TROPHY CASE

Best argument I've ever seen for the Oxford Comma by paxanimusin writing

[–]snookums 0 points1 point ago

It's always necessary, because it leaves no room for ambiguity, and there's no situation where additional ambiguity is beneficial to the reader. It's lazy to leave it out for some vague sense of freedom or efficiency. If the writer feels limited by unambiguous clarity, they're probably not that good of a writer.

Mmm. Your example is contrived. I would never take that meaning. Using the oxford comma consistently for seriation makes it clear in every situation.

They would do it in the middle of a sentence.

It took me quite a while to figure out Asus' scheme, but they are trying to be consistent now. From this point on, I believe all the new tablets are going to be called Transformer Pads. This is basically the update for the old TF101, and the upcoming Transformer Pad Infinity will be an update for the Prime, aka TF201.

Honestly, I'm just going to ignore that.

Okay. I can accept that perspective. You have a right to protect your prerogatives from outsiders.

I could imagine there might be few situations. I'm not advocating an death sentence for anyone who skips a comma. All I'm saying is that it should be the default.

Name a few common situations where it introduces confusion.

edit: I'm not trying to be shitty. If someone can give me an example or two, I'll walk away with a different perspective.

I don't think anyone has actually pointed that out. Some have suggested that it should only be used situationally, but their reasoning is sparse.

There's just no good reason to avoid using it, and there's a few good reasons to add it at some times. In the balance, there's simply no good reason to not adopt it in all situations.

I'm not an editor, but I can think of no real rational reason to not use the comma in every list, and I can think of several situations where its absence hurts. I would not be offended to be called dogmatic about it.

I'm not usually a grammar nazi, but I just can't fathom why people can't make the minuscule effort required to be consistent.

I'm pretty much set on my build, but out of curiosity, is there any motherboard that supports sata 3 with minimal work? by snookumsin hackintosh

Thanks for the help. I'll remember to avoid the 10.7.4 update.

This is the exact board I'm planning on getting, so I'm glad to hear that. Are you using the SATA 3 port for the boot drive. I'm getting a SATA 3 SSD and want to use it as my boot drive. All the forums had me believing it was almost impossible to get SATA 3 working without a card. Did you use Kakewalk or Unibeast. I'm planning on using Kakewalk, since all of my parts are compatible. I can't think of any compelling reason to go the other route. I'm wanting to build a very stable system.

edit: You said the intel port. I thought both SATA 3 ports on this one were Marvell.

Yep, and that would be plot relevant, as they made a big stink about it at his funeral. Pun intended.

Have you actually bench marked? I understand some work, but won't actually run at sata 3 speed.

Which z68? It was my understanding that most used the marvell chipset, which doesn't work right.

Thank you. I love how people are trying to make it sound like those who have a problem with cheap, ridiculous writing aimed at 15 year old boys are immature. The Littlefinger sexposition scene was juvenile. It was an immature attempt to grab audience attention over a plot dump. The Margaery sex scene was incredibly relevant, along with the sex scenes in the first episode of the series.

See my comment elsewhere about the Theon sex scene on the ship and the Littlefinger sexposition scene.

Before I address your question, I need to rephrase it, because I think it is biased. I refuse to qualify that any scene "added absolutely nothing to the show." That's a pretty fucking low bar, and you know it. Sure, you could point at the sexposition scenes and say that we learned something during them, but there's a whole variety of shitty scenes that we could also shoehorn into the show that could limbo under that pathetic pole.

The issue is the quality of the scene in relation to the amount of screen time it takes up. The show writers have left out many scenes from the books that would have better established events and characters, but they'll waste 4-5 minutes on a sex scene that could have been established in 20 seconds with a cut away, solely justified by the fact that someone is plot dumping in the background.

Your comment was uninformed and a condescending and tired cliche about americans. I don't really owe you anything.
