Men are disposable tools: Michelle Obama advises young girls to find partners who are "useful" to them by Zerbuin MensRights

[–]thechort 19 points20 points ago

Useful is kinda an odd word to use, but when I have relationships, it's with people who add value to my life. And I would expect that others would have similar requirements in their relationships.

It seems like nit-picking to me based on one poorly chosen word. The basic advice is sound, surround yourself with people of value. You would tell people something different? Of course there's other advice about being a person of value, but that doesn't make this bad advice. You be the best person you can be and surround yourself with the people who make you better.

And where did the "disposable" thing in the headline come from? I didn't see it anywhere in the article, and it doesn't seem to be related to the advice given.

Prison as a means of rehabilitation is a myth.

Nope, it's just not currently happening in America because we send too many people to jail, meaning our prisons are overcrowded and dangerous, lacking in basic services much less actual rehabilitation services (education, therapy, etc).

However, it does exist in other parts of the world, say, Sweden for example. It could exist again here if there weren't so many political factors involved, including the number of people, like yourself, who believe that prison for rehabilitation is merely a pipe dream, or that the very concept of rehabilitation makes little sense.

The idea that it is somehow "spiteful" or "arrogant" to believe in right and wrong is a logical fallacy.

This isn't the argument people are making. The argument people are making is that the ways in which you would choose to enforce your beliefs on what is right and wrong are spiteful or arrogant. Your posts give the impression that you would abandon/punish those with whom you disagree, rather than trying to show them the error of their ways.

That's an attempt to bargain, and it's not rude or mistreating the employees unless you won't take no for an answer or do it in an abusive manner. It's just informing the person you're dealing with that you have other options and explaining that you feel that their offering could use improvement.

If the answer is, "you're welcome to go to the grocery store then," then ok, I probably will. Isn't the whole idea of a fruit stand that it should have the best fruit for the best price, since I had to go all the way out to the farm to buy straight from the grower, instead of paying to have it shipped into town?

In any case, business models aside, that's your bosses way of saying that the prices are firm, and that's fine. But don't mistake the thing you're responding to as "being treated like crap." Trying to bargain at a fruit stand is not unreasonable.

Frat boys intentionally perpetuate these stereotypes. Many I've talked to, it's because they grew up somewhere where it wasn't cool to be intelligent, and thus they hide their own intelligence if they have any, drink until what they had goes away, and act macho, in hopes of impressing... somebody?

I'd look into solar power for something like that... seems like it might be better than a generator or disposable batteries or whatever, quiet, green, not ridiculously expensive.

There are 90W solar systems out there for around $300, which would include almost everything you'd need to power a fuckton of LEDs all week. You'd have to add something like a deep cycle marine battery to that, so maybe $400 total to power the thing with solar. And that would power a pretty huge one.

You could probably get it much cheaper than that, depending on your power requirements I've seen 45 watt systems under $200.

There are also LED strings that come with little solar panels on stakes that you could just lay out, they charge during the day and come on automatically at night, much like the little solar path lights. Not sure if there are really good bright ones like that though, the ones I got are very dim.

Take a look at what my daughter said about her Ken doll. Reddit, what great quotes do you have from your kids? by hunterlakerin AskReddit

[–]thechort 5 points6 points ago

Who else to blame?

You have forgotten that no matter what else happens, you are the one responsible for raising your child. The state offers education, but the state isn't responsible for raising your kid. If your kid is an idiot/lacks basic knowledge that everyone should have about the world, it's your fault, no one else's.

How am I to know this piece of information is missing from her knowledge base?

How are you to know? You haven't ever looked at a globe together? You don't ask her about school, help her with her homework, talked about the world?

I don't give two fucks anyways.

And there's your problem, and your child's.

Wrong, you paid for a license to use the work. The work was still created, and is still owned by others.

However, I do believe that djing is about more than the original music, it's about creating something new using the source materials. It's clearly derivative, and you thus pay for the license, but it's clearly creative and value-add above and beyond the source material. If you're (really) good at it, you deserve to be paid to do it.

There are definitely merits to author's arguments in that article.

But, the flip side of the coin is that in the music business, your value is related to your draw. Not every band that packs a venue full does it by shaming their friends in to going. That usually doesn't even work unless you're decent to start with, and the bands that I've seen really pack small venues were clearly amazing. They have a following because they're good, people who see them once want to see them again and they make sure those people know where they'll be playing next.

If a band has no draw, it doesn't mean they're bad, but it does mean they're worth less. A band is a business that contracts with a venue for their mutual benefit, partially the fact that bands who are known to be good will draw people into the venue. It doesn't matter how good the music is if nobody's heard of them/ nobody goes "oooh, x is playing here, I've gotta see them," then two things are wrong. 1) You didn't bring anybody to my club that night. 2) You're probably not very good, unless you're very new.

That' the thing about this article, he treats it as if having a following and being of quality are unrelated. That's bullshit. One doesn't guarantee the other, but they are highly related. And the value of a band as a business is obviously highly related to their following. Them's just the facts.

Plenty of people complain about the quality of pop-music, but that doesn't change the fact that it makes the people involved shitloads of money because tons of people like it and go out of their way to see it or buy things related to it.

They ship 10,000 to Walmart too, but Walmart only sells so many. Not everybody goes to the same place to get a TV. Volume means a million units a month or more, often. When you're making that much of something, you have to really have a robust distribution chain to sell it all. 10,000 is a drop in the bucket. The more places people can buy your thingy, usually the more you can sell.

I have been informed I was wrong, that glowy thing is just an indicator, FYI.

Did I Use The Right Parts by maekkin StonerEngineering

[–]thechort 0 points1 point ago*

I still offered a lot of good advice about terminal forming and such. Sorry I was mistaken about the operation... I just figured an indicator would actually be visible, rather than hidden inside the device inside the air channel where it would be perfectly situated as an air heater. It's a reasonable assumption to make, no need to be a dick about

EDIT: Also, if you were using a heating element that gets glowing hot, it should still ideally be ceramic... a metal screen used for direct conduction at the right temps should last quite some time.

[–]thechort 1 point2 points ago*

The only problem with using bare copper for contacts is that the surface will oxidize pretty quickly, reducing the quality of your electrical connection, and it will get worse with time. Of course, if you don't mind cleaning your contacts (like scrubbing with steel wool) regularly, then you can get away with it.

Stainless might be good, if you're using that kind of gauge it should be able to handle the current without heating up or anything, and it shouldn't corrode. Best would be something like gold plated copper, but that gets hard to find/expensive.

It might not be that expensive to get one plated though, you could call up a local jeweler and see if they could do it and how much it would cost... A quick search online seems to find some places that could probably do it, seems fairly cheap. I saw one place claiming about $2-3/sq-in... although somehow I imagine there are minimums and setup fees and such when you're talking about prices that low.

Other people were talking about jewelers making a killing re-plating jewelry, so it's probably something many of them are set up to do.

Maybe I'm over-engineering here, a bare copper wire may well provide sufficient contact over a reasonable period of time. I just know it would never fly in a consumer electronics device, it's guaranteed to corrode during accelerated life testing. (AKA quite likely to fail under normal use in the course of a year or three)

I don't know if you're trying to replicate the MFLB, but I'm pretty sure the mflb has a little glowing heating element behind the mesh the herb sits on. So that it heats the air as you draw it through, rather than directly heating the herb.

This might work if you were to use a finer mesh, maybe, but I don't think it's gonna give you the same results.

Ideally, you want a ceramic heating element rather than a metal one in your vape, they last longer and put off less crap.

Edit: Also, Make sure your connection to your battery is good. If you can find it, you should try to wrap the wire around a metal rod or something just a bit smaller than the battery, and pull it tight with pliers on both sides or whatever. Make a nice smooth ring just a hair smaller than the battery, so that as you are sliding the battery in, it provides a little resistance and makes a nice contact all the way around. Ideally, you want a slightly springy wire, not dead soft.

This will mean you wil lhave to wrap around an even smaller mandrel, because it will unspring some from the size of the mandrel, and you want the resting state to still be a tiny hair smaller than the battery, so that it holds tight all around as you slide the battery in. You can unbend a bit if you bend it too far and still keep a nice circle easier than trying to bend further if you didn't bend far enough.

EDIT2: Ignore the stuff about the glowy thingy, apparently it's just an indicator... hidden inside the device...

Also some dude below was complaining about dude I responded to being downvoted, so I thought an alternative perspective which raises why people might react negatively to the original statement would be relevant.
