Doing upgrades to an old 1993 GT Avalanche by goodcasein MTB

[–]syngltrkmnd 2 points3 points ago

Yup. There are BOATLOADS of posts here from over the years squabbling over the merits (and lack thereof) to upgrading such an antique.

I strongly vote against. New school trail whips are designed for 4-5" travel forks, and this bike wasn't ever designed for that EVEN IF the head tube could accommodate the fork. Forget it, and save up for a 21st Century dream machine.

A bike of that age probably has a 1" steerer and therefore modern forks won't fit. Regardless, I recommend saving up for a modern bike that can accommodate suspension. Any decent fork you buy is going to be far more valuable than the rest of the bike.

I'd advise against it. Join a local club, find friends!

What is the most computer illiterate thing you've witnessed? by Peppe22in AskReddit

[–]syngltrkmnd 0 points1 point ago

I work in healthcare and was talking to someone who called our office for information today. I asked if she had visited our lab's website, to which she said 'no.' I asked if she was at a web browser and she said yes. I dictated our lab's URL to her, and in an attempt to be helpful offered "While you're here, why don't you press CTRL+D so you can bookmark the page."

"Oooh, I don't know," she said. "I don't like to bookmark things."

"May... I... ask why?" I inquired, cringing at the idea of what kind of answer might be generated.

"I don't like to add things to this computer" was her response.

Facepalm.

This is my dream for the way it would work. I have been saying for years that I'd be willing to pay for cable if it were available a la carte. Voting with dollars is the real democracy in entertainment.

Lemme buy episodes onesy-twosey, or I'll pay for a season of a drama, a sports team, or cycling event. Flame away, but this is what keeps me from being a cable TV subscriber.

I see it as a really good Apple TV (set) interface. Paging through TV schedules/movie files, previewing, opening IMDB, or a streaming system like Netflix, etc. Forget looking down at a little screen to navigate a bigger one...

I might have a chance at a first-person shooter game now, as well... :)

"Manufacturing Should Not Destroy In Order to Create" - a look at Chris King (pinkbike) by syngltrkmndin MTB

[–]syngltrkmnd[S] 0 points1 point ago

I sort of agree with you.

One aside, first: I am surprised this article did not focus more on drop-in headsets for oversized applications, or their hubs, or all of the gorgeous tools they make.

When I decommissioned my Trek 8500 race bike for commuting purposes, I popped out the King headset simply as a theft prevention measure. I got a $30 aheadset at the parts counter where I worked and even the manager asked "why would you run that garbage?" Nine years later, it still works fine. However, if I gave a moments' notice to the working conditions of the factory workers for the cheapo part, I'd probably cringe. But who knows.
If I ever get another race bike with the 1 1/8" head tube, the King is going back into service.

Three cheers for fair labor, beautiful parts, and American bike companies.

Peak Zone has not been opened yet, but I expect it will be natural terrain, for advanced riders.

Have you ever ridden the bike park? What areas have you ridden?

Whistler is truly the best place on earth. I am glad I live so close (Seattle) as I make a few trips a year.

I recommend picking up trail maps from any of the multitude of shops you have there in the village, and hit up as much as you can! There are hundreds of kms of trails in the valley area, plus Pemby and Squampton.

I nearly always ride park when I come to Whistler but I did Thrill Me Kill Me last summer with a huge pack of friends and had a blast. I have ridden a few trails in Pemby (names unknown) plus a few down south in Squamish. Deliverman, City Boy, Half Nelson, 19th Hole, and a few others. So awesome. (One of the best things I saw last year was two girls pedaling up from uni to the base of Half Nelson on XC whips asking where the drop-in was. We were all on long-travel bikes. And awestruck. Canadian women are rad.)

Style for miles. Scrubbing, on the other hand, is functional. It gets you back on the ground faster, instead of spending time in the air.
