TROPHY CASE

We all love AskReddit story time, but the threads are always so specific. What's your story that you've always wanted to tell but never found the right thread in which to tell it? by PeacePigin AskReddit

I once was on chat roulette with some friends and we rouletted to two other people, turns out that they lived down the road from us and we met at the local McDonalds

Reddit, what natural events are very common where you live, but exotic elsewhere? by Arachnid92in AskReddit

[–]saralk 3 points4 points ago

Wait, is that not a common thing? I can imagine that it doesn't happen in the tropics, but don't you guys call the season "fall" for a reason?

The Prime Minister properly supporting Britain (and the Chelsea football team) at the G8 summit by Commander_Monkeyin unitedkingdom

[–]saralk 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't matter where the money is coming from, just that it is coming from somewhere.

It's a pretty poor argument to say that it doesn't count because it's coming within the country since most of the money spent in the UK comes from "within the country", ultimately what's more important is that money is moving around, that's really what powers economies.

Sport, especially football seems to have a particular problem with corruption, tax loop holes, tax exemptions and money laundering.

My main point was employment, if you employ people, you have to pay tax, there's no getting around that.

Also, as you're now arguing on the grounds that clubs exploit tax loops hold and illegal activity, you're kind of moved away from your original point, there may be problems with the business of football in general, in the same way that there may be problems with the NHS, but that in itself doesn't mean that it's a bad idea, just that it needs improvement.

Football in the UK brings in billions in revenue, employs thousands of people directly (think beyond the players, each stadium employs loads of people), and probably loads more indirectly in (pubs and media).

If UK football clubs weren't competitive on a global scale, it just wouldn't be as interesting to watch and wouldn't bring in the massive revenue that it does.

The reason why RES can do it, but Reddit can't is because of copyright issues.

The Coca Cola Bag by Kassiu5in videos

[–]saralk 0 points1 point ago

Sooooo let me get this straight. They want it in a bag so they don't have to pay the bottle deposit, yet in this image she is clearly pouring the coke from her bottle into the bag.

In a lot of developing countries, where they commonly sell soft drinks in glass bottles, you pay a deposit fee for the bottle, that you get back when you return the bottle. So if you're on the go and you wont be able to return the bottle, you'd get the coke in a bag so you wont have to pay the deposit fee.

Non-Americans who have visited the US: What surprised you the most about the US, and what surprised you the least? by jumbletonin AskReddit

[–]saralk 117 points118 points ago

Most: The police - maybe it was because I was in NYC at the time, but I remember asking a police officer for directions, the two officers were just standing on a street corner, not doing anything.

They gave me the shortest answer possible, basically just giving me a vague direction to follow, and one of them put his hand on his gun.

I'm not trying to say that all police are pigs or whatever, but it maybe realised that maybe in the US, the police are there for a different reason. They are there specifically to keep the peace, if something goes wrong, they'll step in and sort it out.

In the UK, I feel like the police are a presence on the street that basically exist to help people, within reason, you can ask them for directions, or just chat to them, or ask them for advice on how to deal with something and they will help.

To a Brit, 300 miles is a long distance, to an American, 300 years is a long time

Are the sunglasses that cost more than $50 (or even more than $250) really any better than those that cost $5? Is it all about fashion, or are there some that are extremely well built? by SmellsLikeUpfooin answers

[–]saralk 0 points1 point ago

My dad bought some Ray Bans in 1975 when he first moved to the UK, and he still wears them when driving to this day.

I got a pair of promotional sunglasses for free two weeks ago, and now i use them as Pince-nez's because the arm things broke off.

So I think there is something to this higher price = higher quality

I can't find the video now, but this was featured on a show where they did a followup: apparently someone left his camera there and the police found the camera and found out who everyone was and they all got in trouble.

Neal's Yard, London by tazcelin pics

[–]saralk 0 points1 point ago

It looks cool, but it's actually pretty rubbish, if it's a sunny day then it can be quite nice. But it's right in the heart of the tourist area (Covent Garden is just south of it, and it's round the corner from where Chicago the musical is running) so it's just got a load of overpriced food and some herbal remedy shops.

There is a place on Monmouth Street which Neal's Yard ends up on called Monmouth Coffee which is really tasty. There's also a few vintage stores which have some cool jumpers.

What are the pros in cons about living in Europe? What would be a reason to stay in my own country? by DuzeMcnastyin AskReddit

[–]saralk 1 point2 points ago

Every country has its problems, you just think that America is so horrible because you live there are you see everything. Whereas when you hear about European countries, you probably only really hear about how it's better than the US.

The truth is that all countries have major problems, and the grass is always greener on the other side.

UK man cheats 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' - YouTube by yipskipin videos

[–]saralk 1 point2 points ago

I remember when this all came out, Who Wants to be a Millionaire was MASSIVE in the UK, and this scandal was huge. It dominated the newspapers, all the news channels were talking about it, and when this show aired, I remember sitting with my whole family glued to the screen watching the show.

Also, in the first series of Big Brother, when Nasty Nick cheated on the gameshow by colluding with people to vote tactically, that was front page of the financial times. A fact which now blows my mind.
