TROPHY CASE

It takes the average U.S. worker nearly a month to make what the average CEO earns in an hour by twolf1in news

Couldn't agree more, but that's up to each business owner(s) to decide, right?

Who gave workers the weekend? There's no mandate that says employees can't work on the weekend.

Everyone seems to agree that encouraging entrepreneurship is good and beneficial, but nobody (in this thread) seems to understand that setting compensation rules such as mandated paid vacations and limits to CEO compensation actually, really, truly does inhibit entrepreneurship.

Rather than insult me, how about you actually contribute to the conversation and point out how my alleged oversimplifcation matters?

I would argue that the best type of Capitalism is one that encourages entrepreneurship. The more entrepreneurship, the more competitive the labor market will be and the more efficiently priced goods and services will be.

Oh, I'll definitely agree that the shitty cars thing is the major cause, but without the unions, they would have been free to scale down their workforce to compensate rather than go bankrupt. I don't watch Fox, that's just for people who don't want to think.

I don't understand. How about machine shops?

I'm not trying to be antagonistic. Just trying to have a good conversation.

They not supposed to discriminate based on gender, but they do.

I see the exact opposite happening in the world over the last 100 years. Pretty much every communist/socialist country (except China) has either collapsed or fallen into poverty, while the capitalistic countries have basically conquered the world.

I think there's a few high profile companies that hang off the government, but for the most part businesses are completely free to do as they wish. I do business daily with 100-200 other companies, and none of them have any government assistance or bureaucracy.

I never said it was ethical, just that it happens. I also still don't see the misleading statement I made. Would you be so kind as to point it out for me, without being condescending (which means intentionally talking down to someone).

What makes you think we don't have a market system? I don't understand. Certainly not a perfectly free market, but over time things do tend to resemble a free market.

Define worth. If by worth you mean intrinsic value, then no I would say that every human is worth equal. If by worth you mean the income they bring to a company, then absolutely there are people who are worth 400x more than others.

Okay, if we're using your analogy, then why should we mandate that all tools have to be a stainless steel screwdriver when sometimes a rusty razor blade will work?

Did you follow that? I'm not sure I made sense.

I would argue that the companies headed by idiots are at a competitive disadvantage to those headed by very smart people.

I was using zero vacation time as an extreme example; very few companies offer no vacation time, but the argument is the same. I would argue that there is no difference in an employee's productivity the rest of the year if they get two weeks vacation time versus four weeks vacation time. In fact, as an employer I get employees coming to me all the time asking if they can sell back some of their paid vacation time to me because they want the extra money. These are typically some of my most productive employees.

As another extreme argument to your plan, let's pretend the government now steps in and mandates that you have to give 40 weeks of paid vacation time. As a business owner, how do you feel about that? You have to have employees, right? Are you still willing to pay your employee 52k and give them the 40 weeks paid vacation time?

If you think that's what a CEO does, then you are way off the mark. It's like saying that all Peyton Manning does is throw the ball to his receivers.

I just realized you didn't read anything I said.

It's not perfect, but I think it addresses a similar issue.

One of the reasons women make less than men is due to pregnancy and child rearing. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1983185,00.html

It seems that you're assuming that companies exist for the welfare of all employees, but that's just not the case. Companies exist for the welfare of the shareholders. Under your plan, every company in the country would be understaffed.

Unethical how? Isn't it unethical to force someone to give someone else money without a fair good or service to exchange?

What's the fallacy? I don't see one.

Is $8.6 million somehow not enough money?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's not up to you or me to determine what someone else's salary should be. It's based upon a mutual agreement between an employer and employee. If a CEO (who is typically an employee in a public company) wants to work at company A who offered him $9.6 million over company B who offered him $8.6 million, then can you blame him?

If the board of directors determined that a CEO is worth $9.6 million per year, then who are you to say they are wrong?

The law saws it is illegal to discriminate on a gender basis, but that law is incredibly difficult to enforce.
