Hey /r/India, what are your favorite books? by one_brown_jediin india

[–]sunnydelish 2 points3 points ago

American Gods and Anansi boys are good books - but IMHO not genre bending at all. There is something about gaiman that I don't like. Cory Doctorow writes in a similar fashion (Someone comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town), but is a lot easier to read and enjoy.

I feel Gaiman uses juxtaposition of internal conflicts of his protagonists and contrasts them dramatically with what is going on around them - leading to a predictable resolution towards the end of the book. He is a good story teller, do not get me wrong. Just never got too into him (well, I've read almost all books by him, and Good Omens is currently on my iPhone as an audiobook - but thats thanks to Terry Pratchett).

OMG - House of Leaves. Its one of my favorites - it took me two tries to finish it. The first one time I got really creeped out (Resident Advisor during the winter break at college - hardly a soul around), and I felt that there were things in the periphery of my vision that when I looked around really were not there.

Favorite books? hmmmn. let me see - Anathem and Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire ( all 5, but ASOS is probably my favorite).

No Country for Old Men - Cormac McCarthy (really difficult to read, but boy is it good)

House of Leaves - Mark Danielewski (creepy as fuck)

The Alchemist - Paolo Coelho ( re-read it about 10 times so far - means something different to me every time I read it)

I just finished Job's Biography last night. I highly recommend it.

"We are all made of stars", questions for an astronomer or astrophysicist by sunnydelishin askscience

[–]sunnydelish[S] 0 points1 point ago

How would having high metallicity effect the temperature and EM spectrum of the star? If it has heavier elements, would it "burn" hotter? Would most of the energy be emitted as Infra-red radiation or would it get skewed towards the other extreme of the EM spectrum?

Could you tell me what the stellar radiation of a star with more metallicity than our sun be like ?

Also, would heavier metallicty lead to binary star systems?

Thanks for the answers! I have some more questions, but these will overlap a bit with exobiology.

If a star system has more "metallicity" - does that mean that the whole system will have a higher chance of having organic life ? (given that C,N,O,Ca are heavier than H and He) And by corollary, will a younger star system than our solar system, with more metallicity be more prone to having life?

Here is what I am thinking, Earth took about 4.5 billion year to form, with organic life originating in the last billion years or so (prokaryotes). Is there a chance that a star system which is younger, but has a higher concentration of organic elements, could come up with life faster than us (less than 3.4 billion years)?

Bryant and Summer Street are not bad. Look for something on Richmond too.

Also, go to artvoice's rentals sections - houses fill-up pretty quickly during the summer, earlier you call cheaper the rates.

Also, what grad school? If it is UB North - you will need a car unless you live on campus. If it is UB South there are some houses in walking distance in some shady neighborhoods. Just remember - Buffalo does not have the greatest public transportation system, so you will need a car, and gas being expensive, you wil need to factor in proximity to your rental equation.

If you need any more help, PM me.

Also Viv sounds like a cement mixer with gravel in it, very rich baritone. My wife actually came to see what I was watching when she heard the man speak.

Who here watches IPL? Which team do you think will win this years trophy? by BollywoodGuruLivein Cricket

[–]sunnydelish 0 points1 point ago

Delhi Daredevils. Coz I'm from Delhi. And they have always like a good side, but never delivered. This year their top order is probably one of the most potent in the IPL. The wife supports Rajasthan Royals, since before season 1 started. But my second favorite franchise is Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Although I love our man Gusset, specifically hate CSK. Fucking Yankees of the IPL. Owner is also President of the Board, and not a nice man. Fuck that shit.

And Mr. Tendulkar and Mumbai Indians - cannot see what the hype is. Rules bent left and right for them, and now with that clown Harbhajan captaining. Petulant Boy, needs to grow up.

I know I am risking downvotes by being blunt, but if you downvote me, tell me why? It is okay to disagree. But give me your point of view.

Are there any Ents here? by trish00lin india

[–]sunnydelish 2 points3 points ago

Ent is a derivation. It refers to Tolkien's tree herders. In the US trees is also slang for weed. Hence, pot smokers, pseudonymously, are known as ents.

In the US, 420 is the police code for drug usage. In india "dafa" 420 (IPC article 420) refers to cheating and fraud hence the confusion.
