Conan O'Brien references Phish, while talking to Dave Letterman about littleleague baseball (@ 8:21) by Brostashin phish

[–]sspott 0 points1 point ago

I know folks who sat next to Conan O'Brian at the Widespread Panic shows at the Warfield back in 2001, apparently he's a long standing Phish / WSP fan.

A bunch of photos from "Old School Phish Tapers" by Kernel_Forbinin phish

[–]sspott 0 points1 point ago

I think the majority of these are Red Rocks from 95/96, while not exactly 'Old School', seeing these certainly brings back memories.

Granted; after the nostalgia settles, I get frustrated seeing all those rigs (25+) and then calculate the amount of circulating sources...

To think of all the DAT's that are stuffed in closets; having never seen the light of day is just sad.

Good butchers in the Norwalk/Stamford area? by DiscountPoniesin Connecticut

[–]sspott 0 points1 point ago

While it's not even remotely close to Norwalk / Stamford, it's worth mentioning Cliff's Meats in Essex, CT.

As someone who spent a few years in deepest, darkest Alabama during my undergraduate days (Roll Tide), BBQ became more of a lifestyle choice than a meal, Cliff's Meats is hands down; bar none, the best butcher shop I've found in Connecticut.

I can't begin to say enough positive things about this podcast; hell, it got me listening to Phish again after ten years.

Audio Society of Minnesota 2012 Speaker Cable Listening Test by sspottin audiophile

[–]sspott[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure folks on here have some opinions on cables, the only thing that this article is missing is the inclusion of DIY cables in the mix.

"Before this test 69% of our test subjects thought that speaker cables could make a significant difference. After this test, 86% believe that speaker cables can make significant differences."

Phish Junta high quality tracks available! 192kHz/24bit FLAC by crimson117in audiophile

[–]sspott 1 point2 points ago

Kudos again to Phish for making the effort to release the high resolution material; even the 'haters' that don't care for the musical content have to agree that it's impressive that Phish offers (in addition to this album) 24bit DSBD FLAC's for each live show via livephish.com, but of course 'haters gotta hate'.

New Haven Folk Singer/Songwriter Finds an Audience on Google+ by lonseidmanin Connecticut

Google+ really gets a bad wrap; it's an extraordinarily powerful platform, but the real question is how long till live concerts via Google Hangout?

Heh, ironically this McIntosh is replacing a Marantz 2 Channel.

Not the slightest clue; this is is my first solid state amplifier (worth modifying), I figured it would be a good idea to use it for a while to understand the OEM sound, then start investigating a logical upgrade path, any suggestions?

Again; this wasn't exactly a premeditated purchase, my wife and I bought a house a while back, and we've been taking considerable advantage of the auction houses in the region to get the place furnished.

Well; after tagging along to these things for nearly a year, I finally came across some stuff I was interested in, namely a McIntosh C24 Pre Amp (Solid State), but after that hit the block it was almost immediately at $500 and while I was interested (I wasn't $500 interested), then the MC 250 went up and I got it for $450, which (after a few searches) seems to be about market value, I'm well aware that I didn't get a bargain, but the thing was beautiful and I (admittedly) got caught up in the whole auction hoopla.

Out of curiosity, what are you asking for it, I got this one somewhat on a whim, but I'm kinda digging the thought of running two of them as monoblocks. I picked up this one at a local antique auction in Connecticut.

Yup, looks like it's 50x2 and can be bridged to run as a monoblock [100x1].

The temperature issue is apparently pretty common; I've seen a few fixes, but I like this one since it runs the fan as part of a daemon.

Define gParted Partition with Root Permissions? by sspottin linux4noobs

[–]sspott[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the reply;

Weird, I'll have to try running gParted again, as there is no other OS on the machine?

sda1: OS X Lion Recovery Partition (native)

sda2: Linux-Swap (created by gParted)

sda3: Linux ext4 (created by gParted)

There's no EFI firmware password, nor active Mac OS on the machine. Am I better off using the Linux Mint 'Disk Utility' instead of gParted?

Or perhaps using a stand alone bootable CD of gParted?

[–]sspott 0 points1 point ago

Why don't you try using UnetBootin' to make a bookable USB stick from the working Macbook Pro to use in combination with the Live CD?

Some people have reported that Debian distributions require you to use both sources on Macbook Pro installations, weird but true.

Hmm... Are you even getting a boot screen from the Ubuntu disc (where it gives you a few options to select the type of boot sequence)?

I've been dabbling in a Macbook Pro Linux install this week myself. The Ubuntu help pages are a huge resource for all sorts of information, have you checked them out yet?

Has anyone delved into Voyage MPD (Audiophile Linux)? by sspottin audiophile

[–]sspott[S] 0 points1 point ago

Since my primary machine took a tumble last week and is spending the next 7 to 10 days at the Apple Spa, I figured that I would make the most of it and take an older Macbook Pro (2008) and setup Voyage MPD.

My Linux chops are considerably rusty, but I was thinking about running Linux Mint 12 (Debian) x64 and installing the MPD daemon, has anyone else used the MPD for a dedicated audio server?
