Colonial soldiers fighting in their possessor state's wars by anonymousssssin AskHistorians

The French used North African troops in WW2 when liberating Italy. There is a movie starring Sophia Loren about the problems with discipline the French had with these divisions.(rape)

Napoleon had Polish divisions that fought for him in Haiti and to help put down rebellion in Spain. I'm not sure if Poland was exactly a colony of France though, maybe a client/puppet state. I think the Poles thought by fighting for France in its imperial wars Napoleon would protect Poland from Prussia/Russia/Austria.

They had serfdom until Napoleon outlawed it. It wasn't all candy and rainbows. Western Europe got rid of serfdom much earlier (15th century).

Controversy around new book by Orlando Figes on Stalin's Russia by musschrottin history

A lot of it never gets into the mainstream papers, just in academic journals but I find it helpful when looking into reading a history book to check out what other historians are saying, as opposed to journalists/politicians/joe random.

Mao: The Unknown Story, for example has been critized for a lack of citations and unobjective writing.

In 2009, Gregor Benton and Lin Chun edited Was Mao Really a Monster: The Academic Response to Chang and Halliday’s "Mao: The Unknown Story", which compiles fourteen previously-published academic responses, most of which are highly critical. Benton and Lin wrote that "unlike the worldwide commercial media... most professional commentary has been disapproving." [28] Mobo Gao, Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Adelaide, wrote that The Unknown Story was "intellectually scandalous", and characterised it by saying that it "it misinterprets evidence, ignores the existing literature, and makes sensationalist claims without proper evidence."

Is Malaysia East Asian or Southeast Asian? Is there a list of what country is what? I feel stupid I've never heard of this division before.

Why is the Philippines so poor? by schueajin AskHistorians

The US killed some 1-2 million of them

I think 2 million is on the high end for the Philippine-American War if that is what you are talking about.

From the declaration of martial law in 1972, until 1983, the U.S. government provided $2.5 billion in bilateral military and economic aid to the Marcos regime, and about $5.5 billion through multilateral institutions such as the World Bank.

How absolute was the Philippines independence though? Did the people really want the US there or was it American money buying Philippines' leaders consent? I thought the US had a base in the Philippines during the Vietnam War, 10,000 Filipinos fought in the Vietnam war, the US was/is the largest investor in the Philippines, the Philippines was part of SEATO masterminded by US Secretary of State Dulles

Edward Lansdale and the CIA were involved in the Philippines in the 1950s putting down a rebellion.

When during the Cold War did the Philippines go against American interests?

EDIT: I just looked this stuff up on Wikipedia so it may be wrong.

South Vietnam's President Ngo Dinh Diem on the cover of Time magazine. 1955. [400x527] by schueajin PropagandaPosters

[–]schueaj[S] 3 points4 points ago

I thought this might be considered propaganda, considering Henry Luce's (the founder of Time) political activism, support of Chiang Kai Chek, etc.

Here's an excerpt from an interesting book on Luce's support of Diem and American involvement in Vietnam using Time and Life magazines as boosters: http://books.google.com/books?id=fb30H5d_jZkC&pg=PA194&lpg=PA194&dq=Henry+Luce+diem&source=bl&ots=AYaVt9WUkt&sig=iyPkNWnB8otmW3vV6Djfcdakijc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xt-9T4P8JYrt6gHG1IRJ&ved=0CE4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Henry%20Luce%20diem&f=false

What was the Soveit belief for the cause of the Cold War? by thesmallvilleheroin AskHistorians

[–]schueaj 0 points1 point ago

The US invaded the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, etc. to put down rebellions in sovereign countries just like the USSR did. Not to mention Chile, Iran, and Guatemala. Anybody trying to end American hegemony got a lesson in how much the Americans value the independence of their client states.
