do any of you guys have careers that are dependent on your mac? by braincircuitboardin apple

[–]spdorsey 0 points1 point ago

I am a media designer, and I'd probably go into construction or something if Macs ceased to exist. Windows is such an inferior alternative that my work would no longer be enjoyable. I love macs for their effortless engineering and their style. I have not seen a Win box that can do that for me.

Mack in the pre-Jobs era, I was considering jumping to SGI if Apple folded. Thankfully, I was spared that decision.

Please cite your claim. I'd love to hear what they have to say.

The only thing wrong with the current 12-core (I have one) is that it does not have Thunderbolt.

...and the new procs.

Naw.

We don't feel that Apple owes us anything, but we would like an update. Either that, or confirmation that the Mac Pro is dead. Either way is fine.

I love my Mac. I make more money on a Mac than I would in Windows even though the apps are the same (mostly). It's the way the OS is built. I just work faster. I also like it more from an attractiveness standpoint.

You're on. I'm one of those dinguses, and I'd never claim to influence any of Apple's nutty, secretive practices. I just want a new Mac.

Why the FUCK does the bank have to hold my money for 7 days before I get it when they are oh so quick to take it when they say it's theirs? by spdorseyin AskReddit

[–]spdorsey[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to annoy you further, but I disagree.

I think it's closed-minded to look at the situation the way it is (flawed and slow) and say "well, that's the way it is, no room for improvement there!". This is what I saw repeatedly from Morgue.

I was trying (again and again) to explain that I believe there could be a way to double-verify a check electronically. That is to say, the receiving bank gets the check, scans it, and the info on the check (routing, account numbers) are used to verify that a check for that amount has been authorized by the issuer's account. It would change the way checks are processed, but it would greatly speed up the system, and it would be cheaper in the long run.

but all I got was answers like "you have no idea what you're talking about", and "I don't need to read any more of your ridiculous ideas".

...talk about a closed mind!

He/She wasn't even open to discussion about a solution. They just wanted to tell me no, and move on.

Thanks for the concise and detailed answer. You, sir, significantly rock.

2 questions:

1) Are you saying that I could have gone into the bank (I did deposit it in person) and specifically say "I have a Reg CC deposit" and they would have processed it faster?

2) You stated the fed "allows banks to place "exception holds" on checks in amounts greater than $5,000 if they doubt the collectability of the check."

It seems that my bank automatically doubts the collectability of my check because they put the hold on it automatically. Is it normal? for this to happen automatically?

I'd think that, in cases like this one, it would be easy to verify the transaction with the issuing bank and speed up the procedure.

You're going to concede that quickly?

Why does a double-ended authorization procedure not have merit in BANKING!?!?!?

What the hell is so alien about making sure that a transaction has been authorized by the issuer? IS that so outlandish that it MUST TAKE A FUCKING WEEK?!?!?!

You're being obtuse, and that makes me sad.

That's fair.

If Amazon can operate, then banks can too. I know it's a different playing field, but that doesn't make it impossible.

I upvoted that comment. It has merit.

I agree that no system is impenetrable, but I do think that a secure system could be built. At least, secure enough. I really do.

I'm thinking I have a lot more faith in net administration than you.

Yes you CAN!!!

EVERY check is REQUIRED to have a routing number, an account number, and an amount. If it does not have these things, then it is not a check.

That's all a banking institution would need to verify, with the bank the account was drawn from, that the funds are in place and available to be transferred. What else is the bank doing for seven days? Verifying that a check has a watermark? Making sure that the kittens are printed correctly on the front?

Step 1 - Receiving bank gets deposited check. It is scanned and entered into the system.

Step 2 - Issuing bank is contacted electronically to verify that funds are available from the account, and that the requested transaction has been authorized.

Step 3 - Money is transferred.

This would not be cheap to implement, but it would be a helluva lot faster and would benefit everyone involved (probably).

Actually, it probably would be cheap to implement compared to what the banks are spending on ten-key operators and giant UV machines. But who knows, right?

Encrypt. Create a separate network for banks (similar to the University system's Internet2). Log and archive all check images and transactions.

This could be figured out easily, and implemented for a minimal cost if you consider the money and time it would save. Well, time, anyway. I think the banks are making a lot of money off of the system that is in place.

I'm not arguing that it is efficient. I believe you that it is not. I believe you that the system is bloated, filled with tenkey operators, and boring as fuck.

What I'm saying is that it can be automated, and that it is not.

I can't believe that you are telling me that the system cannot work faster. It can. It doesn't, but it totally can.

[–]spdorsey[S] 0 points1 point ago

I agree.

But machines are automated. They want to be efficient unless there is an advantage to staying inefficient. This is my point.

I believe that they could make this happen quickly. They choose not to for profit.
