Take the Ghostbusters tour of NY by lucubratiousin malelifestyle

I think I have another reason to visit NY soon. Might need a few wing-persons...

And ham... which should probably be spam instead.

Wait, corn... on pizza? I can't even clearly remember it on "Mexican Fiesta" pizza served in grade school. That just sounds... ugh. No.

[SV] and a rant about lying scum bags and "sugar free" maltitol by dren-dkin keto

[–]seancarter 1 point2 points ago

My understanding is you're just using it to detect the presence of ketones. It's a positive/negative result. The shade may be affected by saturation levels, amount of water you've consumed, etc. I've tested at different times of the day and usually gotten consistent results. Now I'm at the point where I test once every few days and sometimes go a week or more without checking.

You're right about the burning off glucose with HIIT. There's a great write-up here. Basically you exercise to the point where your body is looking for fuel; but you want it doing that when there's no normal (glucose) fuel... so it shifts to fat storages.

Also, just a quick disclaimer, I'm still learning a lot as I go and realizing more and more that I know less than I thought. Standing precariously on the shoulders of giants... So while I'm seeing certain results, yours may differ. Like I said, I may even be doing it all wrong. That's why it's a lifestyle change and not a diet. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Definitely. The big thing to remember with ketostix, as well as the off-brands, is you're not measuring amounts. You're checking to see whether you are or aren't in ketosis. The shade doesn't matter as much as whether there's color or not. If it registers as negative, don't panic. Check it on two other sticks to be sure. Then, try HIIT (I would do a run/walk mix on ellipticals for 1hr+) on an empty stomach, watch your carbs more closely for a few days, and re-test. For me, that's usually enough.

I got a bit neurotic for a while and would check after every meal. I'd test after drinking lots of water, after drinking lots of diet/zero soda. It helped me understand how my body reacts... but I never really saw anything consistent enough to make true judgements (hence neurotic).

Hmmm. Yeah I can see how this can be confusing. I remember reading somewhere that people on an LCHF diet can consume sugar alcohols differently because the body treats them like straight alcohols. Basically, your body wants it gone and/or it's so high in quick energy/fuel that it burns off right away. However, when you're burning sugar alcohol, you're not burning fat. It doesn't kick you out of ketosis (because it burns off faster)... I'm guessing unless you go overboard. However, I'd now take that explanation with a grain of salt until I get more science.

I know this much, I've been eating this way for about six months and, as far as I can tell, consuming sugar alcohols hasn't kicked me out of ketosis. It has slowed progress; but that's when I'm eating CarbSmart ice-cream, not protein bars before/after a run.

I don't religiously check with ketostix anymore; but I do it enough to not see any adverse effects. However, I remember Steve Gibson talking about ketostix not changing colors after you've been in ketosis for a while... I haven't seen that happen consistently enough in my own checks to agree with that statement. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. That's why I'm working on learning more about the science of it all.

Wow thanks for posting this. I definitely need to learn more about sugar alcohols. I occasionally eat Detour "Lower Sugar" protein bars. They're loaded with maltitol! I knew they had sugar alcohols; but I thought it wasn't as big a concern since I'm usually heading to, or coming from, the gym. I stay in ketosis, as far as I can tell; but I've never tracked my blood sugar and how it affects me.

The miraculous anti-farting properties of Ketosis by slim_penguinin keto

[–]seancarter 1 point2 points ago

Wait, less farting? I'm still farting all the time... they just don't smell like anything. Noisy couch-shaking farts. I've even scared the dog a few times when ripping just after waking up in the morning.

And this whole "barely take any dump(s)" thing... I'm still at like ~2/day (+/- 1). They're just generally easier.

Maybe I'm consuming too much fiber.

Keto alcoholics - who here CAN drink well in ketosis? by ashsimmondsin keto

[–]seancarter 0 points1 point ago

My tolerance might be lower. It's difficult to tell since I've shifted from higher gravity beers (8%-18%) to spirits. One thing I've definitely noticed is that I drink slower. I'm not the biggest fan of neat drinks, so that's also a factor. Ultimately, I like to think I have a high tolerance... but I also like to think I'm well endowed. I'm probably wrong.

Also, "dreaded low tolerance," I don't think that means what you think it means. In theory, it costs/takes less to get more drunk. That's awesome! It means you're saving money, you're forced to be more aware of what you drink and how fast you drink it (read: appreciate it more), AND... it means you're imbibing less which means your body has less to deal with before getting back on the keto-train. tl;dr - being a cheap date is awesome!

Sorry, don't know if you're doing it right. imgur is selectively over capacity. I'll assume it all worked out better than expected.

MD Court of Appeals issued this opinion stating pits/pit-mixes are inherently dangerous [pdf] by seancarterin pitbulls

[–]seancarter[S] -1 points0 points ago

I've reached out to my governor's office and am trying to contact my local state reps. If you live in MD, I would ask that you do the same.

I'm looking into what goes into organized protest (either at the state building or court of appeals). Would anyone be interested in this?

Ah. Thanks. That's definitely a good point. Right now I'm just voicing my opposition and asking others to do the same if they agree. I wonder if the location will make it less likely to have permits approved.

I'm no lawyer. Can anyone help me better understand this MD Court of Appeals Opinion saying pit-bulls/mixes are all dangerous? by seancarterin AskReddit

[–]seancarter[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's what I thought. I get the bit about jaw strength; but that doesn't dictate aggression. My issue is it singles out the breed/mix. It should apply to all breeds/mixes or none.

For example, I conceed my dog could do more damage than my sister's shih tzu. However, her dog is openly aggressive to other dogs and people (I blame a lack of socialization). Yes, my dog can do more damage; but her dog is more likely to bite. My 12-guage can also do more damage than my friend's glock 9mm; but that doesn't mean I should be held more accountable when something goes wrong just because it's capable of inflicting more harm.

Also, thanks. I agree about respecting the breed. I was wary at first; but as I learned more about them, I changed my opinion.

[–]seancarter[S] 1 point2 points ago

My understanding of the issue is it affects all owners of pitbulls and pit-mixes. It immediately makes the owner liable just because of the breed. This makes defense much more challenging. Furthermore, if there is a landlord involved, he/she is also potential liable. This could affect the ability to rent. Beyond that, it could mean people with these dogs aren't allowed into public parks and/or dog parks.

I rescued my pit/lab from a shelter last year. He was dumped at a shelter as a puppy because his front paws were deformed. The only time he has lashed out at anyone is when the vet tech was dealing with a cracked/exposed dewclaw. I'm sure any dog would do that out of defense if they weren't sedated. He is not aggressive. If anything, when it comes to people, he is a total coward until he becomes familiar.

I've already called the governor's office and voiced my objection. Local representatives were out of the office. I'll call them tomorrow. Maybe I'm still somewhat an idealist; but at least symbolism is something. It may not help reverse anything; but complaining and doing nothing will definitely not help reverse it.

Something else I don't understand, it appears this opinion was issued by a former judge. He retired in 2004.
