Today my girlfriend told me that she would never have kids with a guy with tattoos because she doesn't want her kids born with the tattoos of the father, as if they were passed genetically. My friend's girlfriend, who lives in the city of Fremont, saw a custom license plate that said "Fremont" to which she said "Oh look! That must me the mayors car!"

As if every mayor of every city had a custom license plate with their city's name on it.

What's the most degrading thing you've done for money? by theknightwhosays_neein AskReddit

[–]sargentpilcher 3 points4 points ago

God, I did this every day for at least 1/4 of my shift. Sometimes more if I thought I could get away with it. Pretending like I was looking for something got me out of so much shit.

We had a big back wharehouse though, and during my last year, they installed motion activated lights that would go off after a certain amount of time. So if you were back there for 5 minutes, the lights would then go out, which sucked because if anybody went back there while the lights were out, they would know you had been back there for more than 5 minutes. It sucked working there after that.

As a former retail manager/monkey of 6 years, this is entirely accurate.

Thank you for the advice. If it will help, then I guess I'll just have to live with it.

This question is off topic, but if you know about neti pots, I would like to ask. I have really bad allergies, especially around this time of year. I take Claratin, mucinex, and sudafed everyday for them to help me clear out my mucus.

Would it help my singing if I used the neti pot too? I have one, but I rarely use it because if I use the saline solution, it tastes disgusting, and if I don't, it hurts pretty bad. But I would be more likely to use it everyday if I thought it would help in that area.

When I first decided I wanted to jog, I did it around a local lake. I told myself I would do it everyday, but often times I would wake up, go outside, and it would be FREEZING cold.

So I joined a gym to eliminate that excuse. Now I go everyday, and I'm a treadmill junkie, but I don't find it boring.

To all beginners, regarding piano exercises by indeedwatsonin piano

I'm not saying I disagree with you, as you probably know much better than I do. But one of the points you made makes a lot of sense, but I see it a bit differently than you.

You said that Hanon is like the bible organising itself into alphabetical order before reading the actual bible. But that's basically what we do when we are learning to read. We learn all the words first, how they are put together, etc. Then we move onto reading books and sentences, and I think the same can apply to music.

I personally feel that it's good to know scales for those moments when somebody tells you "Hey, this song is in the key of F Major" and you will know exactly how to play anything in F major because you will have practiced scales.

When Is It Too Late To Start In Music? Am I Being Unrealistic? by musicwannain Music

[–]sargentpilcher 0 points1 point ago

It's never too late to start, and over time if you got good enough you may be able to make some money at it.

The bad news is that you've put yourself at a disadvantage by 1) Waiting so long, and 2) being spread so thin. That is, the more time you put into any one thing, the better you will be at it. So, naturally, if your time is split between art, writing, and music, then all 3 will progress much slower (Assuming you still do the other 2 things).

IMO, if you're trying to make a career out of something, it's much better to pick one thing you love, and do it with all your energy. But it's never too late, although it will be a few years before you really start getting a good grasp on how things work.

This is why I liked the movie, and why it's better than most movies. And I completely realize a lot of the movie was super cheesy, retarted flying worms, and god's, and aliens all fighting, is a pretty bad recipe IMO. However, the writing, was outstanding! Like REALLY good. Think of it this way. Every. Single. Scene. in the movie had purpose. It drove the story forward. Ever single line in the movie, drove the story forward. If it didn't have relevance now, it will in 30 seconds. You never truly realize what's going on. The scene where they introduce black widow where she is being interogated? Genius! From a writing perspective, it was a god damn masterpiece of film making. So many times in my theater when the audience was cheering, and laughing. I rarely see that.

Help with buying an all purpose hi hat? by sargentpilcherin drums

[–]sargentpilcher[S] 0 points1 point ago

I think it depend on the genre. If i want to make a hi hat roll for dubstep, then using an mpc sampled hi hat would be suficient, except for the dynamics. However, for a hip hop hi hat roll, i think since a lot of hip hop drums are sampled funk/soul songs, i feel like a real hi hat would help me get the sound im after. Dynamics wise, and tone wise.

Assisted reading with Shakespeare? by sargentpilcherin writing

[–]sargentpilcher[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, and I see your point, however, they are simply different genre's of writing. For example, take orchestral music, and heavy metal. They have nothing in common, but if you know the underpinnings of the music (music theory), then you will be able to easily apply this same knowledge from heavy metal, to orchestration. Even to country or hip hop.

The difference between poems and songwriting is like this. You are correct in that, I would not be able to write a poem and turn it into a song, however, training my brain to become good at vocabulary, rhyming techniques, clever lines, metaphors, and things of that nature, I would then be able to easily apply the same ideas to songwriting instead.

edit: And I would like to still read shakespeare, for the same reason I would listen to bach, or mozart. They were masters of their craft, and even though what they have written has been played out, there is genius buried within it.
