Run your root filesystem off a USB stick

I got a very fast SD card that will read and write consistently at 20MB a second, but on the RPi it might do 1MB a second. Maybe.

The SD card driver/bus interface is rather unoptimised I suspect. Great for booting. Not so great for IO. I used a USB key as a root filesystem, and now the performance of the whole system is through the roof! (well compared to what it was) No longer is everything blocking on IO! Or at least not as much :)

5 degausses later in the original position and I started to panic After about 15 it came good

This was right when the US were ignoring the UN and taking unilateral action in invading Iraq. The differences were huge, even for ones with little opinion content (how much of which not-in-dispute facts that were reported for example).

You can still see the same thing. OWS was a good example: AJE was running a huge live feature, yet finding it on CNN was a matter of using a search engine

At uni, this was shown as an add-on to a first year pol-sci class. Attendance wasn't compulsory at all.

What was compulsory was reading (at least) CNN US, CNN International, aljazeera and BBC news sites every day and comparing the presentation of the same stories.

Where are developers getting their technical Elonics and RTL2832U information from? by roger_in RTLSDR

[–]shigawire 2 points3 points ago

The Linux DVB for the RTL8132 driver has sample code put in there I can only guess by RealTek when they were putting it together. Especially the tuner drivers are littered with it, even large chunks of pseudocode commented out. Many of the tuner drivers are based from that codebase, or other open source DVB drivers one way or another.

This isn't to say that people don't have access to the information under NDA. You can at the very least ask RealTek nicely for more information on the RTL2832U under NDA (I haven't). I have no idea of Elonics are as forthcoming.

Quality comparisons - Can anyone help us build a test script? by osirisx11in RTLSDR

[–]shigawire 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Thanks for posting this. FWIW, I'm not a librtlsdr maintainer (although I have hacked on the code some), nor do I have access to the datasheets for the rtl2832u or the e4000.

That aside, if you call rtlsdr_set_sample_rate, and that rate can't be represented by the decimation factor set (i.e. (((crystal_freq * 2**22) / decimation) >> 16) & 0xffff), then it will print to stderr what the actual rate set is. You should pretty much always call rtlsdr_get_sample_rate after a call to rtlsdr_set_sample_rate to see what the actual sample rate being used is.

Good luck with changing the crystals. Keep in mind that the tuner is likely clocked from the same crystal, and it may get upset if it doesn't know what it's being clocked it. Some of the tuners allow you to pick between a few crystal frequencies (I'm going to guess given the design there aren't exactly many tuned circuits outside of the tuner); I have no idea about the rtl2832u.

Okay, so you have a whole lot of those little tiny antennas now.

If you could post a photo of a couple of you doing a ninja battle with them in the FSF, that would totally make my day (and be totally awesome).

(I'm going to guess you'll politely file this in the dustbin of crazy requests, but regardless, thanks for working for the FSF :) )

[–]shigawire 2 points3 points ago

I once bounced a data packet[0] off the international space station, across to a different satellite that happened to be in low earth orbit, off a THIRD that was coincidentally nearby, and then was received automatically back on earth about 4000km away, and posted to the internet.

This was with a third-hand radio that had been originally in a country fire brigade truck somewhere for 20 years that I'd picked up for $20, an old PC with a soundcard, and about 50 cents worth of things to hook the two together, plus an antenna set up on top of the bike shed just out the window.

For me, this is mind bogglingly awesome. Did you know there was a BBS on the international space station? I managed to log into it while it was passing overhead once (it's only visible for a few minutes) using the same setup.

It's probably irrelevant that it turns out girls think this is hot. If you don't think it's awesome for it's own sake, you're probably not into those sorts of girls.

This was the eBay item: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370513913203

It's an RTL2832U/E4000 with USB VID/PID 0bda:2832.

As someone with the same USB ID mentioned, it's flaky trying to enumerate over the USB :-/ I did manage to get a datastream out of it at least though. (Edit: Can quite clearly see APRS on 145.175 MHz so seems to be working )
