The reason it's important with Alan Wake, was that it was always hyped as showcase of direct ex 10, and the latest intel tech. he early tech demos were amazing. So it's reasonable for people to rip apart the graphics now. Sad as I really did like the game on 360, and there was a lot of nice atmospheric touches, though the facial animations and voice acting were mostly terrible, especially compared to the promo mini series they did(amazing. would love a tvof that).

because they have earned that reputation. Steam was also hated, but Valve earned their reputation as a customer focused business over the years. EA has not done that, hence people have the very reasonable reaction of not trusting what EA does to be in their interests. Ideally EA, like most companies would like a a nice symbiotic relationship where we happily give them our money:)

I have no problems with Origin so far,a n if EA runs it well I'll continue to use it.

I don't think anyone asks that question at face value...

condescending? I've been told I'm condescending before. Sometimes this is just me assuming by what people say and do, that they simply do not understand something, and explaining something comes across that way, for a variety of reasons (possibly because one or more egos is involved). Sometimes it's the build up of frustration that you basically have to work/think/act in a way you 'limiting" and have to be considerate of others that may be causing problems (IMO) for themselves and you, and you are the person that has to deal with that, simply because you are aware of it and they aren't. All they get is "you are being condescending" and you can't respond "well you are being an idiot", because that's not true nor does that help anything to approch it like that...

basically the person that is aware of more things has to be more responsible, and that can get quite fatiguing.

So I try hard when I know, or suspect that I'm the idiot in the room, to see if I'm causing the problem I know what it's like to feel like I'm the one that has to put up or shut up because someone has their ego where it should be. :)

I've heard it theorized that a lot of the PTSD we are seeing in western society, is because we intermix our civil and military classes. I.e. as dblagbro was saying. We condition our children to act in a civil society then they are faced with a different set of realities when they enter war, and then the reintroduction back into civilian life is incredibly jarring for the mind to cope with.

I do not have experience there though.

Without spoiling anything, what movie has your favorite ending? by PickMeMrKotterin AskReddit

[–]theoptionsreduced 0 points1 point ago

guessed the ending of the film from the previews, but when i saw the film, I was actually impressed and realized that reducing that movie to that 'twist' was not doing the film justice.

I liked it a lot more than I thought despite knowing the end from the start.

Sony "will probably be the last to announce" next-gen plans by dextor7in gamernews

[–]theoptionsreduced 1 point2 points ago

Good stuff. As we proceed further into the whole expanding/maturing gaming culture/market, the risk of a misstep in launching first is greater as well. I.e.potentially misguessing the direction for the next 5-10 years. Sony and MS will probably be fairly similar, and we will see systems that have a lot of flexibility, that will long run be focused on electronic game distribution, and mobile integration. MS, I suspect will leverage Wins8/mobile/tablet/kinect(probably by using that brand for tablet camera and voice interface) and the next xbox as seamlessly as possible. Sony has all the pieces there as well, and has laptops/TVs/ movies/music/mobile phones/android which hopefully they will also integrate well, but I'm not holding my breath as they failed horribly at competing with itunes.

I think we are beginning to see the beginning of the appetite for a new gen, with things like Bf3, but for most gamers the current games still look and play great or good enough on the current gen consoles.

Should be interesting.

His writing is pretty mediocre, his research and technical imagination is pretty impressive. He was way ahead of his time in many areas of tech thrillers.

Also he did Westworld (yes, themeparks gone amuck are featured in that and Future World, and to some degree in Looker).

what I meant was building an infrastructure to make sure that the console experience worked for non source game mods, and to review mods that are 'safe', is a lot of overhead... they don't even do that for their own games. The mod communities mostly run themselves. I'm curious to how much oversight they will have for the PC platform.

Because in the end it's not really about race, religion or sexual orientation. It's about US (people you know and people who are in your group) and THEM (people that you think of as NOT in your group). I see it myself I see it in others. Try to do the best I can.

sadly Unreal Tournament 3 on ps3 had two amazing features:

  1. playing with mouse and keyboard

and

  1. the ability to load custom maps

I'm not sure a quality control or disclaimer would be sufficient in the case of mods here though, and as the UT3 never was very popular we didn't get to see how successful that was, or where the problems arose, to my knowledge anyway.

Sony "will probably be the last to announce" next-gen plans by dextor7in gamernews

[–]theoptionsreduced 2 points3 points ago

it's not that simple. There were so many factors involved. If they simply see it as Sony pissing away a lead with bad decisions, than that's just silly. MS does a lot of research into the market leader when they enter into a new market. They realized a lot of areas the console market could be approached, and the time was right for a lot of things that weren't new, but they were the right time for them.

Nintendo also came out of left field and changed(for a significant time) the whole game. The market share is significant, but you could also say Sony not losing even more in a market where they were last to launch, did not have any franchises that were as large as Halo for exclusive, and had inferior online, was pretty impressive, and speaks to the loyalty (fanboys?) that MS feared so much.

where are the latest most accurate numbers? I was under the, apparently false, impression Sony was ahead in every place in the world accept the US(nothing to sneeze at, mind you.)

The market is exactly like we consumers should like it. Two very strong players working hard against each other to win our money.

PSx launched with the first real time 3d graphics in the console market as I recall. A huge marketing campaign, and a fairly neutral position in the market(compared to Xbox launching during the height of people disliking MS as a company). Launch time is definitely a factor. I just don't think it was as important as other factors in these cases.

To me MS's most brilliant and important move (though not the most innovative, as everyone had online before xbox launched --sony and Sega both did it previously) was to position Xbox live as a social platform. Friends play games with friends and they play with friends on the same platform. Halo was the other huge pawn there to cement that.

Sony's online strategy before that was that the developers could control the online per game(publishers and devs liked this and why EA signed exclusively with SONY). Gamer's preferred Xboxlive (same thing with steam). Took a long time for sony to play catch-up. I think we all recognize that when you launch is important. You don't need to be first, but you need to hit the market at a sweet spot(with a huge number of factors), where you either blow the competition away, or you are in position to migrate you users to the next generation (apple).

MS sacrificed a lot to go first, because for them it was important,a nd they thought that was the main reason Sony was number 1. That sacrifice might hurt them in the next gen, but from where they were coming from it was an all or nothing gamble, and only they could afford the risk and the sacrifices for that risk. Nintendo wisely, or luckily suspected all this and went an entirely different direction. Not sure what they are going to do now though. The Wii-U launching first I doubt will do much for them as again the rules and situation has changed.

Sony made a lot of missteps, and Microsoft needed that headstart badly. If Sony had handled their launch better both from PR and from pricing, they would have been fine. People thinking that it was simply due to launching second are grossly simplifying the situation (IMO).

They came from a impossible to touch first place last gen and the gen previous, and they were confident about this. They were of course way over confident, and everyone read that as arrogant... but again it's many other factors.

I also heard that the majority of people who were against gay marriage in California were Latino and African american voters. Which boggled my mind.

edit: My mistake. I meant the majority of those demographics(but do not rely on me as a source as I don't recall the source). The latino population in california is as actually pretty high though. Pretty neck n neck with the "white" population..

DICE Seeks to Curb Battlefield Cheating by dennein gamernews

[–]theoptionsreduced 0 points1 point ago

I play mostly pc games, but i get the feeling that people who cheat, are not wanting to play by the rules. They like to feel clever and also the creative aspect of breaking the established rules. I.e. as a non-cheater I used to think they were just skilless players that wanted to win any way they could... but in watching many younger players who are prone to use hacks, they seem to almost see hacking games as a game unto itself. While this isn't always a negative thing , it certainly is for those of us trying to play and be respectful of the 'rules' of the game. But I'm sure ther are still a lot of hackers just want an easy path to WIN/PWN though.

Microsoft: No New Xbox in 2012 by dennein gamernews

[–]theoptionsreduced 1 point2 points ago

R&D still? I'd suspect they were in R&D since the 360 launched and probably have lines of R&D from prior. I think most of the big gen have their lines of R&D and plans set for what the market/economy does, and what they expect their competition to do. I suspect they will launch in late 2013. I suspect this because PC is gaining a much greater share of the gaming market again and this is usually when consoles start their hype cycle.

There's a number of things to worry about, though, including making a compelling enough leap in features and tech at a feasible ROI for developers. Sure they can have this level of graphics and feature x and y now, but are consumers going to spend enough to make that worth it. Creating games with a noticeable leap in graphics etc takes more time and therefore money, but will it be enough to lure the consumer into paying for that?

I have to say skyrim is cliche, but it is handled in a more mature fashion than in most fantasy games. It really creates something quite beautiful. I mostly dislike fantasy. Anything with elves, magic, tunics, orcs, is going to turn me way off. I eventually got Skyrim, and enjoy it greatly, but it's not because of those elements, but despite them.

In reality they seemed to look the other way as often as they were able, but there was a lot of rampant piracy. There's also licensing liability issues with people running emulators for other platforms. This is a grey area legally I think. Sony reps said basically outright they wished they could support homebrew on the platform, or find some way to make it work with out it just opening a flood gate of piracy as they thought it was pretty cool.

I was surprised at how lenient they were for a long time. There was much more they could do to shut down CFW, but they did not.
