The U.S....run a bank? Have you seem our balance sheets? Giving the banks to the government is not a good idea. Personally, I think local credit unions, run like co-ops are the solution. That way, at least the people own the banks.

Here's the deal: He certainly isn't wearing his religion on his sleeve. As a matter of fact, I can't remember him ever mentioning god unless someone asked him. I really don't see him doing anything drastic as far as his religion goes when he gets in office.

Here's what I see him actually doing: Getting corporate CEOs off of the White House staff. Getting our troops out of Iraq, Afghanistan and pretty much everywhere else. And most importantly, I am 100% certain that when the patriot act comes up for re-approval, he will veto that shit. I see prison pardons for non-violent drug offenders. I see a huge reduction in the TSA and homeland security, as well as the CIA and FBI. And yes, end end to cannabis enforcement.

The only part of his shit that worries me is that he may do away with some regulations before eliminating the corruption, and that seems like a recipe for disaster. He doesn't have my full support, but as far as the GOP field goes, he's pretty fucking golden. Whether or not he should be president is a debate I'd like to see on the media, so at least for the primary, I will throw my support behind him.

Has anyone else never actually believed in God? by imallinman95in atheism

[–]swedgin 0 points1 point ago

Sort of. When I was a kid I was raised non-religious, my parent's aren't atheists, or agnostics, or theists, they are what I'll call apathetists, they just don't care. They never really talked about god. I never had any concept of god until I was a teenager. I was a rebellious kid, drugs were my best friend, mostly pot. Anyway, I got busted when I was a teenager, and locked in a in-patient treatment program where my mushy teenage mind was easily convinced that I had a horrible cannabis addiction, after my release, I was introduced to the wonderful world of court ordered AA meetings.

While I don't remember anyone actually pushing me towards Christianity, I definitely had to believe in a higher power. I remember being told that it didn't have to be "God", it could be my family, friends or even a rock. Yes a rock, how fucking condescending is that. A rock is supposedly a higher power than myself. Anyway, I disregarded the rock, hated my parents, and my friends all smoked pot, so I figured I'd give the whole Jesus thing a whirl. After all, if I didn't find help, cannabis would surely rip my life apart. The fact that I still wanted to smoke pot was all the convincing I needed that I was addicted. (apparently I'm addicted to Tacos and Kayaking as well, who knew?)

If you asked me then, I would have told you I was a christian. I would have told you I believed in god. I would have told you I talk to him every day. I would have told you whatever I needed to in order to convince myself that God was not only real, but that I actually had a relationship with him. All of these other people I had recently met, all of these people, who compared to my old friends seemed to have their shit together, all believed in this stuff. If I just pretended a little longer, maybe I would see what I was missing. I tried so hard to believe, but you know what, God wasn't there. Not once. For a while, I was hurt, like god was rejecting me as revenge for all the years I rejected him.

Anyway fast forward a few years to a few years ago, I eventually let myself doubt, I started asking questions. Questions to my counselors, my youth group, my pastor, my parents. You know what though, I never got one answer. Some people told me they feel the same way I did. Some told me I needed to pray more and read my bible. A combination of reading my bible, r/atheism, and some Dawkins eventually led me down the right path. I finally started asking the right questions, and came to the right conclusions.

God never answered, because he doesn't exist. I didn't need help managing my pot addiction, because pot is not addictive. I ditched all my new AA friends, like I ditched my high-school friends.

TL;DR No, but I really really tried.

Can anyone offer advice? Teenage cousin speaks directly to god.... by untrue_in atheism

[–]swedgin 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you can trap him if he's willing to ask some questions to god. Act like you really want to know what god thinks. Start with few basic questions: "why did god make Hitler so evil", "Is it really wrong to be gay", you know, lowball questions that anyone can come up with a bullshit answer for, then comes the snare. Ask him something that isn't true, something that he wouldn't know isn't true like: "Why was I only born with only one testicle?". After he tells you it was a test of faith, and you're failing, or that it was going to be cancerous so he left it out, or something like that; Whip out both of your nuts, and ask him why god can't seem to count.

There was recently a shitstorm in certain circles because he said heaven is a "fairy story". I have a feeling this is in response to that.

I'm not really sure why anyone would be surprised to find out Hawking is an atheist though, considering he has made his views on the creation of the universe very clear. Spelled it out even, in that book right there.

It's always fun to point out that our nation was founded on grecian/roman principles. The very same romans who supposedly killed Jesus.

I'm an atheist who is puzzled by the typical interpretation of the Garden of Eden story. Can someone here clarify? by emr1028in Christianity

What makes you think it is a poem? The story is thousands of years old. At the time, it was the best explanation they could come up with for where this all came from. It doesn't read like a poem. What it reads like is an account of creation by ill-informed bronze age men... Which isn't surprising since that's exactly what it is. The only thing about the story that might make one think it is a poem is the fact that it clearly isn't true. If you presuppose that the bible is true, then it must be metaphore. My problem with the bible is that the amount of these "metaphores" severely challenges that presupposition, and that noone else seems to see that.

But in all seriousness, why did god create the tree in the first place. Or the snake?

Right, pot is way less dangerous than lots of stuff everyone has laying around. That scissors you left on the counter can do a lot more damage than a handful of pot-candies would ever be capable of. Just look around your house, you really have no idea. See that lamp? That bookshelf? Kids will pull that shit down right on top of them. Look around again, the TV, the stereo, all that shit could seriously fuck up your kid. Don't even get me started on the kitchen....

Anyway, yeah, just keep dangerous shit away from your kids, and bolt everything else down, it's really not that hard.

Gedit is good, as josefnpat mentioned. Also good for Windows only though, is notepad++. It's got more tab/spacing/formatting/highlighting/color settings than you're going to need. The defaults are fine, but everything is customizable, including tabs. Also regEx in the search makes replacing all tabs at the beginning of a line, with 2 spaces, or vise/versa a breeze.
