Fuck this depression by MrCatMustachein GetMotivated

Onward! TO GLORY!

I'm graduating college with an unrelated major and I don't have previous experience. I want to take this summer to get certs and familiarize myself with being a sysadmin. Can you suggest to me a rough 5 month training program to get a job as a Jr. Sysadmin? by summersysadminin sysadmin

[–]seyfarth 2 points3 points ago

He's not wrong. Without any experience with IT of any sort, no one will hire you to run the show.

Get your A+, get a job in helpdesk, and work your way up.

Years and years of your parents telling you how great you are with computers is skewing your perspective.

What foxlisk said. Just pick a tool and use it to build something awesome. Stick with it through the end.

I'm the one guy who actually paid for WinRAR (and mIRC) ...AMA? by seyfarthin pics

Hah long time. I'd been using them both since middle school (2000-ish), bought them in 2009/10

Do you have a compelling explanation to make me think this isn't just your homework?

Or $50 US and a paypal account?

MS-Access SQL : multiple where statements by KingZingin SQL

[–]seyfarth 3 points4 points ago

Access's SQL is... "special," to say the least. There is no case statement - you use if functions compounded together to create the same effect.

Anyhow, OP, stop using Design view. Time to learn :)

You're looking for something along these lines I think: SELECT fieldsWeCareAbout FROM table WHERE ( field1 = 1000 AND field 3 <> 302000123 ) OR ( field1 = 2000 AND field 3 <> 230300030 ) OR ( field1 = 2500 AND field 3 <> 002390400 )

You like to make games. Why don't you make a game? Tic tac toe, checkers, blackjack, poker, pong, frogger... There are so many possibilities!

Depends: how much do you like backup tapes?

I've noticed some strange quirks with this thing. E.g. how it counts how many lines to perform an operation to.

I'm joining you guys in March; what should I expect? by ShasOFishin MSOE

[–]seyfarth 6 points7 points ago

(whoa. in writing this it kind of turned into a coffee-induced rant.)

I'm a fifth year senior, been here the entire time, and in answer to your question, it's entirely up to you. Stuff is always happening, most of it random.

A lot of people just surf the web and play games, and you can feel like that's all anyone does sometimes, but it's not true at all.

Watch your email. Stuff is constantly happening - pay special attention to anything from Rick Gagliano, and go out of your way to introduce yourself to him and the people around him. There's a theater troupe here, music, at least a dozen active student orgs. Join something, talk to everyone in it. There's stuff to do, always, even if it's not organized by the school. Going to MSOE taught me you have to put forth effort to have fun.

And do things outside of school. Go to parties, meet people that go to UW-Milwaukee and MIAD.

Be social. Talk to everyone. Especially at MSOE, people are more the smart, introverted type. It takes a little effort, but it's worth it.
