TIL that 40% of college students will be considered alcoholics by the medical community next year. by iam4realin todayilearned

[–]skillscanada 0 points1 point ago

Most doctors are currently doing it wrong.

It's the label that carries the weight of scrutiny, that's why it's better to avoid labeling people unless they want to label themselves. And when people are seeking a label themselves, it could be for a variety of reasons but some would argue that it's to externalize their problem behaviors from their view of themselves/identity.

"I did it because I am a drunk" stresses the individual conscious choice whereas "I cannot control my alcoholism" gives power to "the problem" and lets the individual feel that it's okay because they can't control their alcoholism, which is false.

PLEASE READ THIS - FORMER UNB STUDENT

I hear what you're saying and I know you feel helpless but there is something you can do about it. I am from Fredericton, NB and graduated from UNB a couple years ago in Counselling. While I was in the program one of my best friends who had a disability (Adult ADHD) was having a lot of problems getting the equipment and resources he needed from the student accessibility centre. He had such a hard time and even had to prove he had ADHD and pay for a psychoeducational assessment from a Psychologist. There were many other unnecessary hurdles (similar to what you've been mentioning regarding the 12 month period) that he also had to get through before receiving what he deserved.

He is now an advocate for people with disabilities, knows the law inside out and if you are interested I can get you his name and contact number as he is a big advocate for social injustice and would know the right channels to get your problem-solved.

if drinking affects your life negatively, you have a problem, period

If someone goes all week without drinking they wouldn't be classified as a functional alcoholic. Odds are they aren't an alcoholic at all, odds are it's your view of what an alcoholic is that's distorted.

That certainly helps in understanding the call down with 66 but I would be worrying about him having a facecard or a PP higher than 66 in this spot, I understand your logic but if you put 66 vs a random 4 cards in this spot than 80% of the time you will lose to randomness. He had some great blockers though

TIL that there is a second 'brain' in your gut which controls your mood and most inner functions by londonfoxin todayilearned

[–]skillscanada 1 point2 points ago

My theory on it is that this part of the system, the ganglia in the gut, could have been an adaptation of a symbiotic relationship early on in evolution. Much like the mitochondria living within the cell structure. Mutual benefits yet independent structures.

Nice, I can see that being a definite possibility. I am sure you're already aware that we have lots of structures (especially in the brain) that we have in a sense, evolved away from. I don't necessarily believe that we no longer require whatever function said structures were believed to control (or that the function hasn’t moved to another area of the brain) but it's more likely that we are focusing on new frontiers, things that matter more in today’s world than in the past when surviving and not getting mauled by wild cats was a real concern. I know that’s an extreme and maybe not the clearest example, but I strongly agree with your statement about a symbiotic relationship. Relationships like these can still be seen today in the “heart and mind” which happens when people are not being congruent with their thoughts and feelings which results in tension or stress (stomach is in knots) in some people.

Electronic poker tables - Any advice? by skillscanadain poker

[–]skillscanada[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, glad you had a winning cruise, it's always nice to pay for the trip with winnings and have some left over afterwards. The only thing I didn't understand was your tip about using the edge of a card or fingernail to read the hole cards.. Is it not on an electronic screen or is there something that covers it most of the time and you can peak back intermittently to "remember" what you had.

That's fair to assume but you got the gist of my argument. The blogger is likely inputting some of his own beliefs, not being objective, which is why journalism exists and libel is a crime.

Thank you, I try to be. A firewall is to separate a secure area from a less secure area and to control communications between the two. This is not EXACTLY what the corpus callosum does and doesn't translate perfectly to everyone.. So in that case instead of internalizing what you've heard or read as fact (regarding the firewall), understand that not everyone will agree with you and therefore call the structure what it is when trying to persuade others that you have a brain in your stomach, spine, or any other part of the CNS where there is a cluster of neurons.

[–]skillscanada 0 points1 point ago

You don't need it to be "worthy" at all. It's just an evolutionary process where fewer people had post-secondary education in the past and today employers have a larger pool of candidates to choose from. Education inflation has always occurred, in the past generation it was always high school diplomas that were considered the bare minimum but it doesn't mean you NEED more degrees today, you just have to sell yourself to employers as an individual better and be accepting of your situation until sufficient experience has been gained.
