IWTL how to control my anger by pathetichumanin IWantToLearn

[–]squidgirl 2 points3 points ago

When a house is on fire, you don't start looking for who started it.... You put the fire out first. Paraphrased from Thich Nhat Hanh. In other words, look within to cool the flames of anger, and get in touch with that feeling. Take care of it, because it is a part of you.

Thich Nhat Hanh says it pretty well here: 10 verses to tame anger

His books "taming the tiger within" and "peace is every step" are soothing to read. Many people here suggest meditation, it is a good placeto start!

The last time I went no poo my hair completely dried out. Did anybody have similar experiences? by TheMentoManin NoPoo

[–]squidgirl 0 points1 point ago

Try other oils, like jojoba or almond... vegetable glycerine might also help on the ends. Use a chamomile tea or aloe juice rinse(aloe with no sugar added). Shikakai is another great herb for nourishing hair, Dr. Bronner's has a nice rinse you could try.

Best of luck!

Such a pretty cat! Aww, put a bowl of water on the bathroom counter there! Most cats hate drinking water next to their food and wind up dehydrated. Once I put a bowl by the bathroom sink my cat drank a lot more and stopped begging or drinking from the bathtub. :)

First meditation, failed miserably by DragonSoul07in Meditation

[–]squidgirl 2 points3 points ago

I once went to a meditation workshop where the instructor talked about counting breath and suggested restarting the count every time your mind wanders. He joked that you may end up repeating the number one many times! This is OK because it means you are noticing what is happening in your head, a success in itself!

How do yall feel about baby poo? by cornfloweredin NoPoo

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago

You can look up your baby shampoo here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

Looks like the worst of it may be any added fragrances, sulfates, etc. I would advise either you try doing water only washes, or trying regular no poo by doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar rinses. The vinegar is good especially if you have hard water. You could also try a shampoo bar, that is just soap and essential oils and herbs (followed by a diluted vinegar rinse)

Check out some of the links on the side bar for more info. Tea and herb rinses are also quite lovely, and it is good to become familiar with various essential oils too. :)

How are Social Security Benefits calculated exactly? by TheBishop7in personalfinance

[–]squidgirl 3 points4 points ago

The Retirement Estimator gives estimates based on your actual Social Security earnings record. Please keep in mind that these are just estimates. We can’t provide your actual benefit amount until you apply for benefits. And that amount may differ from the estimates provided because:

Your earnings may increase or decrease in the future. After you start receiving benefits, they will be adjusted for cost-of-living increases. Your estimated benefits are based on current law.

The law governing benefit amounts may change because, by 2036, the payroll taxes collected will be enough to pay only about 77 percent of scheduled benefits. Your benefit amount may be affected by military service, railroad employment or pensions earned through work on which you did not pay Social Security tax.

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator/

And you can't use the "estimator" until you are the right age or eligible to start receiving benefits. Yup. ಠ_ಠ

Ever been put under anesthesia? What you're describing reminds me so much of the time I was put under for an endoscopy.... It felt like the lights in the stadium going out.... in my brain. My last thoughts were peaceful but later I realized how much like death it might be like. I even had a nightmare about it once. Kind of terrifying.

I can't drink caffeine anymore help me for the love of. by DiscoRacein tea

[–]squidgirl 0 points1 point ago

Raspberry leaf tea has a rich flavor similar to black tea. Caffeine free, don't know about the acidity though. White tea is really low caffeine. Try marshmallow tea, peppermint, chamomile, ginger or licorice(with tulsi!) to soothe your stomach.

Very itchy scalp and lots of dandruff after two weeks of not washing my hair at all. Help? by anyone-but-mein NoPoo

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago

You could probably make your own "dandruff tea" rinse if you bought the herbs and brewed the tea yourself:

Ingredients: Organic Burdock; Organic Rosemary; Organic Thyme; Organic Nettle; Organic Chamomile; Organic Green Tea; Organic Lavender Buds; Organic Peppermint Source here

You can get many of these ingredients at a health food store or supermarket, and some come in essential oil form.

Very itchy scalp and lots of dandruff after two weeks of not washing my hair at all. Help? by anyone-but-mein NoPoo

[–]squidgirl 2 points3 points ago

For itchy scalp there are a lot of things you could experiment with that could help immensely!

There are a lot of posts on the LJ no poo community specific to "water only" and I skimmed quickly and found some people with similar routines to yours (I've never tried water only for very long... the longest I've gone is 4-5 days, but I did "wash" with water and once with diluted ACV, which extended the time I could go without washing)

Here's a linke to the tagged posts on LJ so you can see what people with experience have to say.

Try doing water-only washes at least 1-2 times a week. Try using a very diluted baking soda rinse or ACV rinse every once in a while to see if it helps, as you might have some dry/dead skin cells (causing the itchiness) that need to be stripped gently. If you have hard water (most people do), you might have mineral build up that is causing itchiness.

Look into using a "shampoo bar" which is basically just mild soap with a lot of essential oils... some people use them about once a month, and it won't leave much build up on your scalp if you rinse with ACV. Try chagrin valley or mehandi shampoo bars.

Research carrier oils and essential oils. Before shampoo and soap exited, people used to use oils and essential oils on their hair/scalp. Some good carrier oils are: jojoba, almond, and coconut. Rub directly onto the scalp after washing, along with a few drops of essential oil of your choice - tea tree oil, lavender, rosemary, etc. Start with small amounts!

Oils should help quite a bit! You could also try making a tea rinse with chamomile tea (brew it overnight, use it in the morning, very soothing!) Buy 100% aloe juice and apply to your scalp with a squirt bottle, also very soothing.

Hope this helps!

Eights by Free_Injectionsin Enneagram

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago*

Eights can sometimes be so obvious (since they are reactive/assertive types), it's hard not to type them after five minutes of conversing! Try looking at some of the lists of famous type eights and see if you can think of people that might be that type.

I like this website because of the visual collage they created for each type, here's eight: http://www.enneagram.net/type8.html

If you look at type eight on this website: ocean moonshine, you'll find a section called "mistypes", or types that are commonly confused with type 8.

Also, when typing, look at the triads to help deduce what type a person is source: 9types for more detail:

  • : BASE MOTIVATION: fear/mental 567 : anger/instinctual 891 : self/internal image/emotional 234

  • : OBSESSION/coping style : performance/competence 135 : honesty/reactive 468 : projected/exterior image/positive 792

  • : FOCUS/social style : internal reflection/withdrawn 459 : people/society/compliant 126 : power/assertive 378

  • : OBJECT RELATIONS/hierarchical needs : control 258 : mediate/harmony 369 : reduce/ideals 147

From this can you deduce that an 8 will present with anger-instinct/honesty-reactivity/power-assertiveness/control as their preferred or habitual orientations. By process of elimination, you can type someone a lot faster. Also keep in mind, that in order to type someone, you have to try to think of what they are like at their worst(negative direction). Many types can look the same when they are at their best. (*EDIT for formatting text)

U.S. ‘pink slime’ factories shut down amid outcry by nononoluciferiansin Health

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago

Yep. And beef naturally has ammonia in it anyway. The ammonia treatment increases the pH. The alternative is a much higher rate if e.coli and salmonella.

While we're at it, don't forget about all the antibiotics in there too!

U.S. ‘pink slime’ factories shut down amid outcry by nononoluciferiansin Health

[–]squidgirl 3 points4 points ago

You think the only meat treated with ammonia or chemicals is pink slime? All ground beef is required to be treated with ammonia. Unless the supermarket grinds it from intact cuts, in which case the chance of e.coli and salmonella are riskier. I mostly avoid beef anyway, so really just curious.

Just some food for thought... Huffington post article

You might want to start avoiding chicken too until you find out what its been treated with before it gets to your supermarket. The USDA recommends that chicken carcasses be rinsed in chlorine and a bunch if other chemicals to prevent salmonella:

Heres the USDA's very own power poinr about it:

Yup. Guess its time to think about going vegetarian. Sadly I'm not being sarcastic...

Personal development plan/suggestions for an Enneagram type five by kvm919in Enneagram

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago*

Two books you may want to look at: "enneagram made easy" and "the happy introvert"(EDIT:can feel a little basic if you already know MBTI, but still a good read) by Elizabeth Wagele. She has a humorous and gentle approach to personal growth.

Here's a little bit from the type 5 section:

Positive things to say to yourself (as a 5)

-"Interaction and experience are necessary for real understanding"

-"I will experience being an individual fully when I empty myself of my preconceived ideas and categories"

-"I don't have to be the smartest person"

Also, some suggestions on going to 8:

Don't avoid conflict

State your opinions, and take a stand (emulate others you know who are not afraid to put their foot in their mouth)

Looks like you've realized the wake up call of type 5: "Awareness of withdrawing from reality into concepts and mental worlds—so that they can rise to a profound and objective understanding of how reality really is."

I don't know how much you've poked around the enneagram website, but there is a personal growth section for each type with a few recommendations: http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/5growth.asp

Advice from my own personal 5(my husband) is to find ways to get yourself out there to meet with perhaps only one person at a time, even if it is at your house. Slowly expand from hanging out with one person to a small group, etc... join a meet up group that shares an interest that stimulates your intellect... or even better, get your body involved (take up a sport or dancing! or learn sign language!). His other advice... was to "get a girlfriend"... and he said it in all sincerity, in that a girl or boyfriend, or even a friend that is more extroverted could help you get out of the house and be more social. (I usually do most of the planning for my husband and I to go out with friends... which he enjoys, otherwise he would be very happy to sit at home and do his own thing)

I would like to a list of movies that are based around Deaf Culture or just deaf people in general. Anyone have good suggestions? by zacciin deaf

[–]squidgirl 1 point2 points ago

It's not a movie, but there is a Star Trek TNG episode (on netflix) called "Loud as a Whisper" with a deaf actor. Season 2, episode 5.

Waxy hair after washing in hard water from soft water by londontimein NoPoo

[–]squidgirl 0 points1 point ago

I've only tried a few of the shampoo bars there. One with aloe and another one with rosemary. Both are really good and didn't dry my hair out at all (I also use jojoba and rosemary/tea tree on my scalp). I think they may still do sample orders, if you wanted to order some sample pieces and try a few different ones.

Also there are various herbs and such that can help with clarifying... check out the links on the side bar or here, or look at the ingredients in this hair rinse.

[–]squidgirl 0 points1 point ago

Ugh, that sounds really annoying to deal with!

You can actually use distilled water, that comes in gallon containers or boiled water to wash your hair with. It won't remove all the impurities, but it can help.

You could try increasing the amount of vinegar in your vinegar rinse... or try lemon juice (increased as well).

Have you tried using corn starch (powder) to reduce the greasyness? It might help a little.
