Ha, how does reddit pick the thumbnail, anyway? It picked the worst one in this case!

We'll go past 72 hours if we need to (we will need to), but not for too long. :)

Reddit, we're trying to raise enough money to build a medical clinic in Kenya by putting on an entertaining 72+ hour "Mario & Friends" marathon (2nd day right now). If you're against or don't understand these type of fundraisers, please hear me out in the comments! by t0b4in gaming

100% goes straight to the charity's PayPal account. We pay for the equipment, food, server, and other costs out of our own pockets.

Not quite sure - we're raising the money for a World Youth International project. Might be worth contacting them?

There's always a lot of hate and disapproval in the comment threads when these type of events get posted on reddit. Specifically, a lot of people say that it seems like a justification for something that we might already do, and that it's really not that challenging or difficult -- we're just having fun playing games.

As someone who organises these events and enjoys watching others', here's my point of view: these events are not about torturing ourselves so that WE'RE deserving of donations, but they're about providing an entertaining stream, raising awareness for the charity, and hence stimulating donations for the charity. Who said fundraising isn't allowed to be fun? Would many of the people who donate during these events have known about the particular charities, let alone thought about donating to them if these events didn't exist?

When it comes down to it: these marathons generate interest and awareness, and therefore money, for good causes -- they work exactly as intended.

I personally donated a bit over $10.00, but my real donation is the money spent on games/equipment, and the time spent organising the event. Rather than just directly donating that money to the charity, I use it to organise this event and raise awareness, and in turn more money for the charity.

We're the same group who did a "worst games" marathon a few months ago. Understandable that playing good games might not be as persuasive in terms of donations, but we wanted to play through some different games for our next marathon. That, and we've found that people generally enjoy watching games that they're familiar with over obscure games they've never seen.

Point of these things is to raise awareness and stimulate donations. Would many of the people who have donated even have thought about donating to World Youth International if this marathon wasn't on?

Haha, it happened by accident... it's a piece of fan art one of our viewers sent in, and reddit picked it up as the thumbnail. I think it's kind of eye-catching! :P

The goal is to provide entertainment, or something that people will really enjoy watching, and will share with their friends, spread on the Internet, etc. It may not be particularly difficult for us, and it might be something we do anyway, but why not try and raise some money for a good cause?

When it comes down to it: the marathon is generating interest and awareness, and therefore money, for the charity -- it's working exactly as intended.

The thumbnail is a piece of fan art from one of our viewers. Didn't expect that to happen, but hey, it worked out perfectly!
