Medical professionals of reddit, what is the biggest ethical dilemma you have encountered? by casaquesoin AskReddit

[–]sorryaboutthatbro 0 points1 point ago

There are rarely ethical dilemmas for me. I feel very strongly bound by the law and my code of professionalism. I think there are situations in which I wish there was something I could do differently, but rarely is there an actual dilemma.

When I was younger I was being prepped for surgery when the nurses informed me they had to shave my pubes. It was the first time that area was ever shaved and it was by a group of 4 nurses. What strange hospital experiences have you encountered? Potentially [NSFW] by Windowarriorin AskReddit

Plus, you lube a catheter (obviously). When it is lubricated, it should slide into a urethra relatively easily (barring other circumstances like BPH or scar tissue). Try putting a cath in a woman sometime. Much more difficult.

I don't think I know any nurse who hasn't dealt with the outcome of a dislodged foley.

Nah, I don't really think it's my score. I mean, I got a lower-mediocre score without studying, so I would think that if I would buckle down and try again, I'd be able to do better. I have a hard enough time dealing with the pressure associated with following physicians' orders (I'm a nurse). I am about 99% certain I would collapse into a singularity if I had to actually write the orders myself.

I only got a 28 because I got a verbal 12. I would've had to take it again to have a chance, really, and I figured that if I couldn't make up my mind about being a doctor then, a million years of medical school wasn't going to make me more sure.

I completely wasted my time by taking it, really. I consider it 6 hours of my life I can't ever get back. I pulled a 28 out in the end, but before taking it, I'd already decided against med school, so I ended up not studying for it, really. The essay part was brutal.

I don't know how great of a career it is, FWIW. You really have to love it, or it is so much hell.

Assuming you can forget the actors from the movie what do you imagine the characters to look like? by JustinJsenin harrypotter

[–]sorryaboutthatbro 1 point2 points ago

Whatever I pictured her as, it wasn't the lady in the movie. I honestly think the casting job was good; she was more intimidating because she was well-put-together. However, they said about eight times in the book that she looked like a toad, and that's precisely how I pictured her.

The day I realized that I referred to my fiance and myself as "Mommy and Daddy" when I talked to my cat brought up two disturbing thoughts. 1. I call myself Mommy when referring to an animal that licks her own anus, and 2. I freely converse with said animal in the first place.

For my own non-feral, (as far as I know) born-in-captivity cat, all of these things are legit methods for getting her to come to me. Her particular favorite call is a combo of "pspspspspspsps" and rubbing my fingers together to make a mild friction sound. However, I am completely aware that I look like an idiot while doing these things.

Should I tell my parents about my blood test? by ABThrowawayOin AskReddit

[–]sorryaboutthatbro 1 point2 points ago

I know my parents blood types. I was a curious kid, so I asked. It's pretty easy for me to remember, though, because we are all the same.

I even worked in a hospital where the id tag and infant security system was attached to the cord clamp, as in when I clamped the cord (immediately following birth, like...the first thing), that infant was tagged and secure. If that system were to fail, it would be insanely rare/ridiculously full of medical errors.

What are some small details in the movies that really bothers you? I'll start. by onasri15in harrypotter

The eyes thing bothered me, too. I mean, they say that the intention was to make him wear contacts, but he couldn't. Still, post production would've taken care of that. If that was too much work, they could've at least played up how his eyes were the same shade of blue as his mother's, if not green.

Drove to a middle-of-nowhere Walmart at least an hour from home, necessitating an overnight stay with a friend's grandmother I'd only met once, so that I wouldn't risk getting the end of book 6 ruined for me at a launch party.

Well, a Texas catheter is a urinary collection device. Most catheters that you use are either straight catheters or foley catheters. Straight caths are used intermittently for someone who can't empty their bladder. Foley caths are indwelling, meaning you place them, inflate a small balloon in the bladder, and leave them in. A Texas catheter is an external catheter. Also known as a condom catheter. You basically put it on exactly like a condom. No matter how professional you are, this is always going to be awkward for EVERYONE.

I don't really know. Generally speaking, I feel like the more a person SHOULD be embarrassed, the less they are. The most embarrassed I've ever been as a nurse was putting a Texas cath on a patient who was my age.

I'm a psychiatric nurse. I would be at too great a risk of violating HIPAA if I did an AMA, but suffice it to say that my experiences would be very different.

I am so AMA hijacking, but pay, in my region (I've worked in both northern WV and southwest PA), tends to be in the 20 bucks an hour range for new grads with no experience. Also, being a male nurse is definitely cool. As a female, I love having male nurses around for a lot of reasons. I think they used to be teased a lot back in the day, but they are definitely invaluable. Both preceptors I've had as a nurse were men, and they were both amazeballs.

Also a nurse. The best thing I did to pass NCLEX was taking a shitton of practice questions. I took two review courses through school (one of which had a pass guarantee, so if I failed, they would've paid for my retest). The reviews were helpful, but doing the practice questions was more so, for me at least. You get the style ingrained in you, and you learn to pick out what is important, what is not important, and what is somewhere in the middle.

Also, while testing, try not to think about the level of difficulty of the questions. A lot of people I know got nervous if they suddenly got an easy question, thinking that definitely meant that they got the last one wrong. Try not to freak out about the question number, either. I know everyone thinks they cannot take more than 75 questions or they will die, but one of my friends actually passed after taking all 265.

This is one of those things nurses fight about doing. When I worked med/surg, we would take turns doing enemas/suppositories.

Well, only fraternal twins run in families. A propensity for an ovary to release multiple eggs is heritable. Identical multiples occur from a random division of already fertilized eggs.
