (and oblong craters) pretty rare. The steeper the approach, the better chance for an explosive impact.

I just had a skin graft put in my mouth as a result of three days of chewing tobacco use. AMA.

tjw 2 points3 points 6 days ago[-]

What's different about Grizzly?

It's cheap. Very cheap compared to Kodiak which is the market it was targeted to. Prior to a recent major spike in tobacco tax here, it was $1.69/can which was less than half the price of Kodiak. Most users consider it weaker than Kodiak, most users also consider this a good thing.

I think the reason it is so cheap has something to do with it appearing after the big US tobacco settlement was over. I have nothing to back that up though.

tjw 1 point2 points 6 days ago[-]

in reality the tobacco in your mouth is just just rough in general on the lining of your gums, when you pull (suck the spit through your teeth) it presses the tobacco firmly on your gums.

The crunchy bits that people mistake for "glass" are actually salt crystals.

Noob question: what does a completely self-sufficient year look like, diet-wise?

tjw 0 points1 point 6 days ago* [-]

I think the distinction between vegetarian and vegan is that vegetarians don't eat meat and vegans don't make use of anything that animals were used to produce (food or otherwise). Bouillon cubes would technically be eating meat (in my opinion). Nothing is written in black and white in either case though, I guess.

Doesn't freezing everything take a lot of energy?

Nope. They use less than leaving a 60 Watt light bulb on. I have a 20 cubic foot freezer which is around the largest consumer model available. It only uses 480kWH (about $55 worth) of electricity per year.

If you're very concerned with electricity, there is a company that sells PV powered freezers for not much more than conventional ones. When all is said and done, it is more expensive than just buying electricity off the grid though.

On average, how long do you spend working on your garden, which is 1/4 of an acre? How much work is it?

I probably average something like an hour a day.

Yeah, maybe there's an vegetarian way to make a good stock, but I would think normal bouillon cubes would be out (made from animal fat and collagen).

What is the best dog breed for hunting grouse, pheasant and possibly duck and goose?

tjw 0 points1 point 7 days ago[-]

The advantage of buying a versatile breed is most parents are tested. In the case of the LM, the pups can't be registered unless the parents are hunt tested dogs.

Yeah, I've also noticed that people who sell trained retrievers often sell what they call "Started Dogs" which are basically pups that have been house trained and some basic obedience/retriever training. Still costly, but cheaper than a fully-trained working dog.

most will guarantee them and replace them if necessary.

Good luck getting a similar guarantee from the daughter though :)

tjw 1 point2 points 7 days ago* [-]

It doesn't matter what breed you get, you might end up with a dog that won't hunt. Some are gun shy, some will lose self-control when excited, some just have a hard mouth. Most of the time you can't train these behaviours away. If your primary goal is a hunting dog, your only safe bet is buying a trained animal; You know what you're getting, but it will cost you.

In my own experience, I've had 4 dogs. The first was a cross between Golden Retriever, Lab, and other. She was by far the best hunting dog I ever had. I thought I was on to something so when she died, I got a AKC Golden Retriever that ended up being extremely gun shy. Next, I got a AKC Yellow Lab which ended up being border-line retarded (which is not an uncommon lab trait I've found) and had serious genetic problems which left her crippled and shortened her painful, short life. Finally, I got an old mutt on craigslist from someone who was moving and much to my surprise, after going about 15 years without a hunting buddy, I finally have a great hunting dog again. YMMV.

I hope you like potatoes.

I freeze beans, beets, sweet corn, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, and tomato sauce, but the only vegetable that I make part of every meal is potatoes which I store in cold box in my basement.

I also freeze a lot of soup and salsa that I make out of the more perishable/freezer-poor vegetables (cabbage, tomatoes, onions, peppers, rutabaga). I guess the soup is probably out (or just not good) if you don't eat meat though.

The only thing I can is pickles.

If you want to be really self-sufficient growing your own food, you would need one hell of a large garden as a vegetarian. My garden is about 1/4 acre and that's not even enough to provide my family with vegetables all year. Take meat out of the equation and you're talking about some serious size requirements.
