SAN Starter Solution by siillymoosein sysadmin

[–]thatguyinss 0 points1 point ago

I have 10 lefthand 4300 and 4500s that all run iSCSI in production.

HP/Lefthand support is shit. I've had it take a week plus to call back on a site down issue.

I've received the case closed notice and the survey on how well they did before the call back, this is not uncommon.

you call in to support and get a nice guy who speaks English and takes the ticket. The call back is from someone named "Jim" who is on a shitty voip connection from the other side of the world and cannot communicate at all. Then they keep asking if they have solved your problem. You finally say yes in hopes that they will close the ticket and you can start a new one and hopefully get a new "Jim".

Support is huge for me, I'm a very small shop. looking back, I regret my decision to go w/ Lefthand based only on the support. If you go with it, start reading the docs and don't waste your money on the support packages.

I've been running these SANs for 4.5 years and will not be purchasing lefthand products in the future.

</my .02>

edit: I forgot to mention that the average wait times earlier this year was 45-60 minutes to get to a support person. They seem to have changed that to the ticket taker then call back model now, but the same hour plus situation exists.

Glass Jars : What to do with them? by thatguyinssin gardening

[–]thatguyinss[S] 1 point2 points ago

hehe, I live in the sticks ... the only glass workers in our area make pipes.

Great Idea though, I'll see what I can do with these on my own, but then see if the school could use them.

How To Build A Stockpile For Only $2.75 A Day (X-post from PostCollapse) by MultiTaskrin SelfSufficiency

Judging just by the photo, you seem to store a great deal of liquid. not that that is bad, i'm just curious.

With soup for example, I tend to store all the components to make my soups on demand. I can store the veggies and spices and stuff much longer; using less space than cans (I also have a well and live by a river so I may be depending on that too much but ...).

agreed: don't drink and sysadmin.

smoke and sysadmin instead, when your high a fuck, you become super careful and don't mind spending the extra time. I always keep a sheet of paper and a dull pencil next to my computer at home for notes!

ah-hem, working from home :D

Your (employer's?) definition of sysadmin? by dermusikmanin sysadmin

[–]thatguyinss 3 points4 points ago

'Information Systems Engineer' Apparently, if electricity is used to power any random device, I'm instantly an expert on said device.

Med size municipality running: Window$ Linux OSx All Cisco stuff Citrix SANs etc and all the crap that goes on our desktops. a couple hundred unique apps on the desktops, and stuff like that.

Here is the important part: I've worked in the NOCs of some of largest "computer companies" around and found that the bigger the org, the tighter the job duties. When you take senior rolls at small to mid size companies, you are going to be 'the IT guy' and deal with everything, for less pay. For example, yesterday I was fighting problems with fail over functions between our three Cisco ASA5520s in the morning, and fixed a HUGE tube based "flat screen" TV that weighed 900#s and an Xbox.

You can't train for that shit, just learn to be resourceful.

How does one calculate how long a 12 volt battery can power a device based on draw? by thatguyinssin askscience

[–]thatguyinss[S] 0 points1 point ago

I think I'm going to scale this back to 125 watt or so and see. I need to use the setups in other posts to re-figure this idea. I agree, this may not be very viable at 50 watt.

As far as propane, I'm not sure how I would use that in this application. I'm trying to run a block heater to keep the truck warm while it's sitting outside at the office all day.

That's a good idea, multiple small batteries.

I'm trying to run an engine block heater. 500w is half of the original, but still a lot. I'm trying to keep the block heater running off of the battery for 8-10 hours or more if possible.

disdain as a verb (first link in Google): Consider to be unworthy of one's consideration.

Sorry to have drug you in here and forced you to read my question, then forced you to spend your time typing your insightful and relevant post.

If this isn't worth your consideration, why do you persist?

I sure hate being stupid, but could you tell me how to convert the draw to amps, if all the information I have is in watts?
