This might get some hate, but I took it on it's first ride today and I was smiling the whole time. by auraslipin bicycling

[–]smckenzie23 4 points5 points ago

How far can this go? How heavy? Can you get around OK if you run out of juice?

When I am riding I always fantasize about building an electric bike. Then I think "what the fuck for? I can go anywhere I need to on my bike pretty quick and burn calories."

But damn it would be fun. That thing looks amazing.

Considering vintage Series II Bose 901s. What do you think? by smckenzie23in audiophile

Just picked up a pair of vintage Series II. I really like the sound, but without the EQ they sound just horrible.

Thanks for the feedback. The Magnepan seem interesting, but that directionality is the opposite of what I'm looking for. I like the idea of room filling sound everywhere (for a bigish living room and parties, etc.).

Anyhow, just scored a great deal on some Bose Series II off craigslist. They were $75. They need a little cleanup in terms of aesthetics, and I need to solder the wire to one of the speaker wire contacts (works but is loose and gets static when it moves). But the drivers are flawless.

Was such a stroke of luck. When I got to the place the guy had other equipment he wanted to get rid of that was not listed in the post. I picked up the speakers, a Yamaha CR-1020 and a Dual 1242 turntable: all for $150.

I have to say... after fiddling with the EQ and Receiver settings a bit, I really like the sound. Haven't had the chance to stretch them out and listen at volume yet, but I like what I hear so far.

Now I need to refurb the cabinets and try to find some of the tulip speaker stands somewhere.

Hey, check out myfitnesspal.com (phone apps as well). This is the easiest and most addictive way I've found to monitor intake and log your calories. I keeps you from binging on the wrong foods, as you don't want to run out of calories for the day, and it makes you want to go burn some.

Seems you can get all the parts to rebuild them. They would match the style of the room. Only for music. I like the idea of them reflecting off the walls.

$500 for a 73 Waffle in the box? I'm guessing that would be a steal.

Need suggestions: gift for my wife training for a 1/2 marathon. by Binky216in running

[–]smckenzie23 0 points1 point ago

If I never ran on a treadmill, I might not care. But it is helpful to see your cadence, and to work on keeping that around 90. If I'm just doing a relaxed run I sit around 83spm. But the most efficient way to run is up around 90spm, and it is nice to be able to glance at your watch and know where you are. It is also helpful if you compare runs: pretty easy to see that holding a faster pace requires a faster foot turnover.

Not totally necessary, but it is worth thinking about for a future upgrade. You can pick them up of ebay for < $50 and the battery is replaceable. Make sure you get the new style smaller one if you do.

+1 for the 210. I have the 405. While I love it, I really wish I had the 210. I liked the HRM for awhile, but never use it anymore. What I do find awesome (which she can add later) is the Garmin foot pod. This gives you cadence information, which is really useful. Also, it enables you to use the watch indoors on a treadmill, with high accuracy. I find that keeps me motivated through the winter months, and allows me to track the runs I do in a gym before I lift weights.

Very handy. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/175990133

None of the apartments I saw had window screens. Where the hell does one buy window screens?! by Ckooin vancouver

[–]smckenzie23 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, the gnats get in your face when you are walking or running. But they don't really come in your house. Fruit flies get in your house (especially of you compost, or forget a glass of wine out). But, screens don't help with those for some reason.

Biking from Canada to Mexico with a couple of guys from England by kcamrkcanin bicycletouring

Nice. Love the pic of the 4 or you. Wish there were some better pics of the bikes. Canada to Mexico, and not one of you is running front panniers?

Deetjens does a fantastic family-style breakfast. Worth stopping if you can time it right, even if you don't stay there.

Americans living in Vancouver, what did you wish you knew before you got there? by kleer001in vancouver

[–]smckenzie23 1 point2 points ago

I guess if you have a full set-up that is true. Used to do it years ago, with mixed results. I was talking about the u-brew crap I've tried that ended up being almost as expensive as the liquor store.

That said, I'm a wine person. I've never had home-made wine that was any good.

[–]smckenzie23 3 points4 points ago

Again no and no. You can buy good beer in the States cheaper than you can make crappy beer here. Goes the same for all Booze. California wine is the worst. Way more than twice as much, and not nearly as good of choices. I can usually find Patron tequila for $35 at BevMo in LA or Las Vegas. It is $99 here.

Booze will cost you more than twice as much. No way around it.

PNE Forum bans electronic music concerts after noise complaints | Vancouver, Canada | Straight.com by EpicChefin vancouver

Thing is, I live where I should be complaining. It just isn't that loud. It doesn't go that late. I don't get it.

Man, I live right by the Forum and I think this is silly. Even something booming like Bassnectar was way quieter than the outdoor concerts at the fair (which are also fine). Sometimes I hate complainers.

Vancouverite parents- How much do you pay your babysitters? by MyLifeIsSamin vancouver

[–]smckenzie23 1 point2 points ago

Hey, I see many or you responding that you babysit. Anyone on the East Side? We sometimes need babysitting on the 2700 block of Eton (between Slocan and Kaslo). I hate to see someone having to do transit, and don't want to drive someone if I've had a couple drinks. Would love to find someone near there that can do random evenings.

The aftermath of my friend's bike and the car that hit him. by impulsinatorin bicycling

[–]smckenzie23 0 points1 point ago

it would surprise you the similarities

Yep. Mostly that you are on the losing side of physics. The reason I bought a motorcycle in the first place is that I had spent two years with only a bike (in a not very bike friendly town). At some point I realized a motorcycle would be at least as safe as the bicycle and still have much lower operating costs than a car.
