Haha, I googled 'indoor fishing pool in Sangenjaya' to try to find some info on it, but I was disappointed you couldn't keep the fish to eat. But my searching led me to the Zauo restaurant chain - the gimmick is you fish for your own meal and they prepare it fresh for you. Thought it'd be fun to try out, anyone done it before? Is it superly pricey?

Flight to Japan by aMEHzingin japan

[–]superiorolive 0 points1 point ago

I'm leaving next week, booked my ticket about a month and a half ago through kayak.com (it's a good aggregator, I always found the lowest prices on that site). Flying in from canada end of may, flying out end of august. $1350 round.

Stupid question involving liquor. by superiorolivein japan

I know I'm being overly paranoid, but it's going to be my first time in Japan (actually my first time traveling alone, so far from my tiny hometown) so I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.

Even though I'm 'allergic' I do like to have a drink or two in a social setting! I don't break out in hives, it just means I have quite a low tolerance!

I'm actually asian (which is .. probably why I have that gene :P) so I fear, to strangers at least, I'm probably going to come off as rude instead of 'weird confused gaijin'.

Thanks for the suggestions! (although I did try a chocolate mudslide once and didn't like it for some reason even though I don't mind milk shrug).

I'm a girl, so yeah I don't have to worry about teasing :) Cocktails being cheaper than beers is awesome! It's usually the other way around in the west.

Job searching in the city (advice)? by TheEleventhDoctorin halifax

[–]superiorolive 0 points1 point ago

Aw man, that sucks then, it sounds like you are doing everything right :/ (...maybe double check again to make sure you have the right phone number on there haha).

Not too familiar with Psychology jobs, but yeah I know funding has been cut in recent years. Graduated from Dal with Biology and Neuro last year, did co-op which looking back was the best decision I made - but I definitely remember it being easier to get a job in the earlier years when compared to later. If you're interested in something related to Pysch maybe try cold-emailing profs and seeing if they have any summer positions open (or any that extend throughout the school year). Maybe even a prof at SMU you would be interested in doing your Honours with? You mentioned you had a lot of volunteer experience as well, try to contact them and see if they have any paying jobs?

Good luck!

Edit: Check the hospital as well, I remember a couple of my friends working as porters in the summer and part-time and they got paid quite well (something like $15/hr). Not for the feint of heart though, you'll be transporting body parts and fluids around the hospital.

Is there a reason why this guesthouse is so cheap? Too good to be true? by superiorolivein japan

[–]superiorolive[S] 0 points1 point ago*

I'm only going for three months, and I haven't been in Tokyo before, so all I've seen is the foreigners short-term stay prices online - usually for a private room it's about 50kyen, with 8k utilities, and something like a 20k 'management fee', and an additional deposit that may or may not be refundable, so in comparison this looked pretty good, but again I have no experience with this. Am I looking in the wrong places? Any tips on finding anywhere that has a private room with shared facilities for a comparable or cheaper price?

Edit: And it's probably naive of me, but I was hoping to get someplace in Western Tokyo because of the potential, not-guaranteed job. The job location is out in Hachioji and Tama, which is still pretty far from this guesthouse but (according to google maps) half the price than if I was commuting in from downtown Tokyo.

BSc in what? It's already a bit too late for summer jobs but the dalhousie career centre usually posts lab related term jobs for the summer. Check out indeed.com as well.

HOWEVER if you really are applying for five jobs/day and not getting any calls for interviews, I feel like there must be something wrong with your cover letter or resume. You tailor each cover letter and resume to the job, right? Made sure your contact info is on them?

Actually, that link is super reasonable! The ones that I were bringing up were like 8200 for 2 hours kinda thing. The membership option is fantastic as well, thank you!

[–]superiorolive[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's true, I was hoping that some of the clubs would run through the summer though (at least a couple of them do that in Canada), but it doesn't sound like we'll be around the same area at the same time you're right :(
